is it worth it to be a barista trainer? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GoldennTrash
i already said yes, but they said it would be $50 per person i train and they have to complete the full 2 week training otherwise I don’t get paid for it lol. so was just wondering anyone else’s experience with it?
OMGitsJewelz 196 points 9m ago
Even without the bonus, I think it's worth it. You're already going to be at work; it's nice doing something different for a change! And it's a good skill set to have and looks good on resumes in the future.
GoldennTrash [OP] 38 points 9m ago
yea that’s true. i would like to be compensated though only because i’m going to have to exert a little more energy into coaching someone else and making sure they understand everything properly, but i do like learning myself, so i do hope it’s worth it lol
Cautious-Abrocoma116 3 points 9m ago
You also usually end up with more hours then normal during the weeks you’ll be training so there is more pay from that as well. It’s also the first step towards moving up in the company if that’s something you’re interested in.
vanilllacakez 45 points 9m ago
That’s so weird I’ve gotten paid $60 for training each person
MrsClaireUnderwood 27 points 9m ago
This is correct and you get that pay regardless of how long they stay with the company.
haydensidun 5 points 9m ago
My SM lied to me about my bonus. When I became a trainer, my SM told me that the bonus was $80. When I actually got my first bonuses it was only $65. I know it’s only a $15 difference, but I was pissed nonetheless.

