coaching/advice for a shift supervisor (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by angryairheadaries
i was a borrowed partner on a shift this morning; i was also the opening shift. another shift came in to take over for me, but i was still coverage on the floor. this shift then decided to send FOUR breaks at once, 2 10’s and 2 30’s, while we were still pretty busy… what is the best way to let that partner know that as much as the thought was there, that’s not the best idea?
i thought about just letting their sm know, i’m way closer to them than i am the shift, but i also felt like it’s kinda rude to go above someone like that. but i know some people don’t appreciate coaching/criticism in the moment, but i also didn’t really have time to say anything while it was happening… i just need y’alls opinions lol

"hey! i noticed you sent 4 people off the floor at the same time. what was your thought process on doing that?" give them space to answer. "so, when we send that many people on break at once, we end up overworking the people who are left and really understaffing the floor. the line built up, the mobile orders were on a 15+ minute wait (etc etc, whatever the consequences were) and baristas were really struggling. our best practice is to send 1-2 partners on break at once so we still have enough floor coverage for the business."

you can also pull up the sales numbers. if there were 50 orders during a half hour but only 3 people on the floor, you're understaffed. the rule of thumb is 1 partner per 10 customers per half hour.

I wouldn’t bother if it’s not my store. Yeah that’s annoying, but it won’t affect you in the future. They probably will just be upset you said anything anyway since you’re not one their partners. And also I would never pick up a shift at that store again lol

I personally wouldn’t say anything, someone else from that store is bound to also have a problem with it and I think they’d probably take it better from a coworker they already know? It’s completely up to you but I’d probably let it go.

that’s what i was thinking, too… i might just let the sm know if she asks me anything about it but i was not gonna worry about it. i just didn’t know if it wouldn’t help not saying anything or not. i wish i’d just said something in the moment.

SSV here too. I usually close/mid and trade off with opening SSV and I’ll see that they are extremely behind on breaks. Then for hand off I’ll have to double or even triple break and switch the play to “go mode”

Not too sure if the full context but maybe they felt the need to do that because breaks were running too late in the day.

Ngl though 4 breaks all at once seems a bit excessive considering that it was still pretty busy…
