lactose intolerant partners (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by BatWeary
anyone else have coworkers who are lactose intolerant and spend 85% of their shift in the bathroom?? because i have 2 like that and it pisses me off. i get your stomach can’t handle lactose, and that some of y’all are willing to risk it all for a grilled cheese but for the love of the siren herself stop eating the grilled cheese and immediately washing it down with a venti white mocha made with 2% and extra sweet cream foam.

they’re good workers but all they consume is cheese and milk. i get those are their favorite things but it’s really fucking annoying when they’re stuck in the bathroom for 45 minutes (especially during peak!!!) because the grilled cheese fucked up their stomach. one of my coworkers has quite literally shit himself at work on more than one occasion because he REFUSES to use nondairy in his drinks (he likes the alt milks, but likes regular milk more) & both bathrooms were taken up. we’ve had to air out the cafe after they were done before because customers were getting nauseous from the smell.

risk it all you want at home or elsewhere, NOT at work where you know it’s going to effect everyone else.
yungfroggie 227 points 9m ago
im sorry he SHIT HIMSELF AT WORK????
BatWeary [OP] 98 points 9m ago
YES. i wasn’t there but he was waiting outside the bathroom & apparently he couldn’t wait any longer 😭
imathrowayslc 20 points 9m ago
And he was sent home? Also if they are not able to be on the floor for at least 90% of their shift (that gives a whopping 36 minutes for bathroom time on a six hour shift) then send their ass home. If they aren’t healthy enough to be on the floor they need to take some sick time. That’s why we have it.

I’m normally 100% bathroom breaks are legit and you need to take them outside your scheduled breaks, but intentionally triggering them when you know better? Hell no.

💀
Responsible_Snow7109 20 points 9m ago
Lmao 😂 i died at the sheer urgency and shock of this question
BovineCurds 12 points 9m ago
On More than one occasion lmao im sorry but if i shit myself at work i would not return
perfectsizzle 1 points 9m ago
We’ve all been there
ranchonmytetas 208 points 9m ago
there’s literally anti gas pills and lactose intolerant pills that can help them tremendously, i def would say recommend some to them. they’ve helped me through A LOT
BatWeary [OP] 88 points 9m ago
they’re aware they exist…they just happen to “forget” them every time
ranchonmytetas 40 points 9m ago
that’s honestly so annoying idk how i would handle that situation tbh if i was their boss 😭
aee78 19 points 9m ago
My store would buy some with the pcard. Cause that's BS.
Urmomscoochiehairs 1 points 9m ago
Buy a bottle and keep it in the back room
Urmomscoochiehairs 1 points 9m ago
No fr saves me everytime
rtsneedshelp 117 points 9m ago
BRO WHAT
rtsneedshelp 151 points 9m ago
This is so beyond unacceptable lmao if you have a medical condition… don’t fucking intentionally trigger it at work???????????? Especially in a way that is SO BEYOND BREAKING HEALTH CODES???? Either bring food from home and switch to non dairy or wait til after your shift what the fuck
BatWeary [OP] 57 points 9m ago
EXACTLYYY ! like i would understand if their drink was made with the wrong milk on accident but it’s everyday. they order it that way :/
sourfuk 101 points 9m ago
as a lactose intolerant person idk why someone would make themselves do this EVERYDAY AT WORK. pls you have access to non-diary options, it's not that bad. also, you can take pills if you really want to eat cheese-y stuff.
elinor435 61 points 9m ago
okay at first i was like that’s unreasonable but after reading the whole thing… yes very reasonable
nicolelynnejones 57 points 9m ago
I get paranoid about being in the bathroom too long for my legitimate IBS that I do everything in my power to keep under control. Why are they purposely doing this to themselves?? LACTAID EXISTS
Deep_Mission_4998 11 points 9m ago
Literally same??? I always get non dairy milks bc I don’t even want to risk not feeling good or having to be stuck in the bathroom. I don’t even eat at work or even before some days, bc I don’t want to trigger my stomach. it has bad repercussions for your health to continuously inflame your digestive tract for the sake of cheese and milk.
spookyboi13 8 points 9m ago
yeah... i can tolerate cheese a little bit better than milk, so ill drink nondairy all fucking day so i can actually eat something midway decent while working. (and i've identified the foods that irritate me the least too)

i also have severe gastrointestinal issues, so it's imperative that i don't trigger anything, especially if i got work.

shit happens (literally) like i learned i cant tolerate coconut milk and peach juice. but then its on me to be careful to avoid those, especially while working.
nmartin190 27 points 9m ago
Omg how is this real 🫣 I have pretty bad tummy issues (non lactose related), and I’m always paranoid that it’s going to be an issue at work… I can’t imagine knowing you can prevent it and just not doing it?!!! Wtf
Ajskdjurj 3 points 9m ago
I was taking medicine that caused stomach issues and I had to get a doctors note because it would hit me at random times.
mewwissa 26 points 9m ago
At that point I’d take the store card to buy some Lactaid pills, write it on the log and everything. That way it’s the manager and DM’s problem.
AlexanderAJ3 20 points 9m ago
Me with ibs and trying so hard to not have to shit more than twice a shift. Never in the bathroom long but my coworkers call me squirrel bladder bc they think I’m just needing to piss a lot lmfao. I try to find “dead moments” where I can run and not disrupt things
lilmissambersue 3 points 9m ago
My coworkers have gotten to the point where before they take their break they look at me and say "do you need to use the bathroom first?" Lolololol
It's nice they think about me and my tiny bladder hahaha
MentalHealthSucksAss 15 points 9m ago
I was allowed to keep lactose free milk in the partner bin. I made my lattes from that, no problem.

