slay 💅 our sm wouldn’t let us close early🥰 just kept saying she put in a work order. didn’t even come in and try to fix it! and when i said that i felt lightheaded she told me to just push through my shift (i.redd.it)

ethics and compliance would love to hear about this ❤️
sxmpathetic [OP] 76 points 9m ago
we had our doors open even though we aren’t allowed to and the temperature eventually dropped. but was not a fun experience lol. our ac has been an ongoing issue though so i’ll definitely keep this in mind for next time 🥰
majik_rose 10 points 9m ago
At my store we apparently used to have issues with the ac breaking, they figured out that if you close the blinds in the afternoon it prevents the store from turning into a greenhouse. Basically the sun coming thru the windows was heating up the store and forcing the ac to work overtime, leading to it not keeping up. We close the blinds at like 2 or 3, haven’t had any issues!!
SnooShortcuts8570 3 points 9m ago
What’s the reason behind not leaving the doors open?
PhysiksBoi 2 points 9m ago
Pests can enter too easily and frequently, customers probably won't be comfortable hanging out in the lobby. If you're in an area with mosquitos it could be quite bad during summer.
the_fun_mom 2 points 9m ago
Safety and security risk
sashiyaki 107 points 9m ago
Our store hit 95+ and we still weren’t allowed to close. Were just advised to keep doors and drive-through windows closed as much as possible.
sxmpathetic [OP] 46 points 9m ago
oh yeah keep doors and windows closed. god forbid you get any fresh air when you’re literally sweating to death!
Gh0st_W6lker 99 points 9m ago
Fuck that. Those are unethical working conditions. Report that
bryceofswadia 72 points 9m ago
Not only unethical, illegal. This should be reported to OSHA. Afaik temperatures can’t exceed 80 degrees.
looker009 11 points 9m ago
Please link as i am not aware of any such rule from OSHA.
bryceofswadia 2 points 9m ago
That’s just what my shift told me. It exceeded 80 degrees at my store and we ended up closing down early.
cosmicsnowpea 2 points 9m ago
Our AC was broken for two weeks. I looked into calling OSHA, but unfortunately in the state of Oklahoma there were no rules being broken.
Alefur 1 points 9m ago
Our AC in our store has barely ever worked good to know that while yeah it's a crappy AC and the store is constantly extremely hot I can't do anything about it since it's Oklahoma.
sxmpathetic [OP] 4 points 9m ago
i plan to next time it happens bc the ac is an ongoing issue in our store
HappyJos 80 points 9m ago
I'm tired of "just push through "
sensei_trippz 63 points 9m ago
“hey HappyJos, can you clock in just a little bit early? we’re very swamped and could use the extra hand! 😁😊🤗”

“you guys’ll be alright, i’ll be there at my scheduled time. just push through 🥰🤗😊”
Alefur 8 points 9m ago
Y'all get to clock in early?
Lmao we're constantly swamped all day every day and somehow we're 50hours over labor every week so we have to cut constantly and work a bare bones shift every time
sxmpathetic [OP] 23 points 9m ago
I AM TOO DUDE. we’re a store without a dt but there were only 3 of us on a saturday afternoon and we were slammed my entire shift on top of the heat. i’m sick of pushing through because i know damn well that if my sm was working, we would’ve been properly staffed and the ac would’ve been an actual concern
kaefeen 6 points 9m ago
literally same when my manager is leading a floor or has to open she has so many partners scheduled but there’s only like 4 of us on a Saturday morning in a dt store
CheesiestSlice 60 points 9m ago
I hope you pulled yourself off the floor when you said you felt lightheaded, even though your SM was being awful about it. That shit can be serious, or it can get serious quickly.

I'm sorry this happened to you.
sxmpathetic [OP] 21 points 9m ago
my SM told the shift to give me another 10 and i felt a lot better after eating and drinking some water. definitely sucks that she didn’t care at all but if anything happened to any of us we definitely would not have let that shit go without repercussions
PhysiksBoi 2 points 9m ago
At least you got a breather, but yeah that's still a troubling lack of concern for your employee's wellbeing. In that situation if I was the shift I'd prioritize safety over DT times, you can tell the customers that its 93F inside and they won't make a big deal over the wait.

