Best response for the immediate “HELLO??”(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by 848341
Today is just one of those days where it seems everyone has no brain cells. We’ve been getting almost every single person pull up to the speaker box and immediately say “hello???” It’s not lose we take a long time to respond, they speak before we can reach our headsets. It’s really irritating.
What’s the best response when someone does this?
mcdonaldspriteremix185 points9m ago
when this happens i make myself sound as obnoxious as possible, being overly polite and drawing out my words, idk it's a new skill now bonus if they drive up and immediately wave you at you and hold their card out while you are taking another order
linseeded113 points9m ago
Bruh when the window is closed and they’re holding out their card 💀💀💀
th3_thing58 points9m ago
I must be the only one to prefer this over the person who's taking 20 minutes to find their card cuz they were on their phone the entire drive up to the window. Like bro, did you expect to pay with your looks?
Electrical_Metal_10610 points9m ago
True. I especially hate it when you know they’ve been in the line for a while.
Enough_Raise_71672 points9m ago
🤣
January11718 points9m ago
Tbf I do this sometimes but only because I want to make it as quick for the worker as possible - I don't mind at all waiting, I just don't want to be the hold up 😬

I bring out my inner twink and it really bothers them, and then all of a sudden the order is short and concise 😭
Enkeria92162 points9m ago
I tell them I’ll be with them shortly, then wait a minimum of 30 seconds to greet them. I’m a former partner, now manager at Dunkin, and my favorite lately is people ordering as soon as they pull up without being greeted. I immediately cut them off and with the “hi, how can I help you?” with a slight ‘tude in my voice because it’s rude to just order without being greeted.
spookbish6963 points9m ago
I full on let them say their entire order and ask them to repeat it when I’m ready. Especially if I ask them for a moment so I can finish whatever I’m doing to give them my full attention and they start ordering. They can wait, the coffee isn’t that important
fuckinweed6926 points9m ago
Same here, esp if I come back from the hello with 'hey I'll be right with you'. Go ahead and tell me ur order, I've already got the headset off my ear so I can talk to the guy at the window who forgot to order 2 drinks and a pupcup😵💫
moon_light5235 points9m ago
I let them order too but I just pretend like I didn’t hear them bc I didn’t great them 😂 “i’ll be like ‘Hi welcome to starbucks what can I get for you” and if they try to be like “I just ordered” or something i’ll be like “oh weird I didn’t great you or hear it over the headset— what can I get for you”
aBriocheBun2 points9m ago
i also ask for the order to be repeated if they say it too quickly. My hands or the register can’t catch up to the pace they order at sometimes.
848341 [OP]49 points9m ago
i do that too. people don’t start ordering without being greeted as often, but i absolutely interrupt them when they do.
DreddOrthodoxy22 points9m ago
I personally just ignore these as I’m probably taking payment from a customer and trying to understand why the customer wanted to reload the exact amount and not pay directly. The customer at the speaker can wait or they can wait.
linseeded23 points9m ago
“The customer at the speaker can wait or they can wait” why did that send me LMAO
Latter-Guava-47348 points9m ago
Facts about the reload though. There’s this one lady who orders this crazy Frappuccino a couple times a week and it ends up being around $10 maybe. But every time she has us only reload $10 on her app, in cash. Like what’s even the point of that? Have me scan your app for points and then I’ll take the $10 and give you change.
myugglass3216 points9m ago
i think it’s because of the extra stars which i think is dumb
[deleted]2 points9m ago

kaefeen2 points9m ago
i hate when ppl want to reload the exact amount
lilkiosk8 points9m ago
Oh yeah I’m a firm believer in if you couldn’t wait to be greeted or you don’t have the listening skills when I say it’ll be just a minute, I will make you repeat your order :)
claretamazon96 points9m ago
Be as sugary sweet as possible. 'thank you soooo much for your patience!' is how I start when I do that.
giftedburn0ut11 points9m ago
exactly what I do
kaefeen0 points9m ago
i swear this is counterproductive i can’t bring myself to do this
yungfroggie89 points9m ago
for real i intentionally wait up to a full minute before answering. helpful for allowing bar to catch up before putting in a new order lol. if i tell someone to wait a moment and they continue to order i make them repeat everything they said.
one time a lady pulled up and without waiting for a response or anything just went “HELLOOOO can i get an iced hazelnut latte and a cheese danish warmed up that’s all” and my supervisor waited a whole minute before picking up and making her say her entire order again 💀
olivinemultichrome25 points9m ago
That’s when you ask ALL the questions and draw out their order. What size was that latte? Is the usual 2% milk okay? Was there anything else I can get you today? And you said you wanted that danish heated, right?