Make sure to verify your bonus with someone other than your SM just to be sure. Keep them honest about it.
GoldennTrash [OP] 18 points 9m ago
i’m not sure tbh. i looked it up on reddit and ppl said they were getting $60-65. i had initially asked my asm, but she didn’t know so had asked a shift and shift said $50. i feel like that’s wrong though, so will ask sm when i see her again
gabby24681 19 points 9m ago
Just trained somebody and got $65 confirmed if that helps. I think they changed it when the training period changed.
GoldennTrash [OP] 3 points 9m ago
thank you this is helpful. hopefully it’s the same, but i suppose different states give different amounts
gabby24681 2 points 9m ago
That’s also what I was thinking because I had hear $75 before I got mine 😅
Acrolophosaurus 1 points 9m ago
It’s 80 over in CLE
edreesmiraki 1 points 9m ago
cle?
idownvotepunstoo 2 points 9m ago
CLEveland
mangotangoafterdark 26 points 9m ago
do it so you know they’re trained right tbh
GoldennTrash [OP] 6 points 9m ago
you’re absolutely right
GarbageValuable1888 4 points 9m ago
as someone who has trained 12 baristas and counting, not all of them end up doing well - no matter how hard you try 😞
mangotangoafterdark 1 points 9m ago
that doesn’t mean you didn’t train them right haha just giving them the best possible chance to succeed
badbaristuh 26 points 9m ago
Huh, my training bonus was always $75 here in southern CA. I liked training, personally. You’re not scheduled as coverage, and should only expect to work coverage during the time your green bean is doing modules or if you’re heavily understaffed (in that case, I’d reconsider). You get to learn other peoples’ learning styles, touch back on the basics yourself, and understand how to gently correct mistakes you see for a more consistent store experience. It looks great on a résumé, as does being a supervisor, and this is a good skill to master as part of moving up if you choose to. I also liked that I was learning new things as I was training people, because being a knowledge sponge made my job a million times easier when I always had the answer to a problem. It’s totally up to your working style — if you’re happy to lean on others for support/learn as you go and show up and do your job, then staying a barista might be your sweet spot. If you’re a little bored and ready to explore new territory, and excited to teach someone what you’ve learned so far, being a trainer could be perfect. Good luck either way!
gabby24681 17 points 9m ago
Personally, I love training. I like to break up the monotony of every day barista work. It really only gets stressful when the store is busy and you have to take up a bar and then every ssv is asking you to run various errands when you’re trying to explain what microform is.
giftedburn0ut 14 points 9m ago
wait hold on I see y'all are in agreement here that apparently I should have been paid for training....
GoldennTrash [OP] 5 points 9m ago
noooo i would be asking for that money lol
giftedburn0ut 5 points 9m ago
noted I'll ask haha
kennsnaps 10 points 9m ago
I live in Ontario and it's $100 per person. But I'd say it's still worth it, it's a good change of pace. Sometimes get sick of my own voice though 😂
LOAD1NG_PROFILE 2 points 9m ago
Sorry, Canada or California?
kennsnaps 2 points 9m ago
Canada! :)
No-Analysis-1813 8 points 9m ago
TWO WEEK TRAINING??? My training was only four days! We did two days on videos and two days on the floor then got put to work
truecrimeANDchill 6 points 9m ago
Training is 44 hours per new hire now.
GoldennTrash [OP] 5 points 9m ago
yea i believe training is supposed to last 2 weeks although ik it doesn’t always happen like that
fredforthered 7 points 9m ago
There’s always the option of not having training pay. I trained in the 2000s and we didn’t receive extra pay. My current company started paying out for within the last 2 years even thought I wasn’t paid when I trained people years ago. All to say, take the fucking money. Take all the money that’s offered. You’ve earned it. The training experience also looks good on the resume when you’re ready to switch to other roles.
GoldennTrash [OP] 4 points 9m ago
this is great! thank you!
lilkiosk 6 points 9m ago
I liked it honestly. I didn’t care too much about the bonus but I was training before officially being a trainer so getting the bonus was nice. But I loved helping other people learn and get better at a job I was doing pretty well at!
GoldennTrash [OP] 1 points 9m ago
yea i do get a sense of accomplishment as i’ve trained one person before, but it was kinda fun so hopefully i’ll fully enjoy it
Accomplished_Past_10 4 points 9m ago
You basically get to be doing your job but teaching someone lol, and youre technically not a position either so you get out of dealing with customers and doing tasks😂
wellbemissingyou 4 points 9m ago
I was told that I’d be getting an extra .75 cents per hour and I should be getting my first check with it on there this week so I’ll keep you updated
jams1015 4 points 9m ago
I got $75 every time I trained someone.
Freezykiwi 1 points 9m ago
Same
heartbreakhigh 3 points 9m ago
yes but hold your sm accountable for actually giving you your bonus. ensuring trainers actually get paid for their work has been an uphill battle at most stores in my district.
GoldennTrash [OP] 3 points 9m ago
yes i definitely will cause i would rlly hate to be shorted lol
trash_gamer00 3 points 9m ago
As an ex trainer, it was really nice just connecting with future partners and being able to help guide them through the trials and errors (especially the errors lol) of the job. The added bonus was nice, but I'd say, if you like teaching and being able to provide examples and support for green beans, being a trainer is definitely worth it.
GoldennTrash [OP] 3 points 9m ago
i trained someone last about 2 weeks ago. not extensive or anything, just some basic frap recipes. it was actually pretty fun, so i think i could enjoy this
trash_gamer00 2 points 9m ago
Omg I really love that for you! I think as long as you can keep enjoying that experience and having fun with it, you'll definitely find the role enjoyable.
GoldennTrash [OP] 2 points 9m ago
thank you sm!
Lightheaded_gamer 3 points 9m ago
I said yes but never got the chance to train someone 😭
crazycocopuf 3 points 9m ago
No. You don’t get the bonus until they stay with the company for a month (maybe 3? I can’t remember) or so. I think most people are sane enough to quit before that. So its a waste of time.
truecrimeANDchill 25 points 9m ago
This is for the referral bonus. They’re supposed to pay trainers for training regardless of retention.
GoldennTrash [OP] 8 points 9m ago
yea that’s one of the things i worry about as well. luckily there more people that finish their training at my store, but after they may or may not stay after the training period lol, but i’ll definitely ask my ASM about it again. Thank u for the info!
crazycocopuf 5 points 9m ago
Yeah! I didn’t even think about store to store either. Like, everyone runs around like a chicken with their head cut off complaining about how miserable they are: so of course people aren’t gonna wanna stay with that. Not sure how your store is. It could be like the ones where they have downtime to make cute chalk boards and friendships lol.
GoldennTrash [OP] 2 points 9m ago
yea only a few of us complain loudly about the conditions lmao, but we tend to have quite the downtime, but not sure for how long because we’ve started getting a lot busier 🙂
crazycocopuf 2 points 9m ago
Yuppp - everyone at my store is saying we are back to pre-covid busy. Whatever that means tho, I started last October! :-) Good Luck!
MrsClaireUnderwood 2 points 9m ago
They gave you incorrect information.
GoldennTrash [OP] 1 points 9m ago
oh?
MrsClaireUnderwood 2 points 9m ago
They're completely wrong about the duration somebody has to stay at the company.