Handing out breaks when conditions are really bad is really not that big a sacrifice - but hurting the trust of your coworkers and showing that you'd sacrifice their health for a slight edge in profit? That's a cost that might not show up on paper, but is too much.
vietlazed 38 points 9m ago
That is not food safe
MrsOceanGrown 34 points 9m ago
Correct. There’s a lot of product that needs to stay room temperature and people can get sick. Including partners that consume the stuff.
sxmpathetic [OP] 15 points 9m ago
literally wasn’t lmfao the cakepops were melting
MrsClaireUnderwood 6 points 9m ago
Yeah, uh, the food's not what matters here lol
MessatineSnows 30 points 9m ago
yes, the employees are most important. *but* the environment not being food safe *as well as* being hazardous working conditions is now two strikes instead of one
moldyhotpocket 11 points 9m ago
which one will corporate care about more, their products or workers? i think we all know
MrsClaireUnderwood 9 points 9m ago
I have serious doubts corporate cares about their products after the last year and a half of whatever "quality control" has been doing.
lewabwee 0 points 9m ago
If it isn’t food safe it can be hazardous for consumption and customers don’t exactly need to be getting sick either. Both things are relevant.
MrsClaireUnderwood 1 points 9m ago
The danger in these conditions is greater for the employee than the customer.
lewabwee 0 points 9m ago
Two things can be simultaneously relevant even if you disagree with the possibility of them being equally relevant. In fact, an employee can eat or drink something hazardous, get heat stroke and then food poisoning. Things can be nuanced and complicated. I’m shocked, are you?
capsule_of_anxiety1 15 points 9m ago
Contact OSHA, contact ethics and compliance. SM’s need to stop acting like partners are so disposable to the point where they basically are saying, “if you get a heat stroke that would probably suck, but make sure your shifts are covered”.

