Today a customer came in and got an iced espresso with some customizations and extra oatmilk (made sure to tell the barista on front reg to tell me to make it with extra oatmilk- that’s when I knew she was going to be mad when I filled it up a little more than half full) I was being generous since she said extra oatmilk. So she comes up to me and was like I asked for extra oatmilk why isn’t this full (then mumbled something about I drink this at work… like okay? That changes the drink you ordered becauseeee???) and I was nice about and explained since it wasn’t a latte (which is mostly milk) I cannot fill it up all of the way. She kept being rude “the other Starbucks does it” and because she was rude I told her I can charge her for a short cup of oatmilk and I won’t upcharge for the non dairy because it was inconvenient (being nice) and explained the cost of the iced espresso and the cup of milk would just about equal out to the cost of a latte. It was 2 something for the milk and then her friend or sister pays and she goes I am so sorry (the persons name) and again she said that the other sbux does it and all I said was well I hope they will follow our standard next time, I’m so sorry about that have a nice day) and she stormed out.
Just wanted to see if I did the right thing or not cause i be overthinking

She just wanted a latte but not for the full price. You were in the right
Normal_Human_456741 points9m ago
I think you did the right thing. Your till person should have said it wouldn't be full, or offered to charge her as a latte.
On a side note, you guys still have the non-dairy charge? We had soy for free and the others 40p, but they got rid of that ages ago- they're all free now
kels0kickflip13 points9m ago
It’s an 80 cent up charge for alternative milk here in Memphis.
Violet4Anime4 points9m ago
Same in Mississippi
galaxia_v11 points9m ago
canada as well
Jaded_Fun_7133 [OP]7 points9m ago
Okay, thank you! And wait really I believe it is still 80 cents. Are you in USA?
Normal_Human_45675 points9m ago
UK! Wow, that's expensive? 40p can't be more than about 50 cents?
Jaded_Fun_7133 [OP]1 points9m ago
Oh wow
pastelldillann14 points9m ago
You did the right thing. My store has been cracking down on this recently too.
SmittyComic12 points9m ago
toast becomes a sandwich at some point and people love to push it.
butter...? yeah, still toast.
and jelly? ... yep.... still toast.
now peanut butter? okay we have a word for that and it's no longer toast. It's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Dry-Consideration76312 points9m ago
Anything over 5oz. Has to be charged as a milk additive
claretamazon13 points9m ago
Isn't it 4oz?
capsule_of_anxiety17 points9m ago
Did it get changed? I always heard if it was over 4oz
Enough_Raise_71678 points9m ago
Yeah it's 4oz. The little plastic sample cups are 4oz.
capsule_of_anxiety16 points9m ago
Ahh ok I thought so
dnims2410 points9m ago
There have been a lot of people doing that “trick” at my store too and whenever I make it the person in dt goes “let’s make sure we’re filling up our cups all the way” and I have to tell them that they didn’t order a latte so that’s how it’s supposed to be. They still end up filling the rest of the cup tho and it’s so frustrating
gingergal-n-dog23 points9m ago
That dt person needs to be pulled off the floor and explained our standards. Their bs causes headaches for the rest of the company. Especially if you're about to reply back that they're in a supervisory role.
dnims248 points9m ago
Nope they’re not in supe anything right now but they insist since they’ve worked there longer that they’re right (even tho I’m a rehire and do in fact know what I’m talking about)
XBL_Unfettered4 points9m ago
If it’s any comfort people were pulling variants of this in the 90’s. It was fucking annoying before DT existed and it just got worse after DT became a thing.
Normal_Human_45677 points9m ago

The US (and Canada I believe) has an up charge for non-dairy milks. $0.70 in my area (would be 0.65 GBP per Google)
hmarie07165 points9m ago
I had two people do this at my store this week. I made sure to let the SSV people are doing this and let them know about the “trick” people are trying by doing this.
Edit: I made sure the cup was not full.
djk11015 points9m ago
You abided by the company policy so in that case you’re not wrong. Personally, I did that to someone too and it was awkward. And I decided that I’m not gonna stand on the front line and defend the company with my life lol, and it doesn’t make much of a difference to me to fill up the cup so long as I don’t get in trouble (like I’d do it when nobody who’d care is around). So from then on, I just filled up the cup if I could tell they wanted it, and as long as it wasn’t crazy work for me, or avoided making customers mad, I’d just oblige because it wasn’t coming out of my pocket and made little actual difference to me. Now if a supervisor was gonna be on my case, I’d have to deal with it differently lol. But I worked nights so i was usually left alone.
Jaded_Fun_7133 [OP]5 points9m ago
That’s fair, I guess sometimes I just get a little petty about it cause they know what they’re doing but after reading what you said why do I even care😂😂😂
Broad-Flounder-49715 points9m ago
I feel both ways. I have pent up aggression from rude customers I need to get out but also, I hate howie more. Ugh!
djk11012 points9m ago
Oh it’s a totally understandable reaction!
Spinelise1 points9m ago
No fr though, and I feel especially petty and even less regretful about it when they get all rude at me as a result. Like that tone where the custie talks down to you as though they know your job better than you- like dang, okay, if you were nice maybe I'd have let you have it but not after you treat me like 💩 for doing my job
Lanky_Rip_54143 points9m ago
I wish we would crack down more. It’s just the principle of it.
Minimum_Onion_47712 points9m ago
Just fill it up with ice. That's what we do at my store, extra extra ice. Full cup=happy customer but still not using as much milk as we would for a latte.
