Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

my coworker just got fired (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mar121212
I went in for a drink, she used her numbers on me and another friend (I work there, the other friend doesn't) and an hour later our manager took her in the back, showed her a printed out screenshot of the register where she used her numbers on us, and fired her. She has never had a warning or a write-up, but she HAS been reporting incidents with the manager and two shift supervisors to ethics and compliance. We also got a new district manager that is spreading corporate cheeks and tonguing their assholes so hard that she's been firing people all over the district for swearing with no write ups or warnings. What the fuck is going on. DON'T WORRY THOUGH! Our racist, misogynistic, constantly late SSV still has a job and has never gotten in trouble even though he no call/no showed once and then blocked our temp manager when she was trying to get into contact with him!!

EDIT; y’all oh my god, she wasn’t ringing on anyone else’s till. She asked the person on register to use her numbers for us.

If she has proof of the sm letting it slide for others it may help. But doubtful. Never do anything very clearly against the rules when you’re trying to report other people tbh.
rlogranite 100 points 9m ago
Yes, when you're reporting on other people everything you do has to be by the book. This is a good lesson for any work environment not just Starbucks.
rina_m 196 points 9m ago
ive seen partners retaliated against for going to ethics and compliance. this totally checks out and sucks
sleepykilljoy 21 points 9m ago
I feel this is a lot of companies. They’re never really there for you. CVS did the same thing to me when I was assaulted by a coworker.
ValueAffectionate287 8 points 9m ago
I and another former partner were retaliated against on reporting SH by a manager. Starbucks doesn’t give a damn about us. Never have and never will.
rina_m 4 points 9m ago
i myself am afraid to come forward about something that's been happening at our store because of my experiences. almost all the other complainants have left the company and it would be very easy for them to single me out
ValueAffectionate287 3 points 9m ago
If at all possible I recommend transferring. It’s the quietest and simplest way I know of to get away from a situation
rlogranite 1 points 9m ago
Contact your DM and explain that you need guidance and would like to transfer to another store due to that situation.
Vincent_Cromwell27 115 points 9m ago
Sounds like the company is doing a mass layoff after hiring so many people. They do this cycle of mass hire/fire about every 5 years I’ve noticed.
RoughEvidence 16 points 9m ago
Yeah, they fired three store managers in my district.
jazzysoranio 70 points 9m ago
I’m sure they all complain about “labor shortages” too. “No one wants to work in our stores!?!?!!!”
[deleted] 44 points 9m ago
I’m confused, why didn’t you use your numbers for you and your friend? Was it just for 30% off or for the free partner beverage?
-Ana-- 31 points 9m ago
I was wondering this as well.

Few months back my ASM did a deep dive because partners would leave their post to punch in their partner number when their friends/family came in ( they would enter their own numbers on another partners till) to share their discount.

So the way we understand it now is that if you want to share your discount while on shift it goes like this: inform the register partner you want to use your discount, and you have to be on the other side of the till, have your apron off, and the payment has to go through your own personal card. No more just scanning/entering and your friend paying.
Useful-Hold-2737 5 points 9m ago
So if you use your numbers to get a discount for your friends/family it should be fine within Starbucks policy as long as we use our own money to pay for it?
darklordnickel 3 points 9m ago
Yes exactly
-Ana-- 1 points 9m ago
And as long as you're not the one entering/ ringing anything in.

This was the understanding we got from the deep dive and agreement within our store 🤷🏻‍♀️
CareerHistorical6345 41 points 9m ago
Well technically its a partner number for HER and no one else so she’s in the wrong there. The other shit seems like everyone else is in the wrong.
mar121212 [OP] 44 points 9m ago
My manager (before all this) actually told us that if we were on shift we could use our numbers as we pleased, within reason, as long as we weren’t giving the actual numbers to anyone else. She also used to do this for people often. That’s part of the reason it’s so ridiculous, because she didn’t tell anyone that we were going to have to start being more strict, it’s just been going immediately to firing
CareerHistorical6345 18 points 9m ago
Well thats pretty trash. Using your number for another partner sometimes makes sense because they’re logged into POS, but the manager is the one in the wrong if she’s doing all that shit. Shame she has the “power”
lewabwee 12 points 9m ago
She must have gotten in huge trouble, is my guess. I mean the lack of communication is pretty selfish, but she definitely shouldn’t have told y’all you can use your numbers for other people when that’s not the case. That’s a recipe for disaster, which seems to be exactly what happened.
I_like_to_know 7 points 9m ago
I'd reach out to the DM and say you're looking for some clarification, your manager has said it's ok to use your numbers to provide drinks for others for free, they've done it themselves, but a valuable partner was just fired for it so you'd like to understand if its ok or not. It's not fair that that partner was thrown under the bus for something that's been allowed, and this way there's some accountability on the sm without just ratting them out.
mar121212 [OP] 5 points 9m ago
The DM is actually the problem so I ain’t asking her SHIT 💀 if she wasn’t insane, this would be great advice
mattsilver1 8 points 9m ago
maybe go above her head to your Area Manager
uwumoment 29 points 9m ago
i don’t know what’s been happening recently either. i had a shift at my store who everyone, even customers adored, he worked mornings and always motivated the baristas on the floor, never made anyone panic or feel uncomfortable. he was late a single time and a corporate coach came to our store and sat next to my sm as they basically forced my sm to fire him.

