destaining pitchers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by deeciphered
Hey guys does anyone have any advice for destaining pitchers? Specifically the ones that hold the pineapple passionfruit refresher base?

Any advice is appreciated.
Bhaisaab86 209 points 9m ago
The pineapple pitchers will never be clean. Those are permanently stained/damaged.

Can’t wait for this battery acid to be discontinued.
Low_Committee_1312 67 points 9m ago
Right? At most 3 people order this nasty shit in a day and the inclusions clump up together cause they don’t get touched and just ughhhh
NeonCloudAstro 27 points 9m ago
maybe at your store it isn't very popular, but it's one of our best sellers at my store now 😭
Low_Committee_1312 4 points 9m ago
I work at a popular store in Southern California maybe it’s just regional nobody gets it here lol
Snarfungus 1 points 9m ago
we sell a ton of it at my store, i doubt it’ll be discontinued haha. we also had a problem with a pink pitcher lid bleeding color into the pineapple base. makes me wonder how acidic it is
MessatineSnows 78 points 9m ago
fill the stained pitchers with boiling water and whatever you use in the wash sink. let it sit. probably won’t get the stain out but it’ll remove a bunch of the flavour. btw, anyone else getting complaints from customers about the teas tasting “fruity” or “floral”? i’m pretty sure it’s the pineapple stains… <_<;;
foreverjanessa 50 points 9m ago
You guys should dedicate only one or two pitches to pineapple only. That pineapple flavor does not wash out
SaevioAvis 40 points 9m ago
It’s also a known allergen. I literally cannot have anything from a shaker since we’ve started the ppf. I’m severely allergic to pineapple and after the first few days just shaking it my mouth felt like tv static. I was doing “family time” and made a shaken matcha with customizations for everyone and didn’t think to rinse out the shaker and had to go to urgent care when my throat swelled up. I don’t trust any store to not have cross contamination with the pineapple now. I thought with it being mostly grape juice I wouldn’t be affected but whatever is in the “natural ingredients” has some semblance of pineapple.
Agreeable-Lack1869 16 points 9m ago
… the ppf doesn’t have actual pineapple in it. It’s white grapefruit. The only pineapple is the pieces so that’s what you are reacting to. Try to let everyone aware of ur allergen. I’m sorry you got sick 😭
dazedandconfusedhere 10 points 9m ago
It also has “natural flavors” which can include real fruit such as pineapple
GarbageValuable1888 3 points 9m ago
Isn’t the base just grapefruit? Wouldn’t the only allergen be the inclusions?
SaevioAvis 6 points 9m ago
Yeah that’s what we thought too. But even without pieces, I’m reacting to something.
Wspitsamanda 5 points 9m ago
i had a guy ask for us not to shake his tea because when it goes it the shaker it comes out tasting like pineapple >~>

Don't use restroom cleaner like people are suggesting, it's super against policy and super bad for plastics. Restroom cleaner is a bleach mix and bleach will corrode the plastic.

You can do an Urnex soak and that may help, but it will require a LOT of elbow grease no matter what. Gotta go to town on it with the blue scrubby as much as you can
vanilllacakez 37 points 9m ago
Pretty sure restroom cleaner isn’t food safe..
bubblegumm002 8 points 9m ago
you are correct it definitely is not
dazedandconfusedhere 13 points 9m ago
The bottle literally says “food contact surfaces rinse with potable water before reuse”
urlessies 2 points 9m ago
there’s bleach in it and bleach corrodes plastic

ElevatorsAreScary 5 points 9m ago
I mean even if it was food safe, mixing chemicals is not a good idea. The bleach would be going through the sanitizer
butterflymomo 30 points 9m ago
not sure if it's allowed so *hypothetically* sometimes i let them sit with restroom cleaner on them and give them a good scrub with it before going in the dishwasher
grannysdingleberries 30 points 9m ago
id (hypothetically) fill a sink with hot water, an urnex packet, and bleach and let them soak for 10 then clean them regularly a few times. always works for me (hypothetically)✨
dazedandconfusedhere 32 points 9m ago
Please don’t combine chemicals, that can be SUPER dangerous
RyusuiJL 23 points 9m ago
I was told that we're never supposed to use Urnex on plastics.

