This is a vent. So I’m a ssv at my store and I was on the break in the back(With no headset). When I came back onto the floor I over heard the tail end of my DTO partner taking an order. He seemed to be a little confused about something the lady was saying but another partner went over to help out and I thought things were sorted. Well I went to put a headset on and help with food when the lady(still at the box) asks if what she order was a “hot chocolate with the pumpkin powder.” Seeing as my DTO partner was dealing with someone at the window, I hopped on the speaker to help her out. I said yes what you order was the hot chocolate with the pumpkin topping but she said that she wanted a “hot chocolate but with the pumpkin” So I asked her if what she wanted was a pumpkin steamer. She said “No I want a pumpkin hot chocolate” I then asked her if she wanted the drink made like the PSL but without the espresso and again she said no. This went on with my asking different clarifying questions until she just drove off! What do y’all think she was trying to order? I asked questions about wether she wanted mocha or pumpkin or both. She said she didn’t want coffee but she wanted it how it “normally came” so I don’t know 😩. The car behind her even came up to the window after she left and was asking about what the lady wanted.
Edit: Just to clarify after getting some comments about it. I did ask her if she wanted the hot chocolate with pumpkin sauce added to it. I even asked her if she wanted “chocolate” and pumpkin together but she said no to both.

Yeah, like the other comment the thing that immediately comes to my mind is just a hot chocolate add pumpkin sauce 🤷♀️ it’s no different if they asked for a peppermint hot chocolate or a white hot chocolate or a toffee nut hot chocolate, ya just add the syrup/sauce to the drink and ask questions like “yeah so that gets 4 pumps of our mocha sauce and 4 additional pumps of pumpkin, do you wanna make it 2 and 2 because a grande size usually gets four total or keep it at 8?“

It would be a hot chocolate along with pumpkin sauce in there lol idk pumpkin hot chocolate doesnt sound confusing to me. Although it is not an actual menu item name, its not too bad to decipher in my opinion lol she could have just said hot chocolate and add pumpkin sauce or something like that but she may have been trying to shorten it as to not confuse anyone so thats probably why she used the name "pumpkin hot chocolate" lol
Edit to add: u said u asked if she wanted mocha or pumpkin or both and she said "no i dont want coffee, just how it normally comes" then at that point i would know that she assumes mocha means coffee and i would be like ohh ok so u want the chocolate and pumpkin. Because some people really do think mocha means coffee or caffeine
Ordinary-Theory-82892 points9m ago
Well tbf mocha does imply the presence of coffee
Responsible_Snow71092 points9m ago
Yea but not at every place that sells drinks and such. Like with starbucks, mocha refers to the chocolate sauce that we have. But like in my comment above I had said that some people think that mocha specifically stands for caffeine or espresso or coffee or something like that.
Vegan_Sweetie1 points9m ago
In the computer it’s called “mocha sauce” but it doesn’t factually become mocha until coffee is added
Ordinary-Theory-82890 points9m ago
Because that’s what mocha is. We use mocha sauce to make our mochas which are chocolate coffee
Vegan_Sweetie1 points9m ago
…Mocha *does* mean coffee and chocolate together…
Pickle-Chunk12 points9m ago
How is that confusing? She wants a hot chocolate with pumpkin.
durqandat10 points9m ago
Another vote for “this is not confusing”
bitternpc8 points9m ago
Everybody’s saying it’s not confusing but others are also describing different drinks (mocha + pumpkin or mocha sub pumpkin). If I’m confused about an order I’ll ask the customer questions too, even if it sounds simple. Yesterday we had two iced cappuccinos (not Frappuccinos) and a lemonade refresher (no fruit). We get a lot of pumpkin chais and I always ask about the pumpkin to chai ratio, and sometimes get the “just how they usually do it”. People don’t always know they’re ordering an off menu item 😭

sometimes when customers start getting upset by us asking clarifying questions I literally say “I just want to make sure we make you what you want!” and normally then they mellow out and realize “oh yeah they can’t read my mind”
Brgnbo3 points9m ago
Honestly it doesn’t get confusing until you start asking questions to the customer lol sometimes I feel like my first instinct is the right drink but as soon as I ask about the amount of pumps they want or try to clarify, it just confuses the customer more bc they have no idea what I’m talking about.
Coffee-Bae3 points9m ago
Istg she saw something on Facebook or somthing
electricblackjack2 points9m ago
Honestly, you asked clarifying questions and she said no to both.
Then at that point you can't help her because we don't have a pumpkin hot chocolate on the menu
.
kaefeen2 points9m ago
all she had to say was a pumpkin hot chocolate without the chocolate and no coffee lmao customers get so frustrated and impatient and just end up making us more confused but at least you tried to clarify 😂
xmorsxmordre2 points9m ago
I would’ve honestly given her the steamer. “Hot chocolate BUT with __” indicates to me that the chocolate aspect she doesn’t want in the drink.
We’ve had people order this and 9/10 they have no idea what they even want.
somewheredaydreaming2 points9m ago
Maybe she's one of those customers who thinks mocha is coffee and she wanted just a regular PSL, literally the only explanation I could have for why it would be so confusing for her
jelizt1 points9m ago
Only because she said pumpkin powder maybe she was thinking that we have powdered hot chocolate packets like how you make it at home.

I’m not sure what was lost in translation. Instead of mocha just sub pumpkin sauce. Ask about whip and pumpkin spice topping. No big deal.
