Just had a customer yell at me for NOT kicking them out (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by canadianhorror
We’ve been slammed all day since we opened, non stop out the door lineup. So, with the consent of my manager, I closed the cafe down for last two hours of the night, so we might have a chance to properly do our closing tasks. We had one man sitting in our cafe doing some paperwork or whatever. I, a decent human being, let him know that I’m not asking him to leave, but that our cafe is closed so when he is wanting to head out, someone will unlock the door for me.
This mother fucker flies off on a rant about my generation, which one he thought I was from I don’t know, and how we can just leave and go home if we don’t feel like doing any real work. He claims I AM kicking him out, to which I assure him I am not. He is welcome to stay until our usual closing hour. But no, I’ve soiled his experience and interrupted some “very important work”. Okay dude. You’ve got like 5 years left at best if this is how you act day to day. NOW I’m asking you to leave. Get bent lol.

It's illegal to lock the doors while customer are inside. Remember doors must remain unlocked during normal business hours which means if you close early all customers need to leave. It has to do with fire code.

I wonder if this rule is dependent on area, because where I live, restaurants and grocery stores lock the doors all the time if you're there near close, and they just let you know so when you're ready to leave they'll let you out.

In US it's nation wide. It's as result of fires where workers got caught being unable to get out and dying. Those business are risking getting fine if fire marshal catches them. Look up The Triangle Waist Company Fire of 1911.

Ah, I'm not in the US so I suppose it might not be the same rules as there. That does makes sense though.

That’s what crash bars are for, every store should have crash bars on their doors.

That’s news to me, since every Starbucks I’ve ever worked at does it all the time. I’m sure the fire Marshall wouldn’t be thrilled though

Judging by you're username, I'm assuming you're in Canada too, so I wonder if that law isn't in place here.

Most if not all stores have a second/side door that can be opened from the inside only. If it and the fire escape remain accessible, then you do have the 2 required fire escape

That is store dependent. My old store both doors get locked with a key and didn't have door crash bar.

I am actually a little surprised since it usually is a fire code issue, but that does vary state by state and county by county.

Why are old folks so miserable. Like just be glad you’re not hooked up to machines in a nursing home and stfu.

Because their generation has ruined the world and it’s easier to lash out at the youngs than live with it.

You’re kinder than I am. I tell people it’s a security issue and they have to leave lol
