Do i have to notify hr that i’m pregnant?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by virgo4867
I am a SSV and 16 weeks pregnant. My whole store knows i’m pregnant and i’ve already filed for my maternity leave with sedgwick. One day I asked my SM if it was possible for me to not be scheduled 9 hour shifts back to back because we never have enough coverage for me to take a break and i’m starting to worry it’ll affect my body. He told me i need to contact hr to put in special requests due to my condition. I asked if he meant sedgwick because there was an option to put in a request for reduced hours and he told me no, i need to contact hr to let them know. is this true?
also, i have never brought up stepping down from my position or quitting and he asked me this week if i plan on stepping down when i have the baby. is this legal?

Fuck I don't have any answers for you but this is exactly why I had to leave Starbucks. I didn't get fired, but they kept having me do enormous loads of dishes near the end of my 2nd trimester and I kept throwing my back out. Whatever you do, take good care of your body whenever you can and please defend your free time.

thank you! i’ve been so torn because all of our baristas have been so supportive and help me any way they can but with the increasing stress on partners in general and the things my SM has been putting me through, i want to leave so bad. but i need the health insurance 😩

My doctor had to send in a letter listing my restrictions/accommodations for the “ongoing medical event I was currently under his care for”

I got insanely lucky that my husband's insurance would take care of everything; if you can't leave, please take a step back and remember that you're doing your best even so. I hate to see a good store with good baristas suffer under a toxic SM. You don't deserve that.

Legally he can't ask you those questions more than likely. They aren't supposed to even ask if you have a family in interviews, you're supposed to bring forth information, it can be different country and state wise of course with labour laws.
Sounds like he's trying to force you out, id contact HR, ethics, your DM, whoever and everyone and get his ass in hot water.

Your sm seems crusty. If youd like an accommodation you can use the partner hub from work or home to file. It will email pcc (partner contact center) your sm and dm. You will only need to correspond over email with your pcc rep. Provide a physicians note and they will advise from there. In my experience I didn’t need accommodations throughout my pregnancy but i was sure to buy extra foam/padded shoes. If theres a task that’s difficult just ask your team to accommodate you in the moment. Most importantly stay hydrated, and i hope you have a boring average pregnancy, a safe delivery and healthy baby!

"Women may generally not be forced to take leave from their jobs as long as they are able to perform the essential tasks of their position.
In addition, it’s generally illegal for companies to require pregnant women, or those suspected of being pregnant, to provide medical documentation that wouldn’t be required for similarly situated non-pregnant employees."
You shouldn’t need an accommodation for this, but it sounds like your SM is just being a jerk about it honestly. Get a note from your dr about what you’re specifically requesting - so let’s say you want to always have 6hr shifts so you’re scheduled a meal but not on the floor too long
I have an accommodation to receive my breaks at evenly spaced intervals throughout my shifts (also pregnant)
You could request to not be scheduled more than 2 days in a row to allow for ample rest time
It just depends on what you need. But they will ask for medical documentation stating the need, then they’ll call you to discuss the specifics and any concerns. Once this accommodation is filed though, it’s legally binding under the ADA (pregnancy counts as a temporary disability)

My coworker was 3 cm dilated running a fucking shift because Starbucks was going to fire her if she didn't and she was in the SCAP program. In my personal experience they're horrible with pregnancy related stuff... please take care of yourself and I hope you have a better experience than my friend did
