It is that bad, especially for customers who are trying to get in and out quickly (the point of the drive thru). If it was a mobile order placed 5-10 minutes ago and they're just going to pick it up, that's not bad. During the morning rush, no one wants to wait for your big order when the four cars behind you only ordered two to three items each on average.

I've literally had customers yell and honk at cars who've had 6+ item orders. Is it shitty to do? Yes, and who gets to deal with them once the car they're mad at is gone? The workers, and we literally can't help them with their issue so they just stay mad.

A big order is best placed ahead through mobile, always.
