Work my wage (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by linseeded
Had a coworker say “idgaf, I’m working my wage” the other day and it’s stuck with me, because I get paid 15/hr to be put under extreme stress, make drinks that cost half of what I’m paid in an hour and deal with THE shittiest most rude customers (I’ve worked customer service 8+ years and Starbucks takes the cake for cultivating the worst customer base with the make the moment right shit… not to mention the junkies that trash the bathrooms. We’ve found crackpipes! Needles! I’ve cleaned up human piss). My store is 3rd quickest in the REGION but the only thing that that means is that my MANAGER who doesn’t do SHIT on the floor gets a fat bonus. What the fuck, honestly? I really don’t get anything for being quicker, do I? I’m really tempted to start working my wage too. Thoughts?

Listen, I try hard when I'm vibing and I work my wage when I'm not. It just depends on the day. But yeah, essentially we don't really get anything for working harder aside from maybe some extra labor hours. It's funny because we can't even get a good Google review or customer connection scores to change when we have an awesome week but the second Linda is offended because we are out of white mocha we get a nasty one. It's tiring. And as someone who has worked for Starbucks for a while, the managers really are the ones who get the credit.

The thing that helps me out is I have a good manager and I always have good ASMs so I don't get as bothered by it as people who work for less deserving SMs.

15 isn’t livable. We’ve been fighting for 15 for so long that 15 isn’t even the base amount we should be paid, not to mention Starbucks could seriously give two shits about any of us at all. I work how I’m treated and paid by corporate. Want me to go above and beyond? Pay me for it.

Yeah I get that. But the way I think about is if your keeping up an efficient pace your less likely to be stressed. How many times have you been stuck on window with someone who’s slow at bar which then leads to more entitled rude customers? Makes life easier for your coworkers when your good at your job.
[deleted] 9 points 9m ago
This does also make sense. I had someone on bar that at one point took 5 minutes to make 2 drinks while I was window. The amount of uncomfortable forced conversations I was having per car stressed me out lol.

I know I'm supposed to stay planted but I hopped off window and started making drinks because bar partner just like . . . wasn't moving at all. (I wasn't sassy with them about it or anything tho because idk what they were going through that day mentally)

yes, i think like this but only working your wage for the stuff that impacts customers and your manager. i’m gonna try hard and keep up with things that would screw over my coworkers if i didn’t, not trying with anything else.

I think THIS sums up why I’ve been torn, because I care about my coworkers but f the company and custies. THANK YOU for your input

That last sentence is EVERYTHING

Omg.... you all must work at my store!!! Crack pipes and all🤣🤣 all kidding aside. You/ WE baristas make the wheel turn!! Have courage, my fellow cogs in the wheel!!💛💛
Broad-Flounder-4971 3 points 9m ago
I always remind my fellow baristas to work their wage. I ask “if I asked you to make a hundred drinks and bust your ass for an hour and then said I would only pay you $15 to do it, would you do it?” And suddenly people are like WHAT?!

I don’t stress about my job because I’m not paid enough to. I have fun and make drinks and do what I can to assist my coworkers, but I’m not going to cry over slower times or not making enough connections. 🥰
linseeded [OP] 2 points 9m ago
Yeah I’m not gonna try to make customer connections anymore tbh. Too awkward and weird

I totally can understand the perspective. Regardless of it's truth, at the end of the day, what type of person are you? That's what you have to live with at the end of the day.

Also, rhetorical question. No answer necessary, just food for thought.
vivnaomi 6 points 9m ago
It does not matter the type of person you are, for even if you are the brightest and most cheerful person around, it is very easy to burn out when your needs aren’t being met and you essentially have to rely on a singular job to keep yourself from starving. It’s not sustainable.
somewheredaydreaming -1 points 9m ago
If you don't find the job sustainable then it's time to move on.
vivnaomi 4 points 9m ago
Oh you must not understand. Good luck to you
somewheredaydreaming -3 points 9m ago
Given your first reply I don't think you do either. Best of luck as well 😇

