Gaslighted by coworker and customer(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bubblecumpink
This lady comes in and orders a tall iced latte, and complained there wasn’t enough coffee taste.
I told her that’s because it only comes with one shot. My coworker answers and it’s like no it’s two, all iced drinks get an added shot. And this lady was like yea it’s two. And I was just standing there as he’s adding a whole other shot in her drink.
I go to the register to see if I’m wrong, I put in an tall iced latte and it said one shot. I told him that and he’s like no cuz it’s iced, which I respond I put it in as iced! I went to go check the recipes cards, BOOM 1 shot.
Spoke to my SS and my coworker who is a trainer and they both told me yea no it’s one shot for a tall. Like bro I studied these recipes cuz I was so embarrassed that I didn’t know how to make anything without asking questions. It made me so mad because in reality you’re doing it wrong cuz the added shot only applies to FW, Americanos and Shaken espressos which would then make it 2 for a tall.

Wow lol what a weirdo. Theyre literally guna stick to the 2 shots story. Like what was their response when u said u put in TALL ICED latte on register and it showed 1 shot and also same for that on the recipe cards?
bubblecumpink [OP]52 points9m ago
He just ignored me and handed back her drink. He didn’t even bother checking the register when I was pointing at it.
Responsible_Snow710943 points9m ago
Oh of course he wouldnt look at the register when u tried showing it to him, cuz it will show what he said was incorrect and that will make him embarrassed. Some people simply cannot bring themselves to be like "oh crap i was wrong! My bad!" Or something along those lines. Coworkers should always have coworkers backs. If both u and customer are saying something different and a coworker it's going to step in to add their two cents, they should at least verify what they are about to say and then have your back because you actually looked at the recipe.
Edit: fixed a typo

I hate people like that
politelymalicious43 points9m ago
if they look on the app, when you order it will say 1 shot as well for a tall latte. just to really rub it in
bubblecumpink [OP]23 points9m ago
Bro thank you! I was so mad cuz this lady wanted to seem big brain and tell me how to do my job. Ik she had the app too, so it was frustrating getting gaslit like that
salaciainthedepths6 points9m ago
Idk if it’s anything to do with it but it’s only in the US that a tall gets one shot. In other markets talls get 2 shots in every drink containing espresso that I can think of

Good on you for looking up the recipe card and correcting your coworker. I would always encourage baristas to look up the standard in the recipe card if there's even a little doubt. As a trainer and lead, when someone asked me about a recipe, I would say "let's go look it up," even though I know the answer. That was to normalize using the recipe cards, make it a habit, and get baristas comfortable using the cards.
bubblecumpink [OP]12 points9m ago
Thank you🥹I would always read them before every shift when I first started cuz I just wanted to be better and not in the way. They help so much
madisonla23 points9m ago
Plus they said that IN FRONT of the customer???? That’s a no for this exact reason.
bubblecumpink [OP]10 points9m ago
Dude yes, like it was embarrassing because the lady thought she was right and was like yea no there’s supposed to be two shots. It was so frustrating
badbaristuh14 points9m ago
it’s actually policy that you’re not supposed to throw your coworkers under the bus by making public and humiliating corrections like that. Idk, maybe just mention offhand to your SM that this occurred because that’s absolutely a conversation that needs to be had between them. It’s not a good strategy for anyone involved, regardless of who is correct (in this case, you)

lmaoo what a dumbass

Dude we had a lady who would always come in and get a tall iced soy cap back when we did those iced and one time she ordered it from me for the first time (conveniently after the week I had studied how to make those) and I (for some reason god knows why) asked if she wanted soy for the milk and soy for the foam. She was like nah it’s just foam just soy foam and so I said “oh so you just want foam you don’t wanna do the milk?” And she just went on about how the drink isn’t ever made with milk and foam and my coworker overheard the conversation and came over to help so I was like oh good once she hears it from someone else she’ll have to listen but THIS DUDE just goes that’s ok PARTNERS NAME, I know what she wants I got it…
👀 So now because this guy wanted to be the cool barista this lady always thinks I’m an idiot and doesn’t know how to make the thing it is my job to make.
Anyway all that to say TL;DR I understand your plight
uwumoment2 points9m ago
tee hee i used to have a partner who acted this way and was an ssv but they’re separated now 😋 did you talk to your manager about it? especially if they’re a trainer or an ssv that’s a coaching and teaching moment (even though you knew the recipe, they should have gone over what was “correct” with you so you could make it) not a “let me take over and do it myself” moment

Stand your ground. Good for you.
OneRoseDark7 points9m ago
iced VENTI drinks get an added shot.
Fantastic13577 points9m ago
I would’ve thrown hands but that’s just me
Disastrous_Iron_56475 points9m ago
no literally lmfaooo i was looking for someone to say this
Agreeable-Shock73064 points9m ago
I had a similar situation.
Customer and my SSV tried to argue with me that peach green tea didn’t get water added. I even checked the POS and pulled out the beverage recipe card to show them but they both treated me very condescendingly.
I had just gotten out of an abusive relationship where I was gaslighted and was questioning my reality of everything. This situation had me close to tears because despite having multiple physical evidence in front of me supporting me, they still made me feel like I was crazy.
MovieSoft25543 points9m ago
i would be SO mad bro
francescugh1 points9m ago
idk if gaslight is the word, i think they were just misinformed.
bubblecumpink [OP]1 points9m ago
I felt like it was because even tho he knew he was wrong, which is why he didn’t bother checking the register, he continues to pursue that it is two shots not one.