They need to be held accountable!
sxmpathetic [OP] 5 points 9m ago
my sm was cool until she wasn’t. and this really isn’t fucking cool. i luckily made it through my shift but like… what if i hadn’t?
capsule_of_anxiety1 5 points 9m ago
That’s essentially how they all are. You shouldn’t have been made to work in those conditions, same for your fellow partners. That’s not fair. Your SM wouldn’t wanna work in those conditions.
sxmpathetic [OP] 3 points 9m ago
if my sm was working i’m sure it would’ve been fixed that day
capsule_of_anxiety1 3 points 9m ago
Exactly. They suck
urlessies 14 points 9m ago
report this to ethics!!!
Peace2Theaworld 13 points 9m ago
Pretty sure the temp shouldn't be any higher than 86 or its a violation
ConfusionDisastrous8 8 points 9m ago
It says your system in off. Did you try and turn the fan to the on setting?
sxmpathetic [OP] 7 points 9m ago
yeah nothing we do works. it’s hotter in the cafe than it is outside because our ac just continuously blows out hot air
Lanky_Rip_5414 8 points 9m ago
That’s an OSHA violation. Contact them.
Andeepac79 7 points 9m ago
we had this happen at my work except the heater was broken for 2 weeks! they had portable heaters running, huge safety violation. told us to bring blankets and coats in middle of winter. i’m not at a starbucks it was an office job. for a well to do company, someone called osha. i’ve never seen them move so fast to fix it! it was done within 24 hours of that call.
sxmpathetic [OP] 3 points 9m ago
hmmm…. good to know 😳
idonthinksoannie 6 points 9m ago
SM here that just went thru this twice over the summer. There is no magic number because the measurement of needing to close is dependent on PARTNER CARE. If your partners are feeling overheated you CLOSE. My DM and RD both had my back entirely on it. Go higher if your SM isn't taking care of you.
Toomanyboringpeople 6 points 9m ago
When our air conditioning was broken we finally closed bc customers called to complain that they were making us work in those conditions and said it was an OSHA Violation so if you have any cool regulars have them call or have a friend pretend to be a customer 😂 us Shift managers also fought really hard for it on other days until finally we closed until they could fix it
greenlykethecolor 5 points 9m ago
This is a osha violation if you wanted to report it $1 $1 the lack of empathy from your manager is concerning and can be dangerous
Torirock10 5 points 9m ago
that’s … ummmm 😟
sxmpathetic [OP] 5 points 9m ago
it’s uhhhhh….. 🙁
brookeredacted 4 points 9m ago
I would call ethics and compliance. Unfortunately OSHA only gives a “recommended” temperature for businesses. As long as y’all have access to running water, there’s nothing OSHA can do for you. Ethics and compliance is a better route. Also, remember that you can always refuse work/work conditions that make you feel unsafe, and you have the right to protect yourself and your own health without retaliation. I hope this helps!
whattheactualfckman 4 points 9m ago
that is when Id clock out and say “see you tomorrow :)”
leeblissy 4 points 9m ago
CHRIST ALIVE 😭 we've had similar problems as well (love the US south) and I swear our shit didn't get fixed for months 😭😭 100% talk to ethics and compliance asap, or have a coworker do it if phonecalls don't vibe w you. that is completely unacceptable to have your sm fully disregard their employees health and safety for the sake of bux's bottom line that way.
Necessary_Low939 4 points 9m ago
I can’t stand a hot ass store. I was in one and I lost my temper
sxmpathetic [OP] 1 points 9m ago
lol i definitely almost did
Necessary_Low939 1 points 9m ago
Yeah bro. I can’t
somewheredaydreaming 3 points 9m ago
Please call the help desk to put in a ticket, specific how the temp is within OSHA violation for working temp and that working conditions have become unsafe for you and customers. You have to use those phrases specifically. I wouldn't doubt if you had AC units brought by the end of the week after that.
kaefeen 3 points 9m ago
nah at that point I would’ve left and called osha…like try and fire me ☺️ I will sue!!
Ok_Visit_1968 3 points 9m ago
Fall out go to ER. Workers comp.
Alefur 3 points 9m ago
Literally had a training module pop up that working in overheated temperatures are unsafe and you can refuse to work, your SM told you to work through what sounds like signs of heat stroke? File a report fuck that.
Gameb0i6 3 points 9m ago
I would’ve called OSHA right away.
testingaurora 3 points 9m ago
I would've just fainted to make a point but the floors usually so sticky and dirty ugh, the things we do to fight for our rights. Def make all the calls that's unacceptable
deeciphered 3 points 9m ago
This happened the last day at my old store. It was 97 in our store. We were making fans out of the cup sleeves it was absolutely miserable and we weren't allowed to close.
RaidiationHound 3 points 9m ago
Happened at our store too. It was 95 in the back at 89 in the lobby, but the Manager just said that everyone could drink water on the floor and that we could take extra breaks, my shift was temping milks every thirty minutes and it was so hot the Milk was ONE DEGREE away from having to be Thrown out in the milk fridge
lewabwee 3 points 9m ago
I’ve had partners throw up before because the AC was broken. A broken AC is no joke.
martinifather 3 points 9m ago

Only_Lunch_6020 3 points 9m ago
i could be wrong but my sm always tells us osha has a recommended working environment temperature, but not any rules about it. our store would be 90 sometimes and they’d be like ok that sucks
brokeCarGuy408 2 points 9m ago
78 degrees and up is considered inhumane work conditions. Report it to HR
floofxs2 1 points 9m ago
Our a/c and ice machine broke during heat wave. They didn’t shut down just had SSVs running to the grocery stores and partners taking turns facing death on ovens. Took two weeks for the a/c to get fixed because the whole main system died. Luckily the ice machine got fixed faster.
Dry_Kale5721 1 points 9m ago
Our air was out for almost 2 weeks the heat was on. An I will say they don’t care at all we sweated so bad it was horrible!!
darkwolf523 1 points 9m ago
