medical leave for baristas (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vertigo00o
this is a mess of a rant, i can’t think straight. excuse the incomplete thoughts + grammar mistakes lmao
i’m currently on medical leave for a back injury, and i can’t stand or sit without pain so i can really only lay down and feel somewhat normal. i lose feeling in my arms and legs if i sit weird and it hurts to breathe. i was getting better but i feel like i went back in my healing and my boss is getting pissy at me. i literally can’t control this and last week i was in so much pain i was passing out. it’s almost unbearable constant pain.
i know i’m one of the ‘best baristas’ (customers and my dm said this, not my words) at my store but i feel like i’m taken advantage there and they know i will pick up hours when they need me to. i don’t feel heard by my boss and i know i can be out until i feel better but i feel like such a fuckijg burden. like i know it’s literally just bean juice with milk but i feel like i can’t take time for myself. i feel so helpless and i feel like i’m just causing more problems than there should be.

Sorry you’re suffering so much. I’ve had back injuries, but not to this level, so feel better soon. Do you know if you’re eligible for FMLA and/or your states medical leave if they have one? If not, you’re definitely covered under the ADA.

Stop communicating with your manager, you’re only required to provide medical certification as updates of your leave if it’s extended. And you should be able to provide that to someone above your manager, like HR etc. Those medical updates provide your private medical information and you don’t have to share that with your manager if it makes you uncomfortable. An organization as large as Starbucks can certainly find coverage for your shifts, your manager doesn’t get to bother you on your protected leave of absence. So, find out who best to escalate your leave needs above your manager and be sure to keep them updated. Block your manager if needed.

Side note, be aggressive with your doctors and care team. The level of pain you described can actually slow down your healing. Demand, better medication, therapy, alternative procedures, etc. you have to be your own advocate, no one else will care as much.

i talked to the sedgwick peeps and i’m getting my that 66% of whatever the thing is. i’m waiting for my new primary doc to call but i might just have to go “be a karen” and advocate for myself.
i know my boss is trying to be friendly since she knows i don’t trust her but i’m just communicating the bare min. with her. i dont really talk to anyone else unless they initiate the conversation
and as far as medical care, my insurance just kicked in on oct 1 so im super new to all of this, and the timing of my back injury (before 10/1) i had to wait until yesterday to get it looked at.
i just got muscle relaxers tho so the pain should .. yeet itself a lil bit
im just bored and thank you so much for helping lucky star :D u a homie