FWIW, I was only told that after I had done it and yes - it worked well for the tea and coffee pitchers. But man...it did NOT affect the PPF pitchers AT ALL! 😵‍💫
dazedandconfusedhere 20 points 9m ago
The packet of urnex says it’s safe on plastic 👀
noeyoureatowel 19 points 9m ago
Urnex is safe for plastics but should never be mixed with bleach.
StormTheParade 8 points 9m ago
It should be never use restroom cleaner, not urnex. Restroom cleaner is a bleach mix and is corrosive to plastic, so it can break down the pitcher and give bacteria places to grow
grannysdingleberries 5 points 9m ago
whoops i was never taught that 🙃 and yeah the ppf will be the death of me i dont even bother with the pitchers anymore 😭
DeltaOmegaX 15 points 9m ago
Down voting for the suggestion of using bleach. Bleach can kill people. It isn't food safe. Please don't use bleach.
SNES182 20 points 9m ago
This is a health hazard, and the pitcher would need to be thrown out.
butterflymomo -1 points 9m ago
yeah that's why i said hypothetically i would *never* do this 🤭
psych-d 2 points 9m ago
(272, ‘retired’ lol) in this hypothetical situation i would add an extra rinse before going in the dishwasher. but i certainly wouldn’t know for certain because i can assure you ive never done this before🫡
butterflymomo 0 points 9m ago
oh yeah hypothetically they always get rinsed off before going in there
bigwesut 14 points 9m ago
Order new pitchers, rotate out the old ones that are stained and relegate specific pitchers to PPR base only.
trousersquid 10 points 9m ago
This. It's not worth the elbow grease. Most I do is soak it in warm wash, scrub as much as I can without getting behind on the rest, then call it a day. When that no longer works, ditch it and get new ones.
dazedandconfusedhere 2 points 9m ago
Wish they’d let us order new pitchers 🥲
bigwesut 1 points 9m ago
Better to ask for forgiveness than permission. 😇
dazedandconfusedhere 2 points 9m ago
Oh we’ve tried, they’re just not orderable right now 🙃
bigwesut 2 points 9m ago
Here’s your SKU: 011095386. Order it and they have to either credit you or ship it when it comes back in stock in the warehouse. 😜
StillLearning12358 2 points 9m ago
This is what we did. Ordered new pitchers and dedicated 2 for ppr only. I used a label maker to mark them and as one empties I make a new batch. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a new batch so it's really easy to keep rotating them.
fruutlup 1 points 9m ago
i wish my store could be on the same page for at least this :’) there’s always at least one barista that decides not to care, and another always follows until every pitcher is stained. again :’’’)
LambCHOP6988 11 points 9m ago
Been a minute since I've been a partner, but urnex worked wonders for a stained pitcher(s). Don't even have to use a pack specifically for the pitcher, just use the water from the brewer when cleaning it.
charamander_ 11 points 9m ago
pineapple passionfruit stains are stronger than urnex
megs1288 7 points 9m ago
Yep. I did urnex and water from the brewer …still orange stains
SnooShortcuts8570 3 points 9m ago
I never thought of using the water from the brewer. Do you know how long to let it sit in the pitchers?
LambCHOP6988 2 points 9m ago
Bout 10 minutes or so; I forgot to say that scrubbing is the most important part, urnex just made it easier.
mysteriousjuror 7 points 9m ago
I usually use Cafiza pills. Fill the pitchers with hot water and drop 2-4 pills in them and let it sit for a bit. Then scrub them out with blue soap and sanitize. Hopefully, that works. I also, love doing this with cubes and steaming pitchers.
noeyoureatowel 7 points 9m ago
Soak with urnex and scrub with the blue pad. Do NOT use magic erasers or restroom cleaner as neither are food contact safe.
SnooShortcuts8570 3 points 9m ago
stores have magic erasers??
_coca_cola_cherry_ 4 points 9m ago
The best you can do is only use the most stained pitchers for the pineapple refresher, at least most of your pitchers will be saved
Have_Donut 3 points 9m ago
I am convinced nothing short of progressive sanding with 500,1000, and then 1500 grit sandpaper will get it clean and clear again
darth_zannah02 2 points 9m ago
I don’t know about the pineapple but if you use the bar tabs with hot water from the brewer for drip coffees and let it sit and dissolve for at least 15 minutes and then take a blue scrubby pad to it will get it pretty clean! Or an Urnex soak but that’s gonna take a hell of a lot more elbow grease and scrubbing than the tabs.

