i am a green bean fresh out of training and just had a panic attack right before my first shift without a trainer. i am an anxious person but it’s never been so bad that i cause myself to throw up and have problems in the bathroom. i messaged my manager to let him know i couldn’t make it (because going in vomiting/diarrhea is breaking sick policy) but it’s 3am and my shift starts at 5:30. i am honestly still freaking out and feel like a failure so far. my training didn’t feel complete at all and i’ve never worked a morning shift before, much less one on the weekend. i need this job but i don’t know if i am cut out for it and don’t know what to do :(((

You did the right thing by being honest about your symptoms regarding the sick policy. You are not a failure! You’re not going in feeling like this at this point, so take the day to rest and do some things that will help calm your body and mind. Try not to think about work for the day. Then come back whenever you are scheduled next and take it moment by moment. As for not feeling prepared just after training, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone is new at something at some point, so just ask questions and do your best! it’s just coffee and as annoying as it may be, if it really doesn’t work out after a few weeks of trying it then you can put in apps at other places and go from there. Either way, you’ve got this and you aren’t alone :-)

Try this exercise;

Whats the worst that could happen? Maybe a customer yells at you, you make some stuff wrong and have to remake it, you spill something and make a huge mess...

Whats the best that could happen? You go in to your shift and you know how to do most things and dont feel overwhelmed at all

Whats most likely to happen? You go into work and know some things, but you're new and your partners know that and are likely to answer your questions and help you learn what you need to learn. Maybe you make some mistakes, but thats how you learn.

Anxiety largely stems from the unknown, and a new job is scary because there is SO much you dont know! But thats okay. Be willing to learn and remember that its just coffee! Even your worst day (and there will be some), its still just coffee... try not to let customers get to you, its not worth letting them have that control over your emotions and your day.

Good luck! You'll be okay ♡♡♡

You are so lovely. I’m also new to starbies and struggle with anxiety and this helped me a lot for the week ahead. ❤️

You are not a failure! Please don’t feel that way, as someone who struggles with anxiety and pukes when it gets bad don’t put yourself down because of it. I would look for other jobs, i would recommend a local pet store or something of a similar nature they are a lot less fast paced. I’m so sorry its caused you this much stress 💜💜💜💜 take the day to breathe lovely

don't worry, if you can try to push through a bit more (while you're not sick!) i would recommend you do. i had the same problem when i first started, panic attacks so bad i'd literally start to pass out from stress and being overwhelmed but now i've been here over a year :) it's reaaaally stressful at first but you may be able to work through it with time. maybe ask your ssv to put you on a more chill position and work up to other positions over time? i hope all works out though, regardless of if it's with starbucks or not!