We do have 3 partners with ibs which I can understand, but when you’re doing it to yourself… I agree, risk it on your own time.
computernoobe 14 points 9m ago
Lmfao as a lactose intolerant person I cannot. This was so funny to read. Shit himself in the cafe rofl. When I worked at the bucks I drank oatmilk with everything. Oatly tastes damn good. Your coworkers are crazy..
shanswen 14 points 9m ago
i have a coworker that has a shitting “schedule” and he will literally shit for 30 minutes right before taking a lunch. Like there’s no way it takes THAT LONG
canidieyet_ 5 points 9m ago
it absolutely does for some people 😭 my brother will literally be in the bathroom for 30+ minutes multiple times a day. he leaves his phone wherever unless he’s in public, so it’s not that he’s using his phone in there. he doesn’t think he has ibs but like bruh
vegan-trash 14 points 9m ago
At this point they need documentation or an accommodation. It’s something that is reoccurring and honestly avoidable but something they have to be given the burden to deal with. We are dealing with a partner who is in the bathroom too often but not to the point of shitting themselves yet lol. And for reference. I have a health issue and take medication that makes me have to pee a lot. Like a lot a lot. And sometimes I have to go during peak so I got an accommodation because I did t want to burden the staff
iCeleste 11 points 9m ago
We have 2 or 3 partners at my work that take 20+ minute bathroom breaks, but I don't think it's because of milk. I'm pretty sure they just want a break lmao
iwantyourpoison 11 points 9m ago
fav post
testingaurora 10 points 9m ago
There are so so many non-dairy and vegan options now, that's ridiculous. Sounds like this person may need therapy too if they aren't able to control themselves or make choices that aren't gonna turn themselves inside out at work. I'm so sorry you're dealing with these circumstances that's so frustrating
Praxlyn 9 points 9m ago
i take pills for mine, so i will GLADLY wolf down that grilled cheese while still being considerate
shipssiren 9 points 9m ago
WE HAVE SOMEONE LIKE THIS

Never shat themselves, but will eat things that upsets their stomach and make constant bathroom trips.

Once texted me BEFORE i even got to work If I could cover their shift, while they were driving TO work because they're stomach hurt. Was cracking jokes about how they "started their morning on the toilet" didn't look in any pain, and loudly said something depended all on me staying late for them to 3.

I say fine, thinking she'll be leaving at one. Nope, got someone to stay longer and left at 10:15, which was like a littke over an hour of work then put in sick time for the rest of their shift :/
Chondodo 6 points 9m ago
Tell them to look at super pro biotic 100 IU pills.
mrbubblegxm 5 points 9m ago
No I’ve known a partner once who LITERALLY HAD DAIRY. Just so he could go home early cause he had stomach issues because it was busy that day. He said it was an “accident” bro I SAW you pour that whole milk into that grande cup w mocha. Shut Up 💀💀
vhoneyv 2 points 9m ago
OMFG SAME. Ordered a grilled cheese then sat in the back complaining about a stomach ache and then went home. Literally the day before that his chai was made with regular milk and he ran to the back saying he was lactose intolerant and needed his lactaid 🫥
different_as_can_be 5 points 9m ago
oh man ya know. i also risked it all to eat rhat grilled cheese, but ONLY if i had a minimal amount of time left in my shift or i’d bring it home. shit on company time to an extent folks.
clouds183 4 points 9m ago
yall send them home, right? because its against health code and the covid check if you have diarrhea.
BatWeary [OP] 3 points 9m ago
yep

Ok-Bowl4392 3 points 9m ago
I have IBS and GERD my doctor recommended not using the toilet for more then 20 minutes at a time as it can cause many issues! Anyways though if a partner is literally shitting themselves while in the store more than once the DM should probably be told. That’s just not ok.
goofygoobered 3 points 9m ago
omg don’t get me started. we had a partner who opened up about having IBS. she told me that she shouldn’t have dairy, etc. but on her 7am break she would always buy a yogurt, cheese stick, cake pop etc (for breakfast)

