My SM hates me? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SteakExtra9810
I may or may not be overthinking… but
I’m on my last two days of training and I’ve noticed that my SM just tells me to clean everything in the store instead of learning how to make drinks or do anything else. I know I’m new and still learning, but I want to be able to feel like a “barista” and get the practice for the hot/cold bars like everyone else there. Most of my training was the online learning modules and I’ve only made a couple of drinks (which were made well!). I thought I’d get more practice later on, yet feel like a janitor.

Don’t know whether I’m supposed to voice my opinions to the SM (since she doesn’t really give a friendly vibe) or if I’m supposed to talk to someone else. 😢

That’s normal. They don’t hate you, you’re just a newb so you get newb tasks… but don’t be afraid to ask for bar time, after training, if you’re not getting any. The times greenies can bar is strategic and has to planned in a way to set you up for success - strong partner to bar with you, the right time of day, etc… you’ll see more with time, and maybe they just hate you but that possibility is much much tinier than it just being a typical experience which is how it seems by your description. (Also even experienced fast baristas get stuck on ovens a ton for a few shifts or end up cleaning bathrooms 3xs that week, it’s just how it goes sometimes)

This is not normal if they are still IN training. The new training plans have a LOT more hands-on practice that should be taking place

At the high volume drive thru i worked at it was definitely more normal for greenies bar time to be very limited and training interrupted, and some SSVs were better about giving GBs bar than others some just seemed nervous to let them try. The partners would whisper to the GBs “go ask, go ask” and that would normally help. At the cafe only location I worked at GBs got a lot more bar time. What’s normal is subjective, it’s not helping them to be shorted bar time but it doesn’t mean they’re hated. It usually means that since it’s not happening to get the time they need to learn they will have to take more personal initiative to ask for it.

The new training plan is designed to be two weeks of work with your trainer, with a LOT more time practicing under the guidance of your trainer, specifically to avoid some of the issues you’re mentioning.

If they’re out of training, then doing more cleaning tasks and not getting on bar much is really common. But they said they’re in their last two days of training - they should be working 1-1 with a trainer and not just cleaning things in the store. That’s why the whole training program was redesigned

The point is if something isn’t happening the way it should be it doesn’t typically mean they hate you.

yes i take my green beans WITH me on bar, i don’t put them there alone but they’re never just cleaning

It’s mostly from that one SM, but I won’t take it personally. I just kinda expected to do more during the day since we weren’t that busy.

Don’t be afraid to ask because it is pretty normal (depending on who is running plays) to not get much time on bar at first so if you want something you gotta say it - while expecting it to sometimes be a no. Saying “I’d like to try more time on bar today” asking early in your shift gives them the opportunity to try to organize it for you and also for them to observe you doing well at other tasks knowing that you want bar time it looks good for you. Every manager/SSV is different and some are better than others about this type of stuff so just respectfully keep advocating for yourself and it will pick up.