This is where you look at connections and promotions. By stepping up and working hard to support your team you’re able to earn more. You can become a shift, ASM, SM. If you are not performing your expected duties, you can be separated. Starbucks has decent benefits, the college alone is a great incentive to work harder because even if you just work 20 hours a week, you’re able to collect ~10k worth of school before you pay taxes on it…which you can use to leave Starbucks and enter the work force in the field you’d prefer. Situations are all you make of it.
My store is by a court house and so I have all types of people come through, You can make connections and figure out what other people have majored in and what type of jobs they have. When I worked at my last store, it was a DT and I saw a great majority of my old coworkers from the hospital I worked at-/—and it made me smile because while I was having fun and vibing (and getting paid more for ‘less’) they looked miserable (whether they were heading in or going home…) and honestly it’s what you make of it. If you’re trying to promote, you’ll need situations in which you’ve helped your team, this is why “acting your wage” isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Example:
This week my manager was off because she took vacation, but had to help family evacuate (from the hurricane). During this period I had a DM meeting in my store and baristas were doing the bare minimum (calling out and not doing the duties necessary). I stepped up and took care of things, was also able to talk to my DM about advancement opportunities as I’m about to graduate with my degree from ASU. She gave me detailed information about what I could do and how to make the moves to promote. By connecting with customers this week, I was able to talk and joke and have fun getting to know my customers in a deeper sense (one woman bought our ASL cups because I told her about the artists that Starbucks was able to reach out to and the art they did), I got to talk about coffees and our sustainability approach and how we’re ethically sourced and some coffees are Fairtrade certified, and even talked about how some locations have worked on sustainability in their regions with bamboo utensils instead of plastic!
Starbucks as a job is what you make it, it’s when you recall that it’s a multimillion dollar corporation with advancement opportunities that makes the difference. Viewpoint is everything.

Bootlicking to the highest degree right here lol.
Affectionate_Fart 0 points 9m ago
Or I’m advancing myself and getting a higher paid job?

Your first few sentences reflects the main concern. It doesn’t matter how hard you work. Your wage is not based on Merit. No matter how many orders you take, lattes you make, or floors you mop, your wage does not reflect that. I can be the most cheerful and happy person that shows up to work on time performing all necessary duties, but my wage will not reflect that. The hard worker will get paid the same wage as those who put in minimal effort. The OP is coming to that realization and is perhaps feeling burnt out because of it.

I don’t want anyone to need to work egregious hours just to afford rent and keep food on the table. Shelter, food, water, and clothing is the bare minimum needed for survival. The government isn’t doing enough to maintain that minimum. They put it in the hands of corporate entities, and they’re not doing anything to maintain that survival either. Hell they don’t have to because the system’s focus is eternal profit, not making sure those needs are met.

If you want to talk about perspective, try being a 4.0 full-time student, part-time worker, who’s showing up to work on time doing everything necessary, entertaining customers giving them exactly what they want with a big grin while maintaining your work area and helping when needed. Then to hear, a war break out over an ocean and a couple continents that makes gas double. So now you gotta put a whole days worth of work into your gas tank every 1.5-2 weeks. Then you gotta hope your family relationship doesn’t implode because if it does you’ll have nowhere to sleep. Can’t rent because landlords want your income to be 3x the rent and you don’t have credit because you’re still new to being an adult.
Get that 250-350$ check that’s supposed to last 2 weeks.
Save 100$
Then go to work with a happy attitude.
Then finish school with all Ts crossed.
And have a maybe 20$ left over. Rise and repeat.

My wage doesn’t reflect the work I put in and doesn’t support the simple life I live outside of work. But hey s/o those oil companies that made RECORD PROFIT even after they spent a bit extra because of the war abroad.

All about Perspective.

This sounds like a great thing for you! (Again, like you said, viewpoint is everything and this is yours.) Not sure why people are being negative about this.

I’m not sure either, maybe they’re just super against corporations, but like you pick your poison. It’s like healthcare as well. Academic programs are great, but there isn’t a lot of money there for employees, where as private foundations are more likely to pay. (Look at travel (contract workers) verses the “typical staff employees”.
