So I’ve been a shift for a year plus another year a while back. I have never gone through what I’m about to explain so any help is appreciated. I’m having issues with a partner that is being promoted to shift that will be leaving to another store. I’ll call them Sam. Sam is 18 and going through an identity crisis. They don’t feel right being called she/her or he/him. Also hates being referred to as they/them. So I’ve asked if it’s okay to just refer to Sam by their name. The answer was “no, I want to feel like I matter and that my feelings are valid.”Calling me by my name is inhumane” The issue is that we have a trans and a non-binary partner who feel as though Sam is just being inconsiderate and trying to draw attention to themselves because they aren’t trying to make an effort of how to help us help them. I’m not sure what to do because a lot of our team feels very confused when referring to Sam and doesn’t want to be disrespectful but also don’t necessarily want to feel like they have to walk on eggshells around them.

It doesn’t seem like there’s anything they want to go by So I would just refer to them as Sam… what
else are you to do? Lol

Yeah, so I’m trans and agree with your partners. Sam is placing an unreasonable burden on y’all with this and it’s extremely inconsiderate. It’s not your or anyone else’s job to help Sam figure out their identity.

As an enby person...I'm genuinely confused 😅 I mean, I dislike my name and would like to change it someday but don't have any ideas now, so just go by a shortened version of my legal name. Maybe Sam has issues with the name Sam?

There are other pronouns y'all can try out (ze/zim, zey/zer and others Sam can research) but until Sam figures it out, literally what are you supposed to refer to them as? The barista with the x-colored hair or t-shirt?

I can see you're being accommodating just by asking these questions, and I see no way you're being "inhumane" by using Sam's name, unless there is another preferred name (but you didn't include that so idk?). You can only do so much with what you're given. Sam will figure it out, but making y'all feel like your walking on eggshells isn't healthy behavior for anyone and is Not Okay.

How about "you"? I mean, in all seriousness, would sound rude anywhere. But "you" doesn't imply anything, it's a designation of where the conversation is being directed at. I honestly don't know..🤷🏻‍♂️

Maybe this person would have another name to go by?
