i’m sure a lot of you here have experienced the same problem i’m having atm, if not similar.

my store manager pretty much refuses to promote me.

i’m a barista at a high volume store. i’m a mid/closer. i’ve been w the company for over a year now, i showed interest in becoming a ssv pretty much since i started, given that it was an option. as i grew more comfortable being a barista, crafting drinks, learning the store, closing the store etc— i thought about becoming a shift, so i mentioned it to my store manager and other shifts. my shifts and other baristas told me i could totally do it, they think i would be a good shift. a great one even. when i brought it to my store manager, they were intrigued and seemed excited for me to want to move up. they told me i had to become a barista trainer before i was able to promote, so i asked what to work on… that was 6 months ago.

i mention it any time i come into a conversation with my store manager, and since then they have just shrugged it off and i feel as if acts like they don’t care/ don’t want to bother promoting me. i am good at my job and i know it. i’ve been told that i need to work on my craft as a barista before i can promote, even though being a shift have nothing to do with being a barista.

i’m a strong partner at the store, coaching partners every chance i get to make the store stronger. but store manager never sees it. i’m thinking about transferring stores somewhere where i would be able to grow. thoughts?

it could have nothing to do with you. kinda sounds like your manager doesn’t want to let you down but can’t promote you themselves right now. when i was looking into promoting i only had the chance once there was an opening at my store. they can’t really create a position for you if that isn’t what the store needs yknow. if you see openings at other stores, i’m sure your manager would encourage you to apply. it sucks but sometimes you have to transfer out to promote if it isn’t looking like you’ll have an opening at your store. not sure why they wouldn’t do barista trainer for you though, do you have a few of them at your store currently?

I need to look into this, I don’t know if it’s corporate wide. There are 2 stores in my town and the managers stated to the shifts they are no longer promoting within and if someone wants to become a shift they have to transfer locations. It’s possible that’s a similar thing happening. They told us it’s corporate because of too many conflict of interest issues with baristas promoting who are friends with their coworkers. I don’t feel like my store has had problems but the other location has.

Oh no… god forbid coworkers are friends.

That’s silly, they’ll just become friends with the staff at the new store.

What is more likely is that they want to shuffle around staff as much as they can as a union busting strategy.

That would make a lot of sense. We had a shift meeting recently and the manager of the other store mentioned how it’s a problem that we’re all friends with one another. I couldn’t imagine being in a store where everyone doesn’t like each other and how that’s a better work environment than what we have.

It’s a problem because it’s makes you stronger as a group, so if someone suggests unionizing, you all work together and make it happen.

The siren has already been shuffling around staff to weaken organizing.

Yeah I mean definitely apply if a shift position opens up at a nearby store.

With career progression over a year ago, just promoting people shouldn’t be a thing anywhere anymore (although we all know it happens somewhere). Moving from barista to SSV is supposed to be only through the interview process and you do not need your SMS permission to apply to any open SSV position.

If you haven’t had management position before, you have to become a barista trainer.
Baby steps…. work on being a trainer first & then wait out the 6 months then apply for SSV.
