Did anyone else here about shifts not being able to work with each other anymore? And we’re not allowed to pick up coverage shifts? Is this true? I’m freaking out a little 😀😭(self.starbucksbaristas)

At my store we literally work with like 5 at a time sometimes and it's always a ✨️vibe✨️
ABandJ_8 points9m ago
Do you work in texas?
[deleted]1 points9m ago
No :)
amonsterinrehab3 points9m ago
That’s how it is in Vegas at my store.
Imaginarybluntallday1 points9m ago
This happens at my store too sometimes I’m in the PNW tho
champshere1 points9m ago
Ayyyyyy
clouds18372 points9m ago
it’s the same rule our dm told us about. it’s to save the company money which is shitty of them.
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]24 points9m ago
Are they allowed to do that tho?
aint_that_right18 points9m ago
Yes, all staffing decisions are up to them. It’s stated very plainly in the Partner Guide that you’re not guaranteed hours and all scheduling is at the SM’s discretion.
verdeuce3 points9m ago
What state are you in
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]2 points9m ago
Tx
verdeuce2 points9m ago
Not company wide. Could be your district or area
Flowerfuls57 points9m ago
I haven’t heard anything. I know specific districts make up their own rules a lot but nothing company wide.
pumpkinbarr56 points9m ago
I’m an ssv and we all get scheduled coverage shifts at least once a week. I think this is district based.
iwannacry696 points9m ago
if I work at one location with a drive-through as my main job, you think as a second job I can Work at the Starbucks inside target or is that a completely different Type of Starbucks?
whookyshooky12 points9m ago
started at a corporate store, went to tarbucks (before $15 was the wage at corporate lol), youre an employee of target, depending on that stores management, that shouldn’t be an issue. essentially everything is the same supplies and drink builds (top of my head cold brew is different as you have to cut it w water in the cup vs a keg, and coffee brewers are different— thats it).. this is a lesson against greed, friends— I wouldnt recommend tarbucks as theres little support/context from target management and their expectations are unrealistic and unproductive.. thats my personal experience though
Dazzling_Pop_70739 points9m ago
Yes I hateddddd Tarbucks! The manager made me cry on my second week there so I just quit!
whookyshooky5 points9m ago
riiight !!!! it was truly an insane experience.. even my shift lead (was hired on at that tarbucks 4 months prior) was so unreasonable..
deeciphered11 points9m ago
They're different. The ones inside target are licensed stores so you're a target employee working in the Starbucks kiosk
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]9 points9m ago
I think they’re different..
rusted178 points9m ago
Yea target is licensed stores (aka tarbucks)
Intelligent_Wash90005 points9m ago
You can, but you have to apply to target directly and request starbucks (same goes for like a safeway or something) they are separate entities.
barcoleo4 points9m ago
I worked at a target Starbucks for 2 years. I loved my manager but the problem is the target higher ups. I suppose it may be different for other locations but management at target is shit. They don’t care about you and during covid I was harassed by a customer and the police wanted to file a restraining order for my own safety but target refused to help the police get any info. I quit a few weeks later and like 5 other people quit with me because of how it was handled. I even filed a report with the corporate HR but all they do is notify a manager that you filed a complaint. They also gave me a bad work review because of the incident. They made me go back to work that same day even though I was shaking and sobbing because I was scared for my life because they were more concerned about the Starbucks closing for an hour or two than the well-being of their employees. I’ve talked to other people who’ve worked in a target Starbucks at other locations and shared similar experiences with management not giving a shit. I enjoyed making drinks and liked that aspect of my job and still miss making drinks but the whole incident has really scarred me.
iwannacry692 points9m ago
Awe im so sorry they treated you that way, Make sense i always see people saying how they hate target and how they do not care. Ill probably apply to a barns and nonble one :)
Neat-Ad-13673 points9m ago
I believe you can be fired from corporate for working at tarbucks. It’s a conflict (or so I was told when I was hired and was still working at my licensed store.)
Vrylin13339 points9m ago
I have never heard of that before. There's been many times where it was all shifts in the floor and we're like, "This is a very expensive shift for starbucks" 😂
AbigailAbask20 points9m ago
It's a district based thing. However to my knowledge there should be district calls going on tomorrow with higher-ups (Regional Director, and regional operations VP potentially.) In that call they should give a concrete answer on whether or not that's going to be put into place in the beginning of November. I was told this was NOT meant to be shared with anyone other than ASMs and SMs until after something is finalized in order to avoid unnecessary panic, but obviously nothing stays a secret at Starbucks especially when it comes to messing with people's money.
bottlehalffull18 points9m ago
We have 3 SSVs most days, we wouldn't get minimal hours if we weren't allowed to work together unless they fired or demoted a few of us.
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]10 points9m ago
We have 6 shifts and my manager just told me we can’t pick up coverage shifts anymore? I don’t even know what’s going on 😭
bottlehalffull16 points9m ago
I mean that's only going to last so long and obviously a policy made up by someone who's never worked in a store. When coverage shifts call out who do they think is coming in a majority of the time? I know at our store the shifts are almost always willing to take the shift.
sten4512 points9m ago
Corporate toady who is making 120,00k a year “Look master, I can save Howard 6 dollars, am I a good reek?”
djdementia1 points9m ago
maybe your district is short on labor hours and needs to make up for it.
aaronbdancer13 points9m ago
It’s something they’re just now talking about btw so it’s company wide
xthefabledfox11 points9m ago
If that’s the case they’re gonna have to demote a bunch of us at my store lol. We open together a lot because nobody else wants to work that early
angryairheadaries8 points9m ago
i’ve heard talk of it but i’m guessing it’s cus they don’t wanna pay us the $19+/hr that they promised they’d pay us… their excuse is that we aren’t always keyholders when we work together, but we aren’t really just baristas in terms of knowledge so i honestly think it’s super unfair
edit: i didn’t hear anything about the coverage shifts so that might be a rumor/something someone made up 😅
MattyScrant6 points9m ago
I haven’t heard this happening either but it’s probably an area/district thing. Some districts within an area, region, and district perform higher than others so this might be SBUX just trying to cut costs.
