Could I get away with not having uniform bottoms until my first pay cheque? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rebeqa21
I was recently hired and have yet to start working. None of the bottoms I already have fit the dress code. I have things to fit the colour guidelines, but they're things deemed not allowed. All of my jeans are ripped, and I also have a lot of black leggings and yoga pants (aka flare leggings). I don't want to have to use my credit card to buy anything until I pay my remaining balance. So could I get away with it for my first two weeks?

Edit: I think it's worth noting that I need to be matched with a store. So I haven't met any of my managers/shift supervisors yet and that it's in Canada

Edit Pt. 2: I ended up buying a pair of work pants that I actually like quite a bit on sale. Thank you so much for your suggestions!

Your SM might make a temporary exception, but they might not. I would have a conversation with them once you’re told what store you’ll be working at, but be prepared to have to buy some stuff. Especially if it’ll just be for work, you’ll most likely be able to find stuff pretty easily at a thrift store or Walmart

thank you for your advice! i’m midsized (but usually plus sized for bottoms) so the thrift store is probably not an option. if need be, i’ll probably end up splurging on at least one decent pair that i really like (and will wear outside of work). i can pay my cc after my cheque after all and if they don’t make an exception i need the pants. what can you do 🤷🏻‍♀️

if you have any cash at all or could borrow some from family/a friend you can get pants at the thrift store. if not, explain to your SM the situation and they may be able to figure something out for you.

i have some cash but probably not enough for a pair i’d like. sadly, im midsized (usually wear us sized bottoms) so the thrift store is most likely not an option for me. if need be, i’ll probably end up splurging on at least one decent pair that i really like (and will wear outside of work). i can pay my cc after my cheque after all and if they don’t make an exception. i need the pants, what can be done 🤷🏻‍♀️

i don’t know where you’re at but in the US there’s pretty decent plus sized options at the thrift, but i can’t speak to other countries.

Do you have any dresses? One of my favorite dress code loopholes is wearing my preferred black leggings under a dress. I don't believe that dresses need to be in the palette anymore, just a solid color, though the wording about dresses is kinda ambiguous. If you do go the pants route, Walmart has jeggings up through a 4X or a 5X that are only around $15-17, at least in the US, and they hold up pretty well.

i do! but they’re all strappy sundresses or patterned. i could get away with layering a sweater on top to make it kinda like a skirt. however i have one dress that fits, so i’d be wearing it almost daily for two weeks but i might need to do that.

you’re allowed to wear jeggings in the dress code but not leggings. you can buy jeggings at walmart 👍
rebeqa21 [OP] 1 points 9m ago
thanks for the suggestion! the cost of jeggings at walmart (or other store in canada) are relatively close to other pants. with maybe only a $10-$15 price difference. although i’m pressed for cash rn the splurge is worth it, since i’ll probably never wear jeggings other than the brief period between when i start and my first shift

they’re like $15 max they’re pre-packaged and pre-folded usually hanging on a wall

If your leggings are thin, wear them under the ripped jeans until you can get a pair of work pants
rebeqa21 [OP] 2 points 9m ago
I now have a pair of work pants just to last a couple weeks, but you’re a genius. Thank you!! I have a couple pairs of thin leggings that I keep to wear under my jeans in the winter.

you can wear ripped jeans if the apron covers them how would they know
dazedandconfusedhere 1 points 9m ago
This isn’t a good idea because when you take off your apron for breaks or trash they’ll know

I did end up buying something on sale to use for a couple weeks. This is worth thinking about/mentioning to my SM just so I may be able to have a few options for which pants to wear though. I wouldn’t try to hide it though.

If you're in the US and have a Goodwill near you you can find some good cheap pants. May not be exactly your style, but they'll work till your check.

Thank you for the suggestion! I did find a pair on sale (that actually happen to be my style). I’m in Canada. However many Goodwill’s in my city have closed. It’s tough trying to thrift here, especially when you’re looking for larger clothes (Size 18-20 for bottoms).