848341 [OP]14 points9m ago
amazing. i love it
vivnaomi82 points9m ago
I’ll answer back, “Yes?” and if they try to order, I immediately interrupt and say we need a second.
848341 [OP]21 points9m ago
ooo this is good
happymasquerade1 points9m ago
Yep. I just say “Hi!” And then when they try to order I tell them to wait lol
Lost_Treat_629682 points9m ago
Just ignore em till im ready, they've already introduced themselves anyways.. haha
848341 [OP]31 points9m ago
That seems like the best option that wouldn’t get me in trouble, but i wanna be passive aggressive so badly 😂😭
linseeded14 points9m ago
I respond “I’ll be with you in a moment” then take my time lol
[deleted]1 points9m ago

ProfessorSalt4134 points9m ago
Tried that once and it was a “HELLO??” When they pulled up, three seconds later “HELLOOOOO?” And then they immediately pulled away and stopped up at the window instead
chicken-tiddies66 points9m ago
I don't say anything. I wait and then say "thank you soooo much for your patience, how can I help you?"
I don't care if they're saying hello, if they've already said their whole order, or if it's a mobile.
We will be with you as soon as we can. If you don't want to wait, place a mobile and come inside to get it.
gemlikbase52 points9m ago
I had a coworker at my old store who, when a customer would do that, would greet them, but then cut them off in the middle of them ordering and say “what can I get for you? 😁” lmfaO
848341 [OP]13 points9m ago
that’s funny 😂
moon_light5233 points9m ago
i’ve done that before lol
rnaggie5349 points9m ago
My coworker says “are you ready?” Very urgently
848341 [OP]12 points9m ago
YES. this is good
rubberboss138 points9m ago
best response is simply “HELLO?!”
Firm-Ant768412 points9m ago
I also will just go “hello” and they usually don’t know how to respond. Then I’ll usually let them know I’ll be with them in a minute 😭 my favorites are the people who pull up and say hello, and then when you ask what they want to order they ask for a moment.
almondmiilktea3 points9m ago
sometimes i say “hi :)” and then wait lol
Babeyy_Olivia5 points9m ago
“hey” and nothing else. it’s great
848341 [OP]3 points9m ago
hahah imagine
rubberboss110 points9m ago
I don’t have to, I’ve lived it many times. It’s wonderful 🤣
Formal-Ad28632 points9m ago
did this 5 minutes ago 💀💀
dallizzlee2 points9m ago
This is what I do 😂
hotlinee28 points9m ago
I don’t say anything for a while even if I’m not busy 😇 let them wait and yell to themselves. Alternatively “I’ll be with you in just a second” and let them wait longer than they normally would.
What gets me is when they “HELLO??” and then when I ask them what they want, they say “Can I have a minute?”. Seriously that’s happened to me multiple times
848341 [OP]4 points9m ago
literally.
Mr_SCPF24 points9m ago
I let them sit there. Each additional hello resets the timer.
When I still worked at McDonalds, I had enough of this one dude repeatedly saying hello, so I told them, “saying hello won’t get me to take your order faster.”
He drove off.
848341 [OP]9 points9m ago
Last time we made someone mad like that they threw trash from their car at our window..
star_pants20 points9m ago
"Hello, I'll be right with you!"
Then when you're ready (or they've calmed down) "Thank you for your patience, what can we get for you?"
848341 [OP]6 points9m ago
that’s probably the correct response. but i feel like they won’t know what they’re doing is considered rude
star_pants9 points9m ago
If you feel like it, you can mention something like "Hello, yes I heard you drive up, I'll be with you in just a moment" or something.
Although in my experience most people who do this don't care/understand. It's just fast food so they expect fast service. I think these are the same people that will snap at waitstaff in restaurants.