she’d act surprised when she was vomiting 30 minutes later and said she had to go home… i do not miss working with her lmao
oftbkk 3 points 9m ago
WHAT i’m beyond confused. the grilled cheese upsets my stomach every now and then so if i want one i cook it and bring it home lmao?? not doing that at work?
gothlene -5 points 9m ago
all the question marks make this hard to understand 😭
oftbkk 0 points 9m ago
bc it’s a question
gothlene 0 points 9m ago
that entire thing is a statement i don't see a single question
majik_rose 3 points 9m ago
That’s fucking ridiculous, the alt milk it’s not that bad Jesus
Unknownperson39 1 points 9m ago
I literally love the oat milk 😩
neilgreenbreen 3 points 9m ago
This is so fucked up
Longjumping_Future63 2 points 9m ago
At that point its a self hygeine concern you could look into that.
Urmomscoochiehairs 1 points 9m ago
HOMIE WHAT THE FUCK I HAVE IBS AND EVERYTHING DOES THIS TO ME BUT LITERALLY YOU HAVE TO WORK AROUND IT!! I find it more awkward to ask and then be gone for 15 mins 😩😮‍💨
icedoatmilkchai 1 points 9m ago
gotta be honest… as a partner with IBS aaaaand im on a birth control with a diuretic in it (makes you have to pee a lot) i can totally understand your frustration, however i would be as kind to them as possible. i know from my personal experiences that sometimes even when i havent had anything to eat or drink i still get huge flare ups (and i know lactose and ibs are different but i still relate to spending too much time in the bathroom) i feel a lot of guilt around spending too much time off the floor and worry that i’m being a burden to my partners.

luckily, mostly everyone in my store has been really kind to me and i’m so appreciative of it, but i still get really insecure about it. one time i even cried about it in the back because i felt so bad for leaving everyone during peak. i say all this to say that they may feel bad (or they may not) but for those of us with stomach issues, we really do appreciate the understanding people, and it honestly makes my day.

ps i do think he should watch what he eats though, sometimes if i really want a grilled cheese but i know its gonna have bad consequences i’ll wait until im off to get one. he should def do the same, but thats just my opinion lol
taebunz 1 points 9m ago
As someone who is lactose intolerant and worked at sbux, I truly do not understand the need of messing up your stomach at work for fun. I love dairy but I would just use alternative milks and not eat foods with cheese. Are they not embarassed, do they have no shame lol. I couldn't imagine coming into work everyday and having a shitty ass and gassing the entire store up constantly. I would have to quit out of shame
espressojunkie 1 points 9m ago
I take pills but also do non dairy milk (usually oat) and the only time I eat the grilled cheese is after hours
lilmissambersue 1 points 9m ago
Omg....this pisses me off so much for you. I am not only lactose intolerant and vegan but gluten intolerant as well so I can't eat anything we serve. Would I love to eat a fucking grilled cheese and a pumpkin spice?! Yes!!!!! But it will kill me. Why do people insist on eating things that make you sick!? Don't eat it at work at least!
(I had gluten on my birthday and the next day I was off and spent most of the morning in the bathroom lol)
AbusedCho 1 points 9m ago
I'm extremely lactose intolerant and all of the partners know. Anytime someone orders a non-dairy beverage I let them know if any of the drink components contain dairy. I am terrified to eat/drink something with a drop of lactose, I cannot imagine partners willingly put themselves through hell for the sake of a grilled cheese. Bruh.
Amazejin 1 points 9m ago
ngl this pisses me off so bad because i have a lot of chronic issues (IBS being one of them) and i KNOW anything can trigger it, so i just tend not to eat at work or eat a small amount just to hold myself over. and ABSOLUTELY no dairy or anything like that!! i couldn’t imagine intentionally eating trigger foods and then being in the bathroom that long during a peak. jfc.
acnh1222 1 points 9m ago
I’m not lactose intolerant (but multiple people in my family have developed it later in life and I fear the possible day it happens to me) but at Starbucks they have access to nondairy options for FREE and they still choose not to? Like I would slightly understand one thing if we had to pay for our drinks on the floor or if we didn’t have nondairy options and they didn’t want to pay but actively choosing for that to happen to them is absolutely wild
biggyswagg 1 points 9m ago
i mean like i get if it take a little longer but 45 minutes 😭😭
sidebirb 1 points 9m ago
bro…
cookiemonstah87 1 points 9m ago
Not lactose intolerant, but had occasional uh... *issues* after too much dairy (seems to be the fat content for me) during a shift. Seemed to be worst with hot drinks for some reason.

I think about once a month I'd end up in the bathroom within 30 minutes of finishing my first drink. And I always felt like such a horrible person if I took more than 5 minutes. 85% of a shift??? Wtf???
-Zispy 1 points 9m ago
Lmao this is actually quite comical at how stupid this is
Ajskdjurj 1 points 9m ago
I’m lactose intolerant nothing crazy I literally just use 1 pump white mocha and almond milk. I know know my limits I just get gassy if I don’t push it to much.

LOL I fixed my lactose problem drinking soy...although there were articles about soy and estrogen so it might be a reason one of my regulars thought I was part of the alphabet mafia for 5 years
Torirock10 -20 points 9m ago
shit on da clock and Ummm don’t ride the sirens cock 🤪 lmao
OakTreeTrash 18 points 9m ago
I mean fucking over your coworkers because you want dairy on your break doesn’t screw with the company. It makes your coworkers have extra work.
Torirock10 1 points 9m ago
yeah tbh i should’ve read the post first cuz i didn’t realize they were SHITTING THEIR PANTS 😭
neilgreenbreen 15 points 9m ago
“Shit on the clock” doesn’t include in your pants
