If it makes you feel any better I’ve been practicing since 2013!
And aside from using the steps for the flat white, which are actually pretty useful, I think the key when teaching yourself (like we usually have to do with latte art at the bux) is to watch all the YouTube videos you can find aimed at beginners. And then go slow when you’re practicing and pay attention to the way the milk behaves when you pour. A lot of the movement involved is very soft and subtle.
Also, don’t over-aerate your milk or tap your pitcher on the counter too much or too hard trying to eliminate bubbles.
