advice on recovering mentally from a tough shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by shortblondebarista
as a still relatively new green bean (nearing 2 months), i’m struggling to get out of my head after stressful shifts whether it be from mistakes i made during the shift or even just embarrassing moments in front of the more experienced baristas. any tips on how to brush things off and find motivation to go into my next shift?

As long as you're getting better everyday, you'll eventually get comfortable with the job.

Everyone makes mistakes at first, and it's a lot to know!

People years in still make mistakes and do embarrassing things. Lol the longer ur there, u will see that from the tenured baristas as well lol. Its actuwlly less weirder if it happens to green beans lol but all in all, its ok to screw up. Im 2 and a half years in and i still screw up here n there!

When I was a Green Bean, I’d tell myself “It’s just coffee.”. When it came to it, I told myself it wasn’t important. When it came to making a mistake, I learned from it, I never beat myself up over it. I refused to acknowledge it after I clocked out.

I've been a partner for over a year, and I struggle with the same thing sometimes. It helps me to look at the situation as an outsider. Switch roles between you and whoever you were working with as you imagine whatever happened. Would you be upset with them? If so, reach out to them and apologize and ask for advice. If not, try and practice some self compassion. Remember, we are only human. Sometimes, people make mistakes and that's OK.

I've also found it helpful to journal after work! So, after my shift I'll reflect on things that went well, and things that didn't. I'll congratulate myself on things that made me proud. For the stuff that didn't go well, I write out what I think I can do next time to fix it. Once it's on the page and im done writing, I do my best to push it out of my brain. Sometimes it is easier said than done...but I hope this helps a little!

You can get headspace (a really useful meditation app) for free through Starbucks benefits. It helps me through really tough shifts. I do breathing exercises on my breaks and stuff. A good resource if you’re interested!

Sounds like a great yourself at the store day. I make myself ice cream as a markout, take a treat to go and lay in bed having my spoils and watch TV. Cuz eff Starbucks honestly.

Don’t stress about a mistake that happened in a moment for your entire day. You learn from it and move on. That’s how learning works. You’re still new and your improving everyday. Don’t let bad moments dictate your entire day.
