Ringing it up as a Custom Tea(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GrayCera12
I’m kinda confused with this. I understand when people order the cup of water with strawberries and we ring that up as a custom tea. Well, a customer comes in and he orders a cup of water, but with some lemonade in it. The other day my SSV rung him up as a custom tea and he flipped saying how he came last time and it was supposed to be .60 cents and stormed out. Then, the customer came back and this time my SM rung him up for .60 cents… so I am very confused. 😅 So idk what do you guys think? Do we even ring it up when people order a cup of water with whip cream? Like I was told in training that if people make customizations with water we charge them as custom tea.

They prob didn't want to fight him. But I do custom tea

Right?? And yeah, I feel like my SM didn’t want to deal with him and just rung him the .60 cents, but I just feel bad to any Starbucks he goes to since we would ring him up that way. And he’ll be all like “No I went to a Starbucks and I had to pay 0.60 cents for this drink.” 😓

When people do that to me, I will explain why it costs extra for stuff and if they can't take no for a answer, I will either ask if they are going to pay or not and if they say no, I either go back to what I was doing or help the next person.
Rude I know, but I rather get written up for being rude than not charging people correct.

oh yeah i got repeatedly snapped at by a customer for this bc she couldn't understand why her tall cup of dragonfruit inclusions was getting rung as a custom tea when "everywhere else does it for 80 cents!"
well go to 'everywhere else' then.

I believe Starbucks had an update about it and said it had to be custom tea. I remember reading it somewhere. Most likely manager wanted to make the “moment right” and tell them it’s okay this time but next time will be charged as custom tea.

I really hate their “make it right” policy, because it always turns into “just break the rule we have.”

you’re correct. we also had a problem with customers getting pissed about it, so we had printed out a sheet specifying that drinks like that have to be charged as custom teas that was made by corporate lol, but it was taken down
Virtual_Engine73601 points9m ago
Can I get the link to said sheet please? 😂

i honestly tried looking for it, but i don’t have it lol. one of my past asm took it down and i never saw it again 😐

This started when there was a large number of customers ordering water with scoops of matcha. It was also like 60 cents and became a starbucks hack that created the custome iced tea option
clouds1832 points9m ago
would that be rung up as a matcha lemonade with no lemonade?
kcly931 points9m ago
Thats not a bad idea but it would be a custom iced tea near the iced tea selections and then add matcha
clouds1831 points9m ago
is that a standard?
since the matcha lemonade comes with half water half lemonade, no lemonade would be a matcha water
kcly931 points9m ago
Its been a while since it happened and im pretty terrible with the weekly updates. But I would put my money on that the standard would still be a custom iced tea for matcha water. Its likely similar in price to what a matcha lemonade with no lemonade would be anyways though.

counterpoint: Venti Ice Water w/ Ask me- 2 scoops matcha
clouds1834 points9m ago
thats shitty that your sm doesn’t have your back on things like that. they should be the ones that enforce the standards, not break them.

I wonder if people try to do the same thing at local coffee shops, or if it's an exclusively Starbucks thing. I always charge correctly (custom iced tea, always) but about half the time I catch massive attitude from the customer over it and at that point its hard to continue to follow policy while also trying to de-escalate someone who wants me fired for following it.

I would either do a custom tea or a lemonade(light lemonade/add water), whichever was cheaper (as long as the labor and ingredients are accounted for)