Edit: Also if someone starts ordering I just wait until they're done or I'm in a good spot and thank them for their patience. You know, the patience they clearly demonstrated /s
ApartPresentation79016 points9m ago
I don’t say shit, make their clown ass repeat their order when i’m ready 😌
RyusuiJL16 points9m ago

No_Flower_730513 points9m ago
Before I transferred to a cafe store, I used to tell people who did this, "Hi. Welcome to Starbucks, we'll be right with you" and if they continued to attempt to order I repeated it with the same nice bubbly tone but more sternly and slowly. Lolzz, the response was always, oh 😳.
What I didn't expect was when a customer recently came into to cafe while I was on bar and no one was at register [they were on ovens finishing up an order]. So I greeted them, said we'll be right with them etc. But this lady ignored what I said, saw no one on register, and then continued to start listing off her order. Some people aren't really listening, or fully aware of there surroundings. It did give make me laugh though, she was definitely in her own world lol.
848341 [OP]4 points9m ago
I’ve had someone do the same, where they walked in and I was on bar and told them someone would be right with them. She came up to me at the mistrenas and started ordering??? Girl does this look like a register to you?
kaefeen2 points9m ago
i passive aggressively just say oh you can order over there where the register is and point to it and wait to stop pointing till they look over 😅
Notsotaciturn2 points9m ago
Omg dud you guys make her repeat her order ?
DustbinFunkbndr12 points9m ago
“Thanks for choosing Starbucks, I’ll be right with you”
Yeah it’s annoying. Yeah they’re an inconsiderate prick. But don’t take it personally. Don’t let it add even an ounce of stress or negativity to your day. Just move on. You got this.
willowthywillow10 points9m ago
“Hello” but Adele-style
sparkleblarkle2 points9m ago
Lmaooooooo
willowthywillow6 points9m ago
“Hello….it’s me…” and then pause and say woah did you just hear that? I think Adele was here
depressedbarista4208 points9m ago
MAKE THEM WAIT!
benevolentchainsaw8 points9m ago
I used to just say, “Hello.” And then wait for them to like ask how I am or do something else. Fun experiment.
peachiez_8 points9m ago
i wait, get on the headset just to say “thanks for choosing starbucks!! this is peachiez, take a moment to look over our menu and i’ll be with you in just a moment,” then wait at least a minute before saying “thank you so much for waiting, what can i get started for you?” with the sweetest, disney princess-esque voice i can muster.
it’s very fun to watch them get pissed off LMFAO
Toomanyboringpeople7 points9m ago
I am so glad I transferred to a cafe only y’all are triggering flashbacks 😂
elrobolobo5 points9m ago
Wait a second, say "hello? Can you hear me?" And then when they start talking give them the polite "Hi and welcome to Starbucks..." Over them
No_Indication_52055 points9m ago
The people who say "hello" then when you greet them and are mumbling a bunch and I respond "I'm sorry, I cant hear you " and then they don't respond and I realize they're talking on the phone or with others settling an order and I respond "just let me know when you're ready" in a very high pitched overly nice, you just pissed me off tone and wasted my time are my favorite because the way they creak out that they're ready after that is far less entitled.
rascal-1115 points9m ago
i literally just ignore them
which probably doesn’t help but….
