Transgender Healthcare Question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by eemmmiiiilllyyy
I just got healthcare benefits at the beginning of this month & I want top surgery specifically.
Is there anyone who can help guide me in the right direction?
I can’t even figure out how to get the Spotify benefits & everything is so confusing.
I’m feeling super overwhelmed and stressed out but I know I can’t waste time doing nothing. Literally any information will help.
Please let me know anything you know!

If you find out an estimate for how much it ends up coating please let me know, it's been my barrier to entry for top surgery and I wanna know how much to expect under Starbies insurance!

You can call the Starbucks Advocacy hotline and they’ll put you in contact with someone who specializes in transgender coverage policy. I forget the number but your manager should have it in hand at the BoH. You won’t be dealing with Starbucks directly though, so calling them probably won’t help much since they no longer cover the cost for transgender healthcare; they’re just going to tell you to call your insurance directly.

For top surgery specifically, you’re going to go through your insurance provider directly. Starbucks doesn’t pay for top surgery anymore. So you should call your provider and get an account set up with them. You should make an appointment to get a check up with a gp while you do this since you’ll need to get your bmi, and some blood work on file and it’s best to do it sooner than later. Once you get set up, they’ll most likely have a transgender health specialist that can guide you through their specific hoops.

Generally though, you’re going to need to see a therapist to get a letter recommending you for surgery (getting this letter requires you to have been on hrt for a minimum of 12 continuous months). Then you’ll take the letter to your surgeon and work with them. Realistically if you start now, you’ll get top surgery by this time next year.

Yeah I’m trying to get top surgery by the end of next year. I have plenty of a medical paper trail, it’s just with the VA. They don’t cover transgender surgeries so I went out & got healthcare of my own.

But I’m confused, you said they don’t cover top surgery? But I can still get it? How..?

Starbucks used to cover 100% of the cost for any transgender related healthcare your primary insurance wouldn’t cover. But recently, they updated their insurance policies so every provider that partners with Starbucks HAS to provide top surgery for its patients. So instead of having Starbucks itself pay for the entire surgery cost, you now have to go through the insurance provider you get through Starbucks. This means copays, coinsurance and all that jazz.

Oh, I was under the impression that’s how it always was.
