DM rules getting ridiculous (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by poopman16
so my manager is a great woman who tries very hard. over the past 4 months out temp DM has been literally pulling rules out of her ass and it's honestly ridiculous. today someone asked if someone could cover their shift for tomorrow in the morning, i didn't mind working a double so i said yes. the shift wouldnt show in the app so i texted my SM letting her know id take that shift. she then told me: starting tomorrow SSV's can only pick up shifts for other SSV's and baristas can only pick up for baristas. this confused me considering ive been pulling doubles and working a lot this last year ive been at the store. apparently its according to a "shift compliment" and she can't have more than 2 shifts working at a time??? is my DM just making up rules for my SM to follow, like i like working more because it gives me something to do so I really don't like when people play about when i work and what shifts i pick up

I recall reading something about there being a “shift compliment” wherein there’s supposed to be a certain ratio of shifts to baristas based on the store’s total labor hours. As in, it’s acceptable to have 1 shift and 1 barista during open and close because you need to have a Keyholder at the store at all times and most stores have a minimum partner number of 2 partners. However, if the store’s labor calls for 4 partners, 3 of those four shouldn’t be SSVs unless there’s a problem with availability, only one should realistically be a SSV.

Likewise, there’s a set number of shifts a store should have based on its hours of operation to meet the requirement of at least 1 Keyholder present and minimal OT.

This is partly to keep labor payrolls down, but also to prevent SMs from promoting baristas to SSVs just because, or because they want to try and give their partners a raise. A good SM should keep the store’s hours of operations and ratio of SSVs to baristas in check.

tldr: yes, I’m pretty sure it’s officially a thing, but I don’t know how enforceable it is nor do I know how often it is actually enforced.

I feel that’s pretty true, especially as the pay rate between SSV and baristas is a decent amount (at base 32 base of shift difference*.
The way I phrased it was weird, sorry.

At base $32/hr where??
poopman16 [OP] 3 points 9m ago
yeah im a shift in OK and i make 18.68 def not 32 lol

$32 difference for a typical 8 hour shift—-which is what you get between the basic barista and SSV pay.
$4.00 * 8 hours = $32.00 difference in labor. Not a base hourly rate of $32. But if you constantly have barista and SSV’s changing shifts that labor difference could easily add up and send you over labor budgets.

It's a new push from corporate from what I can tell. They don't want to "waste" labor by having more than one Shift on at a time. My manager just recently mentioned that she's being pressured to cut out any overlap between SSVs when making the schedule, so it seems like company wide push

interesting, i was more upset about it in the moment because i work like a mule just cause i love working but it'll be nice to not have to pick up as many shifts ig

Og here. Yes the rule is SSV can only cover SSV shifts and same goes for baristas. We get a certain amount of hours for barista and SSV to divide because of pay. SSV picking up barista is against labor. But some manager aren’t properly trained on labor and don’t care as long as the shift is covered.

thats so weird i never knew this! i mean it was a LOT harder when i first started because i was workng maybe 20-25 hrs so i was picking up any shifts i can but now im working like 30-35 and im more financially stable i just thought that was crazy

You can pick up any shifts until your your manager tells you other wise before they are in control of labor. But whose to say you can’t do it at other stores. Wink wink

This seems to circle back around every few years - shift compliment is a thing, when I was an SM we had a morning, mid and night shift every day - their shifts could only overlap by 30 minutes at most.
