calling out sick (self.starbucksbaristas)

are we responsible for finding coverage when calling out sick? my store had 3 callouts today and my manager and shifts were saying that the people who called out sick had to find their own coverage or else they would be written up. aren’t the managers responsible once someone calls out? can anyone reply with a link stating the policy on this?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions on this sub. I’m sure if you do a quick search you will find a thread with a link

They are bluffing, they can't write you up for not getting coverage on a call out for sickness. It doesn't violate any guidelines or policies so if they try and give you a write up on your record, escalate it.

Technically it’s the SSVs job to find coverage.

But it helps a lot if you try and help us. Not expected, but always thankful for it.

I don’t have a link but the partner guide (which you can find on the hub) clearly states that if you’re sick it’s not your responsibility to find coverage

Nope. As long as you have sick time, you’re protected. It would help a lot if you helped find coverage though.

what if you don’t have sick time though?

I believe in that case, then it would be your responsibility. But I may be reading the policy wrong

That is a good question. I’ve had several managers tell me once you’ve run out of sick time you are subject to discipline or possibly termination. I believe as mentioned above, after you’ve run out of sick time and once it starts to become a pattern, then the manager can write you up and terminate you.

The way it was explained to me is it only becomes an issue when its a pattern. If some of those 3 people are regularly calling out it may be a conversation when they return, and in turn, "reliability" may be factored in when schedules are made. In the day to day though, I wouldnt stress. Its helpful to reach out for someone to cover but not mandatory. Youre not working, why are you doing work in finding someone to come in.

Also Im an SSV, so thats my perspective.