Just you make sure to rinse/wash the pitchers EXTREMELY well after the tab!
Ajskdjurj 2 points 9m ago
I tried urnx and water doesn’t get the pineapple off. It can get the iced coffee bin clean. I send it through the dishwasher multiple times.
kristis3233 2 points 9m ago
Dedicate 2/3 pitchers for just pineapple, get all new ones and don’t stress ur self bout it. If magic erasers don’t get them cleaned I’m not spending to much energy on it
MessatineSnows 26 points 9m ago
PLEASE do not use magic eraser on food surfaces HOLY SHIT
GarbageValuable1888 1 points 9m ago
Please elaborate, my store has a chronic issue with always using magic erasers.
highspeed06 11 points 9m ago
magic erasers leave tiny scratches in the plastic which harbor bacteria, it’s a pretty serious food safety hazard and you’d need all new pitchers to fix it
I_like_to_know 6 points 9m ago
Magic eraser should never be used on surfaces that come into contact with food. I don't know the why behind but we recently had a visit from someone in the food safety department and he was adamant about this.
MessatineSnows 0 points 9m ago
Magic Erasers are a known carcinogen
borrowedurmumsvcard 1 points 9m ago
we use magic erasers for coffee and tea stains but I haven’t found anything that will take the ppr stains out
darklordnickel 1 points 9m ago
Urnex, but be careful!! That shit will burn your skin and probably only want to use it during a clean play since some partners might not know. I’ve also used the magic erasers, but it takes FOREVER. Good luck!
croissantboyy 1 points 9m ago
cafiza tabs and hot water. work the BESTTTT.

DO NOT USE RESTROOM CLEANER
nonogender 1 points 9m ago
you really gotta scrub stuff. some people will only rinse dishes so it looks like theyre stained, but in the case of most coffee "stains," it's probably just not been scrubbed in a while and isnt actually clean. if it's real tough stains then you could try magic eraser or urnex/hot water soaks
Itsmerightme 1 points 9m ago
Kay5 solution
Vegan_Sweetie 1 points 9m ago
I have heard tell… that the tabs for cleaning the bar, if put into the dishwasher WITH the pitchers will get the pineapple off. I don’t know if it’s true though. 🤷🏼‍♀️
couch_mermaid 1 points 9m ago
Urnex takes the coffee/tea stain out
dirtychai0218 1 points 9m ago
i’ve found that a packet of Kay-5 and hot water gets a good bit of the stain out. not all but most
xiew 1 points 9m ago
2 packets of urnex boiling water and let it soak for an hour or 2 before scrubbing. Left mine this morning in the back sink for like 7 hours lmao and took a decent amount of color out.
taaylorjean 1 points 9m ago
Urnex and hot water, let it sit for a while, rinse 3 times with hot water
Vauxiliatrix 1 points 9m ago
urnex works wonders :)
BaristaInTrouble 1 points 9m ago
I let them sit full of the blue washing fluid for 10-20 minutes (so immediately after they’re empty i just filled em so they were ready to go when it was dish time) and hit em with a firm-type sponge/scouring pad. It went pretty well. Just make sure to do the full wash cycle afterwards
ElevatorsAreScary 5 points 9m ago
People suggesting bleach and magic erasers which aren’t food safe. Really, if you can’t clean it using the proper cleaners, then maybe it’s time to replace it. If it costs Starbucks more in pitchers than the refresher sales, maybe they’ll get rid of it
biscuittoaster 1 points 9m ago
Reading all these... all I do is scrube the sh*t out of them with hot soap water and poof. They're clean. All you need to do is scrub them. At least that's what I do :/ the pineapple one doesn't scrub away too easy tho, that one gets soaked c.c
GinasteraBabe 0 points 9m ago
I've found you can remove a decent amount with a blue scratch pad and dry rag for dishes, or if you have any, magic erasers do wonders with the staining
Flimsy_Opportunity87 0 points 9m ago
Magic eraser!
Virtual_Engine7360 -5 points 9m ago
We use pure bleach and then just make sure to clean it really well
BetterThanStarlight -3 points 9m ago
We use magic erasers, works on all but the pineapple acid
lilbopeep185 -1 points 9m ago
It’s not standard but oven cleaner will get rid of it
Necessary_Low939 -1 points 9m ago
Nope. And if u ever drank that refresher, it is probably still stained in ur body
LilacFlores -1 points 9m ago
The blue sanitizer spray works sooooo much better then the restroom cleaner when getting rid of the stains in pitchers. Just need a rag to wipe it away.
Lcolecrochet -1 points 9m ago
Restroom cleaner works wonders….but you didn’t hear that from me
urlessies 4 points 9m ago
please don’t use these! it’s a food hazard and the bleach in it corrodes the plastic
