I want to come out to my store(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by monsterhuntergen
I'm a trans man. I'm unable to start transitioning because of my living situation, so small things like pronouns are some of my only sources of comfort when it comes to my gender.
I want to come out to my store, as a lot, if not most of my coworkers are lgbt themselves or allies. The problem is that I have a very hard time talking about this, verbally at least. If I came out to my manager, could I ask him to pass it around to the rest of the store? Or am I expected to do it myself? What should I do?

I am proud of you for being ready to take the next step <3 it ain't easy!
sbux is committed to making every partner feel seen and heard. at least that's something I promote within my store, and my SM is on top of that. we live in a world where so many people don't conform, that's the beauty of non-conforming coming together.
take it at your pace. once you're out, you're out. that's all. it's all about moving forward. you don't have to act, talk, or dress different, you act/talk/dress however you feel any given day.
from a stranger POV, I support you and I believe your store will too. there is no shame in this game. sending good vibes your way to live your best life! you've got this <3
(as for the "passing around the store" comment- my suggestion would be to change your pronouns on the POS. that way when you give your partner #s, it will include your preferred pronouns. if the partner on register catches it, they may just confirm with you that those are your pronouns- nothing more, nothing less!)

It’s something small but if your store offers pronoun pins, use them! Same thing if you have a preferred name for your name tag. I’m gender-fluid, as are some of my other coworkers, and we all fluctuate between pins & what identity feels right per day! There is no shame and I understand it can be scary, but Starbucks has the most accepting coworkers IMO!

The best thing your store manager can do is role model for others. If you feel safest coming out to your manager, ask them to use your preferred pronouns going forward, and to role model it. They can also reassign inclusivity training modules to the team... sometimes we do these learning modules but don't know where it applies in our lives/situations. Reassigning those trainings at a time when it is particularly meaningful to your team is a good idea. Get your pronoun pins, your store should have some available! Finally, if you don't want to come out to your family yet, relay that information to your manager and fellow partners, so they don't accidentally out you to your family, should they come visit the store or something.
Sending you a blanket of love! You got this!

Sounds tacky, but try talking about it to yourself in the mirror. Do so verbally and frequently enough that you don't feel so many hairs rising on the back of your neck.

cis partner here, but I would suggest maybe starting with one barista or shift you are comfortable with to feel supported while you decide what to do. Unfortunately, your manager will likely tell you they can’t do that- it’s an invasion of your privacy and I would think they wouldn’t be allowed to spread that kind of info about you, even with your permission. But you can definitely ask for their support! They can definitely give you that.
Good luck man and happy coming out!!! I know that’s a hard journey for many people but you’re doing great 👍🏻

Your SM can absolutely share this information if asked to do so. My store has a phone list on the wall that also includes everyone's hire date, birthday, and pronouns. it helps with trans and nonbinary partners, and we get to celebrate each other's milestones together.

Aww, thats great! I honestly wasn’t sure, I’ve worked at jobs where corporate forbids we talk about personal things like that for fear of a lawsuit or problems and would just tell employees to deal with it themselves. It’s good to know that SMs can help like that.
