SM not respecting my availability (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Giidget
Hey y’all. So I’m a full time student with ASU, taking 16 credits currently, and I’ve had my availability at work set from Sun-Friday 5am-1pm (we open at 5:30). I transferred to this store like four months ago now and I let my SM know I’d like to stay under 25 hrs/week due to being a full time student. Well, for the last two and half months I’ve been getting scheduled 30+ hrs and I’ve continuously let my SM know that that’s too much for me and balancing work + school has been affecting my mental health. She basically told me we’re too short staffed for her to support my availability and that she’s “trying her best” yet she isn’t hiring anyone as far as I know. I submitted a new availability and she has either been ignoring it or hasn’t seen it, which is unlikely given I submitted 4 days ago. Anyway, what are some things I can given the situation I’m in? Do I take this up to the DM? Help D;

Also, I’m not the only one who is being scheduled a lot of hours. Some partners are getting 44hr work weeks (they aren’t students) but still. Is this even okay?

Start applying for new jobs now, once you get an offer I’d text your sm and ask one more time, then when she gives you the same bs I’d say something like “I’ve unfortunately found alternative employment willing to respect my availability, consider this my official separation from the company”

If she’s with ASU I don’t think she is able to switch jobs.

Honestly I’m consider quitting and just taking out students loans. I don’t think the mental toll it’s taking on me is worth it

I got so tunnel visioned by the end of the post that I forgot ASU was even mentioned 😅😂

The DMs most likely not going to care since technically your SM is within her right to schedule 30+ hours since it’s in your availability and the SM can also deny your new request if it doesn’t fit the needs of the store.

Darn :(

When SMs can't or won't respect availability, you have to take away all wiggle room. Make it their problem. Shorten that to 10am instead of 1pm.

That’s what I’m trying to do since submitting my new availability but it hasn’t been acknowledged in any way :/

Submitting a new availability is a request and not a sure thing. They can deny it if it doesn’t fit the needs of the store.

Ask her, in person.

This sounds like what happened to me last time I worked at Starbucks. It was my second job and I was getting scheduled double what I asked for in my interview, despite me asking nicely several times I was still getting screwed over every week. Eventually my other work gave me a promotion so I dipped.

ask to be transferred, if your availability doesn’t did the needs of the store ask to be transferred to a store that can accommodate you

Okay this shit scares me so much 😭. I'm about to start ASU and this is the first job benefit I'm going to rely on. I'm sorry about your situation!!

Yeah it sucks. Starbucks wants to preach about how they’ll pay for your tuition with ASU by “only working 20 hours a week” but what they don’t tell you is every store is under staffed and you’ll actually be working close to full time 🥴

Ask for a new availability sheet and say you want an updated one for your file.