but the racist, misogynist, always bragging about how shifts, everyone hated, calling out ssv still had his job. i took advantage of this and wrote 2-3 written statements about him, exposing how he’d jokingly called people slurs while we told him to stop, and how he cussed on the floor about leaving backups since he didn’t know how to close. he got fucking fired, and it’s the best thing that’s happened to me since i started working with the company.

still though, idk what’s going on and why they’re firing some people who don’t do anything wrong and why it takes so much effort and stress on the baristas part to get the actual bad people fired.
xthefabledfox 8 points 9m ago
Did you send those statements to ethics and compliance or just hand them to your store manager? Asking for a friend 👀
uwumoment 8 points 9m ago
i talked to my store manager and wrote them with her present. she supported me all the way so she told me important things to include. the last one is the one that got him, the others were overlooked bc my manager was on vacation
blackcatcaptions 15 points 9m ago
It's against the law for being fired for retaliation
malletgirl91 15 points 9m ago
Good luck proving it.

Unless your store is unionized Starbucks doesn’t need a reason to fire you. They go over that at hiring don’t they? I know it’s I’d stupidly unfair but I feel like it’s kinda to be expected with this company at this point. I’m sorry for your friend.
idleghost23 8 points 9m ago
I was fired for requesting a day off three weeks in advance for a funeral
mar121212 [OP] 2 points 9m ago
Absolutely fucking hate that for you I’m so sorry
AAA_Morningstar 5 points 9m ago
One of my favorite shift leads always gives us free drinks with our discounts on our days off and she also uses her discount for her best friend/roommate almost every day. This has me worried for her 😞
It_is_Katy 4 points 9m ago
fuck these posts make me so mad, I'm so sorry you have to go through that.
Necessary_Low939 4 points 9m ago
I’m sure she can get rehire elsewhere because it seems bogus—even if she was red flagged. I hope all those higher ups get fire soon. They suck
megs1288 3 points 9m ago
Wait explain to me how he got a screenshot of the register?
mar121212 [OP] 3 points 9m ago
Legit no clue. She (my friend) didn’t know how she (manager) got it either.
STylerMLmusic 2 points 9m ago
It doesn't matter what you do at work, it matters what your boss sees you do. Hard lesson for your coworker to be on their best behaviour if they're reporting higher ups. They are, after all the ones in power.

Not a criticism of your friend really, just a warning. No one is free of retaliation.
MrsOceanGrown 2 points 9m ago
Ugh that’s so stupid. It sounds like these things are intolerable offenses, where they have the right to fire on the first offense. If it were me, I’d go above the DMs head. Find your regional director/manager and explain with specific facts and dates. Ethics and compliance or any resource number given to us is BULLSHIT. That’s how they get you.
MarieCrepes 2 points 9m ago
This is really sad. I'm sorry.
AmberlynMarie 1 points 9m ago
1. If she used her partner numbers on you, it means she was using a till under someone else’s name. (Termination)
2. Partner numbers are only to be used for the actual partner. Not to give out this discount. (Discount policy- also termination).

Ethics and compliance are the only people who can get video recordings. SMs do not have access to rewind the cameras. If there’s a screenshot, they did an investigation.
Brief_Coat6526 1 points 9m ago
Technically it’s steeling so your manager is in the right as far as your SSV call Coronas get him and your manage fired for lack of action
Sea-Nectarine-1522 1 points 9m ago
While I understand using your numbers for others isn’t allowed, someone getting fired for it is a hard pill for me to swallow.. every single store manager I have ever had has had their family members come in on their shifts and my store managers always used their numbers for them to get free drinks. One of my previous managers even had his numbers hooked up to his wife’s Starbucks account and he never got in trouble but was even promoted above store manager. Idk man, I wish I had advice for this situation but I know if I got fired for using my numbers for someone I would personally be irate but that’s because I constantly see all my store managers do it. If they had the audacity to fire someone for doing the same I’d lose my mind.
kaefeen 1 points 9m ago
since you still work there you should try to keep tabs on all the wrong things your manager does as well as the other sh¡tty ssv as revenge
Urmomscoochiehairs 0 points 9m ago
Stage a walk out literally just bring it up by joking and you’ll figure out who’s down
Gameb0i6 -5 points 9m ago
I mean. It’s in the store policy that giving out free drinks is grounds for termination. It’s basically stealing. So don’t get mad at your manager. Your coworker knew what the repercussions would be if they got caught.
ValueAffectionate287 3 points 9m ago
But for any reason at all we can do a right now recovery ? Which is a free drink??? That’s the most ridiculous shit I’ve ever heard.
Gameb0i6 2 points 9m ago
Right now recovery is only to be used when a Mobike order is placed at the wrong location. I’d be cautious of using it. They track it. They once came to investigate my store cuz we used it all the time.
ValueAffectionate287 2 points 9m ago
I’ve never had this said/explained to me, can you point out where in the handbook this is stated? I’ve had my SM use it at a whim (which isn’t saying much, there’s been a few instances I’ve questioned their…… competence as a manager, long story tho). Granted I can count on one hand how much I’ve used if in the past year alone which is to say practically none 🤔
Gameb0i6 1 points 9m ago
It’s not listed in the handbook. But I know it for a fact cuz that’s what my DM & SM have told me. I rarely use it cuz anymore though.

#1 rule, Scrubs get cut. #2 rule, don’t mess with rule #1. As a SM I can tell you that any wonky stuff will get you the eye but can and will be used to remove you if the time comes. Play it straight and there shouldn’t be a problem.
