12 hour policy…. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by reddituser0226
So we all know that we need to be working at least 12 hours per week and have at least 18 hours available per week at this point. I currently have friday, saturday, Sunday available (all day availability) which is close to 30hours available (but we technically can only be scheduled 8hours per day so I have 24hours I could potentially work if scheduled 8hr shifts those 3days)
My new manager tells me they love me and calls me one of their best employees, but told me last week if i cant pick up shifts during the week or other stores im probably going to be separated from the company. Also for context I usually worked 15-20hours a week before this policy with this SAME schedule.
Now, for the next three weeks, im scheduled (w1)10hours, (w2)8hours and then (w3)4hours
Any suggestions? I am a full-time college student and I have been working for Starbucks for almost 3 years with no problem with just working Friday-Sundays (and occasionally picking up a midday shift if I can)

this is a union-busting tactic, unfortunately. they push out good employees so they can hire people who are more desperate for hours and are less likely to challenge unfair labor practices.

I’m in the same boat right now… I haven’t been threatened with separation, but I am a full time student and I can only work literally the bare minimum. I’m honestly thinking about leaving after this semester. I love working for Starbucks, but it just doesn’t fit in my life right now.

literally quit because i wanted to work 5-10 hours because i’m a full time student and it wasn’t possible

The 12 hour requirement is for the SMs when they schedule you. The only thing that is required of you is that you have 18+ hours of availability. If this continues, I'd first ask them why they aren't scheduling you properly, and then go to the DM
CrystalEmbers1 4 points 9m ago
I definitely agree. The SM’s are supposed to schedule 12+ hours for their partners. As long as you have that availability, you’re totally fine. If your manager doesn’t want to work things out with you and be understanding, talk to the DM. They have to go by the rules and there shouldn’t be an issue. Your other solutions would be to either transfer to another nearby store (I know that a lot of stores are looking for people with weekend availability as well, at least that’s what I’ve heard) or explore other options if you’re willing to.

I’m fully available all day Thursday-Monday and I still got 10.25 hours this week LOLOLOL

it is so annoying…i have a 1 PM to 5 PM availability on Monday through Thursday. On Friday and the weekend I have open availability, yet I still only get like 15 hours a week.

Most of the stores I’ve worked at have a really hard time finding closers. When I take time off, it’s usually a struggle to get my shifts covered and I have to call another store to get someone to borrow. The 1p-5p (or later) is often surprisingly difficult to find people to work it.

The only way this would be reasonable is if your store somehow has a lot of people working weekends.

Other than that some managers are just genuinely garbage at scheduling though and maybe she doesn’t realize she could be doing a better job of it (even if it’s obvious to you and should be obvious to her). In that case talking to her and asking if she could schedule someone who works on of your available days during the week would help?

The store could also be tight on hours I guess, in which case she’s prioritizing people with more availability because it’s easier for her.

Those are the three options I can think of. You can’t really do a lot about it other than talk to her and try to get a direct answer about why you’re scheduled for so few hours.

And as a general statement about expectations, I am starting to feel like this requirement is a way for store managers to lowkey fire someone. She’s not required to schedule you 12 hours if your availability doesn’t meet her scheduling needs. It doesn’t really sound like she’s trying to fire you to me but people always respond to these saying the 12 hour thing is a requirement for store managers, as if the company would really do that. I think you should try to get a direct answer from her about why you’re scheduled for so few answers. Just really go for a direct answer too. If she tries to sidestep it just press the issue.

I dont get it, seems like a plethora of stores are short-handed and baristas are busting their ass but then corporate is trying to cut people and the number of partners on each shift.
lewabwee 3 points 9m ago
Oh yeah corporate is always trying to cut labor. It’s absolutely shitty. I won’t defend corporate. Store managers are stuck between a rock and a hard place (even when they’re good competent managers) but corporate fucking sucks.

if they can allow minors to work according to their school schedules and still get 12+ hours, they should let you as well. if your manager is considering termination because of your schedule, transfer to a new store. stores are always looking for new people, especially for the crazy weekend shifts, and you shouldn’t be forced out like that because you’re pursuing a college education.