Either way, it’s bullshit. I’m in the middle of interviews for ASM and if I actually get it, I will never schedule an SSV alone in the morning or afternoon unless I have no choice.
Say there’s only one opening SSV and two baristas but the SSV oversleeps. Scheduling another shift both minimizes the chance of the day going off the rails and distributes the workload (for an order, counts, pull etc.) evenly so one shift can be on the floor while the other focuses on shifty shift shit.
Apprehensive-You52611 points9m ago
You my friend know how management works. I’ve worked at the siren for a few years and the biggest problem I see not scheduling enough people sometimes were down two people and have to beg people to come in. Or we close early because only two people in the store.
Before the siren I worked at a local grocery store and we had the same issue. Not enough people scheduled for coverage then had to call and beg people to come in which didn’t work usually people already made plans(which is totally reasonable)but there if you didn’t say yes they’d never call you in again for extra coverage. When you’re averaging 8 hours a week for a lot of employees no wonder people would work a few weeks then quit.

There’s this thing called “shift compliment.” It’s basically the percentage of your labor that did supposed to go to shifts.
We’ve been dealing with this problem recently. Supposedly it’s always been a thing, but it wasn’t a problem at my store until 6 months ago. When I first got promoted we had like… 12 shifts. Now we have 6 and our DM is on my SM about how many hours were using
morningchampagne2 points9m ago
This is the correct answer and the DMs give the SMs targets. It’s the % of the time that a shift is on the floor. Targets are around 120-180%.
Intelligent_Wash90005 points9m ago
News to me. My sm is working on having 3/4 shifts per day time and hasn’t said we can’t pick up coverage shifts
Intelligent_Wash90004 points9m ago
Also on every schedule for the next 3 weeks, I have exactly one keyholder shift lol if that’s any consolation
Majestic-Lie-5884 points9m ago
It might be district by district but it’s the same in mine.
Direct_Let90553 points9m ago
Starbucks makes too much money to be trying to “cut costs” it’s annoying.
Wonderful-Put-59723 points9m ago
When the holidays roll around and they're desperate for anyone to pick up a shift, that policy will be forgotten. Just remember, it's a lopsided relationship.
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]1 points9m ago
Makes me sad that they act like they care about us
Have_Donut3 points9m ago
Well if that’s an actual policy they are going to be saying bye to a lot of their employees.
rusted173 points9m ago
Must depend on district. I can’t imagine my store running w out or usually 2-3 ssvs per shift
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]3 points9m ago
Are they allowed to do it?
piratedashel12 points9m ago
Shift complement is a thing. I’ve not heard anything about them barring us from working together, though. Your store or district might be cracking down on it.
gingergal-n-dog4 points9m ago
I was in the room for the shift meeting yesterday (doing tips). Mgr says a new goal for fiscal year 2023 involves focusing on the shift complement ratio at each store. My store runs a 1.6 and needs to bring it down to a 1.2. The overlap will primarily occur with the mid shift position. This is not a term I've heard before as I am present for meetings occasionally and have worshipped the siren for nearly 3 tears..years. the shift compliment is a ratio of how often ssv are working coverage hours together. It's 1 more metric to drive sm and dm crazy.
verdeuce2 points9m ago
Um what
mama_bibi2 points9m ago
If they do decide to make it a company wide rule then they will be screwing themselves over for multiple different reasons. One of the more important ones being that when we hire new shifts and their "training" is done and there is no other shift there with them while they are still new...its just going to cause more stress on everyone and in turn it'll cause more turnover
kaynist2 points9m ago
lmao id like to see them try our shifts are somehow like 40% of our staff
AdIll79462 points9m ago
They are probably watching your shift complement. It’s a labor number that basically averages the amount of keyholders in the building at a time. Most aim for about 1.6-1.8, this includes your manager and all time they work off the floor too. It’s a bit of an odd one, but this would be a way to lower that number if it runs high. They’ll move on to something else soon.
trentablondelatte2 points9m ago
we have like 3 shifts sometimes 4 work at the same time
rlogranite2 points9m ago
I doubt that's true but the DM could be cracking the whip
HailLucypurr1 points9m ago
Yep. My SM told us all that. Which sucks.
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]5 points9m ago
I don’t know how I’m supposed to pay for rent now. Literally randomly telling us this bs isn’t fair? I’ve worked at Starbucks for 3 years. Always averaging at LEAST 30hrs. I thought I liked Starbucks but they really don’t give a fuck. They only care about their money.
Gameb0i61 points9m ago
Yeah. That’s what my manager told me. But it’s only cuz we have too many shifts. But one is leaving so things will be going back to normal in a few days
kristis32331 points9m ago
Ok thanks
kristis32331 points9m ago
What does that mean? Coverage
Alternative-Crew-229 [OP]3 points9m ago
A barista shift I guess..? Not a key holder
aee781 points9m ago
Half my shifts this week were coverage, so I don't think it's a company wide policy.
