Anxiety about calling in sick - support? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dontcry2022
I made a post yesterday and ended up not calling out bc I really hoped I would sleep off my sore throat. Then when I woke up, it still hurt, but it was too close to opening and I didn't wanna mess opening the store up by calling in, so I took some cough drops and ibuprofen and fortunately felt better for 75% of my shift.

I'm supposed to open again tomorrow and I just have anxiety about calling out bc my attendance hasn't been great. I was significantly late to opening TWICE last week and got written up, which was not fun and I felt horrible about it all. Then this past week, I swapped schedules with 1 person bc I was mentally unwell and it was started to affect me physically.

So now I'm just like ugh, they're gonna start to have this perception of me that I am unreliable or don't want to work. But I'm literally at urgent care right now and regret going in today bc I'm sure it just made things worse.

I also have anxiety about asking other people to cover for me, because I've asked the other regular opening barista to cover me a few times over the past couple months (she's only switched me shifts once, but still, asking is annoying)

if you’re sick, you’re not required to find coverage for your shift. it’s in the handbook. you need to let your sm/asm know asap. the sooner you let them know, the quicker they can find coverage! it’s not your fault you’re sick!!

i get the anxiety aspect, too; i’m the same way. i was on a 6-month final for attendance so i get it. but just because of that write-up, you can’t sacrifice your physical health. it’s not worth it.

I know our store is at a weird point because we’re writing up people for being late and calling off, but there’s another aspect that we’re understaffed in the fact that if someone is sick and can’t work they have no one to cover for them. So, if you try contacting all the people who can cover your shift and they say No, then when your SM talks to you, just say, “Hey, the problem is we’re not staffed enough. I contacted everyone, and no one could cover. Can you hire more openers?”