For training bonuses, YOU get a bonus of $60 regardless of whether the person stays or leaves. That person is confused.
MrsClaireUnderwood 4 points 9m ago
The bonus has nothing to do with retention.
pickled_goblin 2 points 9m ago
I have limited patience so I can get a little stressed training green beans, but I have zero patience for people getting trained improperly and then just having a hard time unlearning bad habits. so i’d rather train them correctly than have someone else do a bad job at it hahaha
GoldennTrash [OP] 2 points 9m ago
that’s a very good point, but luckily i do have quite a bit of patience lol so i think it’ll be good for me
MasterMischievous 2 points 9m ago
I’m not sure of the downsides of being one. It’s all set aside training time that you get paid for. I guess you probably shouldn’t do it if you’re bad at your job, but you shouldn’t have gotten the offer in the first place if that were the case. And it’s extra pay (no matter how much) for something you’d probably have to do anyways.
makmelaf17 2 points 9m ago
That's a week of just explaining our job... while the rest of us is in the fire... you get to observe the flames
James0fAnarchy 2 points 9m ago
depends on your store. it can be really good to make a positive impact on a store that's having trouble keeping employees, or training people incorrectly. but it can be emotionally exhausting if your managers don't take the time to consider your needs. you need to be good at standing up for yourself.
Mr_SCPF 2 points 9m ago
Sure, gets you closer to your SM. Looks good if you want to become a SSV or move up in the company.
libritheacacao 1 points 9m ago
My store manager told me that it was given to whoever trained that person the most. So I rarely ever got a bonus for training new partners. Over time, I didn't see the value in the position of trainer, because of the lack of support from the rest of the team on the floor while training, and the general attitude of annoyance towards new partners. And then any mistakes or lack of knowledge of the new partner comes back to you, and the position can easily be taken away.
rosebudftw 1 points 9m ago
im becoming one because my manager is making me before i become a shift and also because i’m tired of all these new baristas who don’t know how to do shit because they’re not trained properly.
boothbygraffoe 1 points 9m ago
This led me out the door (to another job that began my actual career) in less than 6 months!

Training others is a great step to take and although it’s a tough thing to do well in a high volume location it was a great change of pace.
firepaper 1 points 9m ago
Honestly I say it’s worth it especially if they’re asking you chances are you’re going to be training someone the only difference would be whether or not you go the official route and get paid for it
GoldennTrash [OP] 1 points 9m ago
most definitely going the official route lol
ThereforeIam-14 1 points 9m ago
I was told you only got paid when they stayed for 90 days ? But anyways yes being a trainer is nice !
haydensidun 1 points 9m ago
They lied to me about how much the bonus would be and after I spent my personal time printing out and putting together a binder of training resources, they promised to pay me for that time and never did.

The experience was rewarding, but I had to work long shifts training baristas. Sometimes we would spend hours on one thing and we’d have to work around everyone else. It was also cool that I got to dictate when we took breaks and all but that’s about it.

Also don’t do it if you have a shitty manager. The manager who made a barista trainer let me have control over the training process, scheduled me the time I needed to completely train each barista, and only consulted with me on each training plan. The second manager wanted complete control over the training process and not only froze me (then the store’s only barista trainer) out of the process, but started allowing other non-trainer baristas to train new hires.

That being said, if your goal is to be a shift supervisor or go beyond, then this is an essential and important step on that journey.

u guys got training pay??!?!?
Partykweenbee 1 points 9m ago
Yes, you should get a 75$ bonus if you are in the US and 100 in Canada. Talk to your DM if you aren’t getting that
fyodors_anemia 1 points 9m ago
y’all are getting paid to train people ?? tf 😭
Cheap_Mustache 1 points 9m ago
According to my dm there were talks of paying trainers abit more hourly instead, since they expect us to be coaching consistently as well. Not sure if thats a district by district decision though
