Applied for a shift online (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mekayla96
Finally just did it myself. I’ve been going back and forth with managers being like ‘yeah you have the next spot’ and then they hire someone else. Just stringing me along.
So I applied for the position online.
Is that bad 😵‍💫

That’s officially wha you’re supposed to do, then your SM is supposed to approve your application and schedule you with an interview with another SM before the decision is finally approved. Supposedly, this prevents favoritism and ensures everyone gets a fair shot, but in reality it makes it so much more difficult for current partners to be internally promoted while external hires can apply and go ahead without any of the paperwork, pre-approval, PDPs, etc…

Should i let my sm know I applied? We have an temp sm right now bc our previous one quit so I don’t know what to do

I would let them know to keep an eye out for your application.

I just got hired as a barista. I spent the last 8 years as a shift at a restaurant and I applied as both a shift and a barista. I was a little hesitant to take it as it kind of feels like a demotion. It feels super weird not being in a position of authority as well as having no clue what I'm doing because I'm use to being in charge and having the answer most of the time, but I guess that's another story. Anyway, I'm kind of worried I might have made a mistake and should have applied at more stores as a shift. I know a bunch of people at different stores that could get me interviews, but I just took the first one I was offered as a barista as it was a drive thru only store and the pay was the same as my last job. This store has 6 shift managers already and the GM made it seem pretty difficult to become a shift because of that and that there were already a few people who are way ahead of me wanting to be shift managers. I hope I didn't fuck up taking this position.

You can continue to apply to shift positions in different stores but all stores always have a barista position and a shift position posted, it doesn't necessarily mean they actually have a position open.

In my area shift positions are posted to My Daily, it's on the ipad and everyone has access.

In the meanwhile get grounded in the barista role and standards, and then ask to be a barista trainer, that's usually next step becoming a shift. Maybe ask one of your shifts to mentor you, that would be good for both of your developments. Make sure your dm knows your eager to advance and willing to transfer to do so, in my district they'd much rather promote from within.
