Question about new training program? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by witcheselementality
I'm a trainer. Trained a couple people before the updated training, and I have also trained 1 person after the updated training. That last trainee was a re-hire, so we really skipped around, spent most of the 2 weeks re-learning support and bar.

I'm gonna train again, starting today actually. And I'm curious, what do you actually do for the first day? It says Mission and Values and Customers at our Core. I know what that means, but how do you spend 3 hours talking about the culture?

I do love the extra time we get training. I know our baristas need it. But I'm not sure how to spend a whole day talking and explaining the culture without being on the floor?

I’ve so far trained 2 people on the new program, and am currently training 1. I do my training almost the same way, but with extra days of working on the floor together. I spend maybe 10 minutes talking about store culture. I also find the idea of “coffee & connect” every shift exhausting, and I think it would definitely take more than the 5 minutes allotted.

For me personally I like to take them out to the cafe and let them observe how our partners interact with each other and customers on the floor, and kind of point out how that environment ties into our missions and values. You can also go over the mission statements with them and talk about what they mean to you! (i pull a lot out of my ass here but it works) Ask what missions and values stand out to them the most and why, or is they have any first hand experiences with those missions and values as a customer. You can also talk about the coffee culture starbucks has etc… Good luck with your green bean!!

I followed the order of training but as for the times I would just spend as much time on it as I felt was needed then move on.
