Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and live in Iowa. I went to school for engineering and due to health reasons, my current engineering job is too demanding. Also my health inssurance is absolutely horrid and will not approve my Mayo clinic visit despite getting a referral from an internal medicine doctor at University of Iowa. Just wondering if anyone had experience with visiting Mayo while employed with starbucks and how did that go? How good is the health insurance? I am thinking about switching to a starbucks barista job as I need a company that looks out for my health.

Do you mind expanding a little bit on how specifically your engineering job is too much? Working in food service is a lot more physically intensive than most people think- you’re on your feet for 2-3 hours at a time, constantly bending and lifting things like large bags of coffee or gallons of milk, and it’s a pretty fast pace. As someone who has a physical disability that flares up more when I work here more, I would not recommend it for someone in a similar boat.

I was gonna say this. We have someone with a physical disability/health issues as well who only does oven. Even then, it can be so much for them that they need to take frequent breaks, go home, or call out from being in so much pain.

Yeah, it’s brutal. Starbucks health insurance is also not somehow uniquely good or affordable, and you aren’t eligible for three months, and so I don’t think it would necessarily be as helpful of a move as the OP is thinking.
