short shifts, early breaks (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by canadiancookie98
Okay, I have worked a lot of 4.75 hour shifts (I've been a partner since 2018), but at my new store my SSVs are running my ONE AND ONLY break anywhere from 1-1.5 hours after I've arrived at the store.

Some context: I'm an exclusive opener, so I understand that they want to run breaks before peak but we are a new store and our peak right now is literally all day because we are so understaffed (we've had to shorten our store hours because of this as well)
I also have type 1 diabetes so going for long periods of time (with high activity) is not good for my blood sugars.

So my question: is it unreasonable to tell me SSV that I want to take my break later?

Is it worth my time to get some workplace accommodations?

As an SSV we’re told to never run breaks during peak. We’re supposed to have everyone deployed during peak hours. You could see but if you’re severely understaffed I highly doubt it. I hate running my openers breaks so early but I don’t really have a choice because we’re not allowed to run breaks during peak.

I’d still talk to your SSV. They can maybe try to compromise a little better but it may not be possible due to peak plus understaffed 😭

Thank you! This makes so much more sense.

Say your shift is 6-10:45 and peak starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:30 it’s very hard to get your break in, especially since I have to usually give the openers half’s after peak. That’s the reasoning behind it. I wouldn’t ever do this to a partner myself (I also usually only give out longer shifts so I don’t struggle with giving breaks too early as much) but this gives you a reason. Talk to you shift supervisor, maybe you can work something out.

I would talk to your SSV, because our store also leans towards never ending peaks so I wouldn’t be able to run breaks if I followed the no breaks during peak rule. It’s just not practical. Typically that’s around when an 8 hour partner would take their first ten because they get two more breaks. So maybe you can ask to be put at the end of the break queue?

Maybe if during peak morning hours you could be on warming so if you need to get food in your system for blood sugar it’d be a little more accessible?
