okay how do y'all disconnect and reconnect kegs because my store is divided. half of us do grey/black then black/grey and the other half do grey/black then grey/black. what is the right way?
clouds18396 points9m ago
don’t let the gas be alone essentially. so always take gas off first, and put gas on last.
twistedstarfall16 points9m ago
I always teach "gas first, gas last" to our green beans as a helpful phrase to remember the order
StephStan67 points9m ago
You don't want the nitrogen (grey) left on there alone, so off is grey then black, and on is black then grey.
threepeasonepod7 points9m ago
easiest way to remember. nothing bad has happened when i’m in a rush and go in the wrong order, sometimes there’s just a little burst of nitrogen that leaks out.
northernelis7 points9m ago
Why? Genuinely curious. Might be a stupid question.
olivinemultichrome14 points9m ago
It can leak or, if failsafe seals don’t work, explode. Gas is basically the “in” pressure line and cold brew is the “out” pressure line. So you always want the gas to have a way out of the pressurized container to avoid the worst case scenario of pressure building until it goes boom.
This is a suuuper unlikely rare occurrence but technically possible and a good way to remember why it’s important to do things in the right order.

I'm honestly not sure. That's just what one of the techs said one of the times they came to fix our fridge's thermostat.
Emperor_Palpapeen24 points9m ago
IN then OUT (to disconnect) OUT then IN (to connect new keg)
TheDialingRain4 points9m ago
This is the way
MrsClaireUnderwood23 points9m ago
People have already mentioned it, but when connecting a new keg, it's **cold brew on first**, **gas on second**.
When removing an empty keg, it's **gas off first**, **cold brew off second**.
InternetTurnedMeGay20 points9m ago
The cold brew fridge itself tells you to connect the grey line first what are yall talking about
awesomechief9895 points9m ago
I was thinking this. The new nitro fridge literally tells you to connect gas then liquid/out. But with the older models it’s gas never alone for my understanding
udderlymoovelous2 points9m ago
Idk about u but I’ve always struggled more to connect the black line when they grey line is connected first, so I always do black first. Pretty much everyone I’ve worked with does it that way too
MasterMischievous-35 points9m ago
We don’t all work at your special store where everybody’s job is spelled out for you.
Torirock101 points9m ago
bruh what 💀
gabby246817 points9m ago
I’ve always done it gas off first, gas on last. Had to tell my manager and she didn’t care lol.
yaaasqueenie5 points9m ago
The fridge tells you to take out black grey, then grey black. But the gas guy told us to NEVER, under any circumstances, leave the gas (grey) alone.
So therefore it is (disconnect) grey black, (connect) black grey
Foster_theplayer5 points9m ago
While this is all correct theoretically, and it was the old standard, they actually changed the standard to always be gas first no matter what. I’m guessing the intention is less confusion with minimal risk.
ImaginaryPick88854 points9m ago
Inside out oreo (grey/white, black, black, grey/white). Grey is gas, you only want it on it if it has the liquid part on.
mama_mama_serpentine3 points9m ago
I was taught grey black off grey black on, and I’m pretty sure that’s the order it tells you to do it in on the machine? At least when you’re disconnecting a product keg and connecting the cleaning keg to clean the bev line.

Short story: grey/black on and grey/black off
Long story: So originally it was the black/grey on and then the opposite off (so grey/black). However at some point it was changed in the training to be always the gas first whether it be connecting or disconnecting (so grey/black on or off), BUT there wasn't much information provided to people who had already been trained.
So a couple of years ago I had this debate with a partner, and I was able to find instructions on the partner hub that listed both ways, but dated from different years. When I was trained on it they said to never leave the gas connected by itself for safety reasons, but when they were trained later on it said to do it grey/black on grey/black off. If I remember correctly the change was in 2018/19? I'm not sure if both copies are still on the hub, but the most recent one said to do it grey/black.
Essentially, it seems to depend on how old your source was/who trained who and it's a great example of communication breakdown within the company.
lizchesley2 points9m ago
i always forget so i just do them both at the same time lol.
Chachasah2 points9m ago
When putting a new keg i always remember COFFEE FIRST and coffee is black. So attach black first always.
Then to disconnect is the opposite, so instead of black first its disconnect gray first.
mymelodywithaglock1 points9m ago
the new standard is grey connector is always first. new keg or cleaning or what. hell the freaking fridge tells you exactly how to do it after you clean it.
purseEffphony1 points9m ago
I was taught black first and to remember it as "black out drunk"

i'm surprised nobody has mentioned that when you're taking an empty keg out, to take off the "in" tube first. and then, with the "out" tube still on, bleed the air from the keg. it removes any air trapped in the line.
and then proceed to change the keg after. otherwise, it takes time for the air to move out of the tap, and for the cold brew to flow.
LittleAd5821 points9m ago
Nitro in so cold brew comes out so when pulling off black gray then gray black
dlcksuck1 points9m ago
This post is how I found out I’ve been doing it wrong for three years lmao
sero50741 points9m ago
Disconnect- grey then black (gas off and disconnect cold brew) Connect- black then grey (cold brew on then turn gas on)
trousersquid1 points9m ago
Think of it like a car battery and the gas is the charge. Always keep it grounded with Cold Brew.
insomniac4x40 points9m ago
Officially it goes
To disconnect : in then out (grey then black)
To connect: out then in ( black then grey)
go into the iPad on store resources and look up how to change a keg and that way you can show your store
darkwolf5230 points9m ago
Black one first then the grey one for me. That’s what I was told
Distinct-Ferret-18010 points9m ago
When connecting, black and gray. When disconnecting, gray then black.
