Training my first barista next week!! Tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I wasn’t trained thoroughly but didn’t really need to be since I had some precious experience. What are some tips you have for first time trainers? What are some things you wish your trainer taught you?

my biggest tip for barista trainers is to realize that your trainee is going to forget, like, everything you teach them - and that’s not because you’re a bad trainer, it’s because there’s so much information being thrown at them in a short time period. also, you’ll probably discover there are some things you’ve forgotten or you didn’t realize standards had changed.

obviously you’ll still give them the information, but instead of emphasizing memorization, I’d encourage questions (even on things you’ve already practiced! and even after they “finish” training!) and show them resources, such as where to look for beverage recipe cards (iPad > store resources or the POS sidebar). also, introduce them to the other baristas they’ll be working with, especially SSVs/barista trainers/experienced baristas who will be particularly helpful if they have questions when you’re not around.
