not getting a second 10 at my new store? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dankmobile
(apologies for a venti post while i ask y’all something)

for context, i’ve been working for Starbucks since March, and I just transferred to a new store in my new city. it’s much busier than my last store and a drive through, but i’m enjoying it.

anyway, at my first store, the SM was on the newer side and had asked our partners if they’d rather do 15 minute breaks instead of 10s, and obviously we said yes. Normally for a longer shift with a meal, we would only take one 15 and one 30. My husband works for SB too and at his stores they’ve all done tens which I understand to be normal.

My issue now with this new store is when I work 8-9 hours, I only ever get one 10 and one 30. Sometimes I’ll get my half three hours into my shift and still have almost 6 hours left when i get back. It’s honestly been really tough with such a high volume place.

Is this normal? My husband almost always gets a second 10 minute break during longer shifts. Does anyone know what the working max for breaks is? I moved from MD to VA if that makes any difference.

I’m in VA too but the rules are the same across the US, except for CA and a few other places where laws mandate more breaks. But if your shift start and end times are at least 7 hours apart, you **must** get a 30 and two tens.

You should be able to see the DCR (daily coverage report) that the shifts use to plan out the day. It will have everyone’s shift for each day and it auto-generates the required breaks. You don’t have to get them all at the specific times on the DCR, but if it shows 2 tens, then the shift must offer you 2 tens. It’s their and the store manager’s responsibility to staff the store with enough coverage for people to take breaks.

If your manager isn’t willing to give you your required breaks, go above them to your DM, and then the ethics & compliance department. Virginia has no legal requirement for breaks, but your store is breaking company policies.

This is useful info. One of my managers has told me that whether or not I get my second 10 is dependent on how busy we are. Needless to say I felt duped

this is exactly what i thought, thank you. our DCR will show a meal and two 10s but no one (including me) ever gets a second. I’ll definitely be bringing it up to my SM to see what that’s about

There’s a common misconception that the second ten is “optional” or only to be given as business allows

This is NOT true, and you are required to take all breaks scheduled on the dcr (this policy is in the partner guide)

The problem is there’s no way to really “track” if you were given a second10, so it’s easy to get away with skipping it