mrcupcake185 points9m ago
It makes me so happy reading the comments knowing I’m not the only one that makes them sit there after they pull up and say “HELLO?!” or I tell them I will be right with them after they do this and make them wait for a minute 😂
Electrical_Metal_1063 points9m ago
I miss what we did at my old store. After telling the person that we would be right with them, we would all just start imitating the “hello” over our headsets. It was really a fun bonding experience because we would make something fun out of something annoying. (This was obviously after peak lol)
848341 [OP]2 points9m ago
amazing
crapricorn-013 points9m ago
If they pull up w “hello” I say “hi give us one sec we’ll be right w you” and make them wait just a tiny while for me to get the car out and cash them out, not that I need the extra time but ….. 🤠
melkorarose2 points9m ago
I've had people come up and immediately start ordering, and I've had people order the minute I even speak and 9/10 times im telling them I'll be wirh them in a second. They'll order over me no matter what so I just ignore them and let them squirm impatiently lol
snailsdotcom2 points9m ago
usually even if i can help them i go “i’ll be right with you” and i always end the interaction with “and thank you for your patience!!:)!!!” BIGGEST PET PEEVE I HATE WHEN THEY DO THAT
bumblebuzzed2 points9m ago
make them wait longer and give them decaf lol
848341 [OP]1 points9m ago
decaf and 90% ice in their drinks are my go-to
Caaboose2 points9m ago
I made a habit of immediately saying "thanks for choosing sbux, we'll be with you in just a moment" as SOON as I heard the ding. Anyone who managed to get HELLO out before that was treated to silence for a few minutes. Our location is so busy there's ALWAYS a line - you know we're open. You're being rude. There was a woman who trained her toddler grandchild to do it in the most annoying, screaming tone. I don't care if it's dead in here - now you wait.
JMarBrwn2 points9m ago
“Hey, that’s MY line!”
comedic, but gets your point across
848341 [OP]2 points9m ago
i’m gonna try this one
saddestgirl19952 points9m ago
I literally just go "heyyyyyy"
mossygreentree132 points9m ago
literally every single time someone does this i just respond back with a very very overly customer service “HIIII!!!!!” like immediately because it’s like bruh hi? like give me a sec damn. After saying “hi!” in like a very condescending tone i usually tell them “i will be right with you okay?” like as if they’re a child and then i wait for like an entire minute before letting them order and help 2 cars at the window before helping them. I hate when people do that soooo much
Candyexotica2 points9m ago
One moment please.
- - - Sorry about that! What can I get for you?
nonogender2 points9m ago
when i was on dt i tried to avoid this altogether by immediately saying "we'll be right with you" after the ding if i was busy. if i forgot to say it though, and i got the "hello," i would just say the same thing.
djdementia2 points9m ago
Hi, welcome to your neighborhood starbucks. My name is djdementia. How is your morning going today?
<delay tactic so I can get that double smoked in the oven>
firepaper2 points9m ago
I love to talk at the same time as them lmao. But like not answering what they’re saying but just staying on my little script. It’s extra annoying I think

I just parrot them

MonsteraNSFW1 points9m ago
I always say " I'll be with you in juuuust a moment!" Then pause....and open with "Thank you for your patience! What can I get started for you today?" C: with extra pizzaz.
_vannahloo_1 points9m ago
Say “hi.” And nothing else
almondmiilktea1 points9m ago
I like to say “If you could give me just one second I’ll take your order in a moment.” and then wait maybe 30 secs & say “Thanks so much for being patient, what can I get started for you today :)”
Intelligent-Ad12731 points9m ago
I immediately responded with “we’ll be right with you” and then take the time to connect with the customer at the window, wipe down my area, and take a breather before answering them. They played themselves, honestly
Asunaturtle1 points9m ago
Even if I'm not the person on dto I yell into the mic to greet them. Give them a taste of their own medicine y'know
Urmomscoochiehairs1 points9m ago
I love to tell ppl I’ll be with them in just a moment
Bhaisaab861 points9m ago
I do one of two things
1. Wait about ten seconds and then greet them
2. Hold the headset mic as close to my mouth as possible and also talk louder than I normally do
[deleted]1 points9m ago
[deleted]
tadomegu1 points9m ago
I tell them to give me a minute, then after waiting a minute, I very deliberately say in my best customer service voice “thank you SO MUCH for your PATIENCE, what are we getting today?”
lilleniouo1 points9m ago
lately at my store everyone pulls up "hello??" "welcome to Starbucks what can I get started for you?" "hold on" I stand there dumbfounded as to why they said hello in the first place and when they're finally ready to order I tell them "hold on one moment please" wait like 4 seconds "alrighty what can I get for you"
dmvsnapshot1 points9m ago
I just let them sit there and keep saying hello
happypoptart01 points9m ago
I make them wait a little lollllll
Praxlyn1 points9m ago
“Hi thanks for your patience what can I get started for you?”
pastelldillann1 points9m ago
“Thanks for choosing our Starbucks, we’ll be with you in just one moment” and then I make them wait for a minute.
