Does anyone have any advice please :( (self.starbucksbaristas)

I have worked for Starbucks as a barista for a little over 2 years, and have worked at 2 different locations. I currently work at a store on a college campus and it’s very busy at all times. Usually, I thrive in the chaos and love to make drinks and work when it’s busy. However, for the last 2-3 months my store has gone severely downhill. No health codes are being followed, it’s beyond infested with flies and gnats, and there is even black mold growing in our ice bin. No standards are being followed and right now I am sick and I’m almost positive I’ve caught it from work from either the excessive amounts of mold or flies or BOTH. I was the last person to clean the drains 3 weeks ago (without anyone asking me, no one was paying attention to them at all) and I was the last. Another partner and I are at our wits end and physically can’t be in the store anymore due to the cleanliness. Her and I could clean it, but we can’t do it every day. Shifts pay no attention nor do they care about the cleaning standards. My SM doesn’t even know how to make a drink or work any station on the floor at all whatsoever. Who can I go to or what can I do? I’ve been written up even after having doctors notes( I never signed them and Im in the process of appealing ). Next week I’ve been scheduled 9 hours total when I’m a full time employee. Hours are severely cut, everyone has given up, the place is rotting from the inside out. I feel like I’ve done everything in my power as a barista to help but it’s beyond me and I absolutely cannot survive anymore. I would like to continue to work for Starbucks, I don’t want to quit which is why I’m not sure how to proceed from here :/

Honestly if at all possible, I’d just transfer at that point. If the whole ship is sinking, there’s no way one or even two of you can save it. You can try to anonymously contact your local health department, directly contact your DM, or call ethics and compliance. Best of luck, that sounds incredibly frustrating.

Thank you so much for your reply, I contacted SM today about a transfer. Do I have to do it through him? Or can I go higher up to get my transfer. I’m afraid because I’ve spoken out a bit about the horrid conditions that he will fire me instead of transfer

You will have to work with your SM for a transfer. I’d start job shopping on the careers section to see which stores in your area are actively hiring if you don’t have a store picked out already.

As for the firing, it may be difficult unless you have current documented write ups. As unfortunate as this sounds, hopefully he sees it more like getting rid of someone who wants to hold him accountable.

I’ve been written up twice for 2 trips to the doctor in which I provided notes to him. Which is why I worry he may fire me, we have a brand new store opening up near us in December which I’m trying to move to. They are taking 5 people from our store to work there so I’m really hoping that he will let me without a hassle. I want to get the word out to anyone I can about this store so that I know how to prevent this shit from happening in the future even though I’m just a barista. Thank you so much for your comment I really appreciate you taking the time to respond

Contact ethics and compliance NOW - once a report is made then you can get your manager for retaliation. Without a report, it’s technically not “retaliating”

you should get into contact with the DM. you guys should have scheduled clean play after store close to get deep cleaning done and everyday cleaning needs to be a shared responsibility with EVERYONE. the DM needs to know this is going on and hopefully you can work with them and knock some sense into your SM so there can be an overhaul on how cleaning gets done. if this doesn’t work out, put in a transfer and call the health department. you can report your store anonymously and never look back.

Yes we have clean plays every Tuesday but the same people do them pretty much and it’s definitely not getting done correctly. I am gonna try to transfer but I also need to give justice to my fellow veterans that are stuck there and get the health department in there. It’s so awful I’ve never seen a Starbucks at this low of a standard
