Manager talks to me about work while I'm on break (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dontcry2022
-_-

By work I mean my upcoming tasks when I'm back.

My manager is kind and stuff so it's not a personal thing.

But this makes me wanna sit somewhere I can't be found lol, like. Tell me when I get back pls

I understand where your manager is coming from, I think I do stuff like this, too. I will forget unless I let someone know. I would ask ur manager to write things on a list for you if you are on your break. Seems like an easy compromise.

Yeah I get that. But a break is a break lol, I feel like because I could literally leave the premises for 10 minutes if I wanted to, managers should similarly just act like I'm gone even if I'm sitting there. Because I personally don't wanna spend 30 seconds of my 10 minute break listening to and responding to work info. Customer and partner interactions are half of what exhausts me about this job lol, my break is my time to sorta unmask and relax and be with my own thoughts.

If I wasn't intimidated by this manager I might follow your suggestion but I feel like if I said this, they would take it as a confrontation lol and I can't handle that tbh

No, you’re completely right, and i understand, I take my breaks seriously.
I just thought u might like an explanation to a possible reason as to why ur manager does that. But it’s also possible that they just don’t respect your time off, it was like that for me in the military. And there I couldn’t say no so I just ended up leaving for the entirety of my lunch. That being said if u don’t want/can’t tell your manager to write it on a list for you then I would suggest you do the same and leave the store entirely.

I don’t suggest you go over your boss’ head to their supervisor without talking to them directly first because I’m almost certain your boss would not take that kindly.

EDIT:

Maybe you could talk to your manager about it with the help of the ASM or a shift supervisor? 🤔

Oops I should clarify this is a shift supervisor

Thanks for clarifying the reason! It does make sense and I'm sure they think they're being quick when they tell me but 1) they really aren't when I only have 10 mins anyway and 2) in order for me to be respectful, I have to look up from my phone and/or stop eating my food to respond which sucks bc I'm trying to decompress or get a bite to eat lol

I don't have plans to make it an issue, but I do have plans to make myself less accessible 😃

this is the exact reason i take my breaks in my car lol
badtimesman00 8 points 9m ago
Sames. If it's absolutely too cold to walk to my car, I take a spot in the cafe as far from the bar as possible and use headphones. And my timer starts when I'm *physically off* the floor, not when I'm told to go on break and still have to answer questions or take an order 🫠

What do you mean?

Like, is she just saying, "When you are back on the floor, flex into warming and send Bea on her meal?"

Or is she like, "OmG, I can't believe night shift missed the drains again! I saw a venti cup lid in there, and a sandwich wrapper! I got new scrub brushes for the drains in the order, when you're back can you find the box with those in them? I think they're on top of the freezer, but they might be by dish. And when you're back on the floor, will you make sure you hit those drains with restroom cleaner and then run at least 5L of hot water from the brewer tap..."

Because scenario 1, cool. Now I don't have to find the manager when I'm ready to go back on the floor, good to know.

Scenario 2, Excuse you, I'm on a break. Shh.

More like the first, but sometimes it's a bit more info or they'll say what their reasoning is behind that decision so it's more listening time for me

An easy solution would be them just telling me as I am taking my apron off, rather than while I'm scrolling on TikTok or eating etc

I would eat outside to get fresh air and avoid these kinds of situations

Go outside of the store

Wearing head phones and sitting with your back to the serving area moght work. 🤷

I think out of sight is best. If I'm anywhere within earshot, I get talked to. I worry if I put in headphones, they'll think I'm rudely/disrespectfully ignoring them if they try to talk to me and I don't respond

Or maybe I just need big headphones, like Beats. Not little earbuds. But even then, they might try and catch my attention
