I (17F) have been working at the siren for almost a year now and I recently turned 17. I was trained as a closer, work as a closer, and train others to close; occasionally I work the midday shift but never open. Anyway, I would say I’m pretty good at my job, mostly cause I know how the store works and can judge how good the close would be when I get there. I also know what the shift supervisor does, I know what they’re supposed to do and different specific tasks just by watching them cause I can’t be a shift (under 18). So when I see they are behind they usually ask me to do some tasks that are meant for them, like the clean play, count, etc. And I do it every time, doesn’t entirely effect me as long as it’s not super hard. I tend to try to get everything done as quick as possible which can involve me doing the most time consuming and physically exhausting things. I just can’t help but do them so we get out on time.
But, the problem is that the shifts and my SM know this and take advantage of it. They will schedule two people to close instead of three just because I’m working and know i’ll close on time but scramble to get everything done. They put this pressure on me and just assume I will get it together. Sometimes, when im having a rough day or am tired I can’t just come to work and do everyone’s job and still get out on time. That’s when my manager gets mad. I can’t help but try to control freak my way to get stuff done and my SM knows this and is purposely overworking me.
I would prefer to be a shift just so I would get paid better for all the work I do but since I am a minor it’s impossible. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get out of this situation. I am still in school and balancing this is not sustainable.

The only tasks that are “shift tasks” are money, and inventory related tasks (pulls, counts, orders). Everything else can and in most cases should be delegated to baristas.
But to be clear if they are scheduling below forecast that’s an issue. You can check forcasted needs vs who is actually scheduled on the bottom section of your dcr.

Clean play is a shift task? It's always worked by baristas in our store (led by a keyholder) and they get out post midnight, so if you're a minor, you probably shouldn't be working those shifts during the school year. Check out your local laws.

Yea clean play should be a multi people task of a Shift and barista(s). And it depends on the store hours of when they'll get out. I know stores that close at 7:30 so they're out by 9pm and another that closes at 8:30 and out by 10pm. First one meaning minors can totally be scheduled for and second I've seen minors be scheduled mostly for training that ends before 10pm.

As a shift, I hate seeing people make baristas do shift tasks because they’re doing so much extra work for nothing in return. Being completely honest, you don’t get paid enough to be working as hard as you do and I don’t think that if you take a step back for a little while the repercussions are going to be that bad. If shifts ask you to do something like the pull/count/etc. just calmly explain to them that you don’t want to until you get paid the same because you’re doing their job. They shouldn’t get to slack off because you’re helpful. Idk just good for thought, hope it helps.

As a barista, I love doing the pull and getting those rare minutes off the circus floor.
Babeyy_Olivia11 points9m ago
Fair enough. If you enjoy it, keep doing it but don’t let them rely on you for everything.

I honestly think the hardest part of pulls/counts is having to be separate from the floor while you do them. I loved doing them when I was a barista. Still, though, I don’t ever ask a barista to do them unless they’ve expressed interest.

Anyone can do clean play. Why they make you do it during working hours and without appropriate coverage is the problem.
You need to talk to your SM and tell them you can’t run the store and do clean play at the same time. Clean play is meant to address disruptive tasks that couldn’t be otherwise done during business hours. If they have to do it during business hours then they need to schedule 2 other partners to do clean play only.

Stop working harder when they intentionally short you. You should not bump up your efforts when you know they are doing it intentionally. You'll burn yourself out teaching them that paying for fewer workers saves them money.

I am a shift. I try to get my stuff done asap so i can get back on the floor. The tasks/job of each barista is the same as the shift with the exception of cash pulls orders etc which are to be done by the shift. Now if i have a barista who is interested in the pull....i am more than happy to train them how....but only if they want it not because i want them to do it for me....which helps if you work a skeleton crew and someone is having a bad day and just cant deal with people....especially in summer when its hot and you just get to stand in front of the freezer while you work....getting time to de-stress and relax.
I do not understand the thinking behind some shifts believing they are above partner work like trash dishes etc just so they can get off the floor go in boh and do nothing. Part of being shift is observing training and taking notice of baristas...opportunities....and handling the customer and resolving issues and helping to help everything run smooth. You should be the smiling face people see when they walk in the store. If i am not willing to clean bathrooms or drains mop floors clean windows or the bottom of the milk fridge or a cold brew filter explosion....why should i expect a partner making less per hour to do the same?
Some of the stories and attitude i have seen here makes me question how some of these shifts were even ever promoted.
I am truly sorry that some of you work with the type of people who get a power trip and forget we are a team that works together....and instead take advantage of those with initiative who deserve praise recognition and promotion.
When my SM said she was going to drop my closing shift from 4-5 to 2-3 partners i looked sm dead in the face and advised we could do that but i needed the expectation of everything to be done would be lower....not because i would be lazy or refuse to do tasks....its just because some days i would not be able to get done what i would normally get done because i was getting less staff and unfortunately that would result in different outcomes dependent on situation. Sm agreed. If i have time i go ahead and pull expiring breakfast sandwiches and go ahead and put the morning pull away while rotating.....if delivery comes before we close and we had everything else done....i would put away the cold lunch items take temps and try to put away some of the delivery and put out anything we had run out of. Less staff means sometimes i don't get to it...it is an opening task but anything i can do to make open easier and I can do i will do because that usually results in my closing shift the next day going a whole lot smoother. This is especially helpful on days where we get call outs or get hammered by a festival or event we were not aware of.
I would definitely speak to my sm about the expectation versus the reality of the situation.

I start to not do others work. They caught on that I won’t so they started doing their job.

Yes. You are very much being screwed. Putting that pressure on you is unfair. Polite confrontation would serve best probably

at my store i was a closing barista like 3-4 weekdays a week when i was under 18 and it was normal to have only me and the closing shift most nights? like it was a treat if we had a second closing barista, and even when we didn’t, i was still plenty able to get everything done before we were supposed to be outta there. not sure what all you do for closing now, but that seems normal to me?
