What do y’all think about the new availability policy? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PriorComfortable216
Honestly to me it sounds like a easy way to quiet fire partners who don’t have the availability. I know that some of us who are under here are full time students, and so am I, so getting that availability can be hard. I know my availability is at 29 hours a week but I’m only getting scheduled around 14.5. I’ve also seen people say it’s a union busting tactic which I also completely agree with, and I’ve also seen some of my other partners be let go from this recent availability change.

Everything this company does lately is a union busting tactic tbh

Thankfully my store is already unionized, so the new policy doesn't apply to us, otherwise we would lose some wonderful partners who are students or have other jobs etc.

It’s a good idea. It’s a win for baristas who rely on the job to pay bills and it’s a win for the company.
The people who worked 6 hour weeks always have very strict availability that everyone else has to work around, meaning everybody else is getting weirder schedules to fit around them.

Training is slower and less effective for once a week baristas as well. I literally have never seen a once a week barista that was even remotely good on bar.

The stores need a level of flexibility so people can take PTO and such and still have coverage. While the extra spending cash is nice for the people who want to work only a few hours per week, it is to the detriment of literally everyone else.

You just have to be available at least 18 hours a week. If your SM doesn’t schedule you all
of them or you request days off, that’s not held against you. It doesn’t make sense to have all those people who only work 1 or 2 days a week when there’s others who’d like to be getting more hours.
Beg1nAga1n 13 points 9m ago
No, I don’t feel like this.

We have plenty of reasons to unionize. Asking people to be available x amount of hours to be GUARANTEED x amount of hours? Hell yes. I’m all for that. This isn’t a bad thing.

I think it’s more along the lines of while it’s letting people go, it’s also punishing people who need to take time off, which was in the update I posted not too long ago. It’s not exactly the best way to do it bc now it seems like people can’t get sick or take time off if they don’t have sick time or they don’t get approved for an LOA. I’m not trying to argue with you, I’m just saying this is how I see it.

The policy isn't that you have to work 12 hours every week. The policy is that STORE MANAGERS should be SCHEDULING you 12 hours a week.

SMs have been twisting it to require you to work a minimum of 12 hours a week, but the actual policy has 1 part requirements for you (have 18 hours availability) and 1 part requirements for SMs (schedule every partner at least 12 hours).

If you aren't getting 12 hours or are getting threatened for being sick or not picking up extra hours, that's your SM being a dick. it's not the policy or the intent behind the policy.

Thank you for clarifying, that’s why I came on here to see what other partners at other stores were getting to see if there was any miscommunication at all. I was really confused as to how they would penalize us for taking time off when we all have things to do.
dazedandconfusedhere 1 points 9m ago
It’s both - SMs are responsible for scheduling you the hours, but you also have to work what you are scheduled (unless using sick time)

You can’t just give away half of your shifts every week and be okay
gualmaryhondipo 1 points 9m ago
really? my SM told me it’s not a guarantee because she schedules me only like 8-10hrs.
Beg1nAga1n 1 points 9m ago
Taking time off for a week el two won’t affect this overall though.
Velvet3535 6 points 9m ago
Yesssss! I worked one day a week got months !
WAtransplant2021 2 points 9m ago
This isn't new, it used to be the norm.
PM_your-pickles 2 points 9m ago
Havent read the weekly update. Can anyone give me a summary?
caitlin_marie_gg 3 points 9m ago
i think its where you have to have 18 hours of availability and have to work at least 12 hours
PM_your-pickles 0 points 9m ago
Oh cool! I'm at like 36 at this point. Thanks for the info!

It’s difficult to schedule partners who have open availability and wants hours when there are partners who have very limited available and very specific with what time they wanna work on what day along with very specific needs of hours like being available 23 hours a week and requesting 21 hours a week and only work the slowest days of the week or only aligns third availability with the partner they like to work with. When managers accept these availability especially new hires with open availability, they get the short end of the stick and have few hours with working the worse shifts. Store managers need to be able to create a balance so that there are partners available to work in all day parts that fit the business needs and not have the trouble of understaffing a day part cause no one is able to work and if I hire someone to work specifically to cover that day part everyone is gonna lose hours cause I can’t just schedule that person one day a week dilemma.

Ok perfect I’ve heard it! Tbh I thought my manager was just saying that to keep my with a full schedule 🫤

I’m so sorry I haven’t been at work these last few days and my store is really bad about even printing out the weekly update sheets…. What are the new rules regarding availability ???
Independent-Peak-691 5 points 9m ago
All of this Information should be available to you via the IPads. There are two places to find information. My Daily and The other App (I can’t remember the name) is the one where you find Pastry case set ups. In the top of that you will find the Now Brewing and the weekly updates. Hope this helps

Oh gotcha, thank you!

I think it’s a push to reduce the amount of tenured partners that not only cost the company more money to employ but also know the bs that Starbucks puts partners through. While not every tenured partner wants to unionize, I would say the good majority that I know are interested in it. Reducing those partners in stores not only gives the company the ability to have more partners at their “beck and call” so to speak but also reduce the overall likelihood that a store would have less partners open to unionizing. Because let’s face it: this would likely increase need for new hires &if you are new you aren’t leading the union drive

100%. i have the availability, but my SM only schedules me less than 10hrs/wk so i asked her why considering the new policy. she said that it’s so people who work less than 12hrs/wk wouldn’t want to work there. so i feel like she basically told me why do i want to work there considering i get less than 12 hours. annoying that the policy only goes one way. if i have to have a minimum availability, then they should have to have a minimum amount of hours but apparently it’s not a guarantee of hours🤷‍♀️
