Kinda a rant but mixed in with a question. So I had my first official day on the floor, which happened to be Saturday. It was absolute chaos. The manager wasn’t there, and no one on board knew my skill level. Right when I walked in, a co worker hands me a cup and said make this. I froze for a sec and somehow made it, (was only a venti iced coffee with cream). Then they wanted me to make a Frappuccino. Remember, I haven’t even touched a cup until now. How the fuck would I know how to make one? So naturally i look over and Im like “hey this is my first day, I have absolutely no clue” and then everyone on deck started to trade me off to do easy stuff. I ended up on window, which is fine, it wasn’t too bad. The only thing that frustrates me is apparently the managers communication to the team is poor. Im just wondering, for the rest of my training is this the norm? EDIT- manager and everyone there is very sweet and admit they are understaffed. I understand that managers are busy but it would’ve been nice for them to inform the others who I was and what I should have been doing.

Wait today was your first day and you had no trainer at all? You should have had iPad modules and things to do to learn basics before you are even practicing on the floor. For example, iced coffee gets classic syrup by default but that’s not listed on the sticker and you would have had no way to know that.
Please reach out to your SM, they should have had a training schedule written up with dates of what you will cover and when. This is not normal. I’m sorry you had to deal with that.

The day I worked previous to this, I did a number of the modules. They gave me a quick tour and that was that. I talked with my trainer for a brief moment. And she was like “you’re honestly not going to see me much because I’m going on vacation” which is confusing. The next day I was scheduled was on Saturday. Which is the situation I described above ahaha. The manager told me I would be doing the modules as I work with a trainer, but that didn’t seem to be the case at all. Ahaha and thank you for your response, it makes me feel less crazy.

Absolutely. Follow up with your SM and say, “so since my trainer is on vacation who will be taking over the practical training portions?” Because part of the new training includes a period where you simply observe the position and how it works before you do it yourself.

oh no you’re not supposed to be making drinks until you’re fully trained on bar. we can’t let people pay for those drinks, they have to be handed out as free drinks until you’ve completed training. you shouldn’t be on bar.

That’s funny they had me making pink drinks, coffees and refreshers at the beginning bahahah. I guess my location sucks

yeah we got in trouble by our sm when a trainee was working on learning cold foams, and they made a perfectly fine salted foam we needed at the same time, but we weren’t allowed to use it bc they were still training.

sadly yes it is normal. i’ve been on both sides of this problem. when i was new I was lucky enough to have a trainer that pushed for me to learn but because I was new and she wasn’t always around i’d end up stuck at window. now that i’m a SSV, i try to make sure to touch base w new ppl and assess where they are at. however, this doesn’t always apply to everyone. it’s definitely hectic on weekends and it’s kind of a free for all ngl. you get used to it esp since when there are a lot of new ppl and not enough time to train. chances are you will get pushed off to the side. it sucks that it happens but there’s little we can work with
