PLEASE DONT COME TO WORK IF YOURE SICK.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nraveles11
Please, I beg you. I have gotten sick twice (once currently) from people thinking it’s funny to be sick at work. My shift was joking bout having a sore throat and how he didn’t feel good but was coming in anyways. Now 3 people are sick because of him, even tho we were taking precaution. I’m fucking done with this. My mom has MS and Lupus and I’m doing all I can and not I gotta like mini quarantine in my room just cuz some asshat thought it was funny to come to work sick.
Please. I get if you have to pay bills. Double/triple mask up but don’t be coughing over everyone and joking about it.

What I don't understand is like . . . we get written up or whatever if we don't do the sign in sheet but then people are just allowed to be working sick even though the sign in sheet is supposed to prevent that. How does any of that make sense?
I used to work sick all the time before covid out of pure guilt but now understanding how sick other people can get because of my actions, I absolutely will not come in with even the tiniest "cold."

It doesn’t help that most customers we’ve been having recently are super sick. They think the “medicine ball” will cure them or something. They don’t care who they’ll get sick. It’s disgusting. A woman confessed she had covid with her daughter. And decided to expose us anyway.
Snarfungus6 points9m ago
this. during peak covid especially but even now, customers will come in usually with no mask, and get medicine balls like it’s a magic “cure all” for their sickness. like no, stay home and if you really need this then uber it or something.
mariesnowelle2 points9m ago
Seriously, I've had a few customers so far coming in coughing, saying they're sick and ordering a "medicine ball" even though there's no medicine in it. It's frustrating, like dont come in and put my health at risk bc you cant stay home
bestowcurse18 points9m ago
Honestly, I'm not going to work while sick but it doesn't erase the fact that my managers have made excuses For me to come in. "Oh it's just allergies" "how do you know you're REALLY sick" ect
I've come in with a 102 degree fever and chills and I still had my shift try to figure out a reason to get me to stay at work lol

This is exactly why yesterday when I was feeling bad at work (sore throat, but no fever) I didn't ask my SSV to send me home. She's the type to just be like "oh I have been feeling bad too some with the weather, you just have to push through"
Nraveles11 [OP]3 points9m ago
Thissss
broookeee_9 points9m ago
did this the other day . seriously regret it😭 i wanted to call out but it was too late and i decided to come in and push through, pretend i was fine . after 3 hours i seriously felt like shit and told my SSV and got sent home early. its best to prioritize yourself even if you feel bad about not showing. I said I wasn’t trying to spread something around to which he said ‘well, that’s also kind of the point’ as in yeah wtf don’t come in! so yeah, i feel really bad. I’d feel inconsiderate for not showing but it’s also inconsiderate to subject yourself to others and get them sick so, above all I should’ve just said it from the getgo. hopefully the people I was working with are fine🤦♀️💔

I went into work with a mild sore throat yesterday morning, thinking it was just a cold. I wear a KN95 every shift. My sore throat got BAD as the day went on, turns out I have Covid. Y'all have no idea how fucking stupid I feel. Stupid and guilty.
That being said, management really needs to create a culture where calling out when sick is not only acceptable, but encouraged. I didn't call in because I'm an opener, so finding coverage would be a pain, and I thought since I didn't have a fever and could pass the symptom check, I should just tough out my little sore throat, especially since I always wear a mask.
I also feel extra stupid because back during the summer, my trainer got me sick by coming in with a sore throat herself. She swore it was allergies, but I went to the doctor and had to get some kind of antibiotic for whatever it was.
Also - fuck the Siren for ending Covid sick pay when not only does the CDC say we must isolate for 5 days, but Starbucks itself literally will not allow me to work for 5 days.

Tell that to my boss who was scheduling me 30 hours a week while I had chronic bronchitis (which lasted 2 months because I was being overworked between the job and being a full time student).
This was exactly one year ago as of this week and irritated me so much. I was given one day off, and then was expected to keep coming in even when I had a violent cough and voiced my concerns about safety to him…
But also, I’m a full time college student. I NEEDED my job. Ridiculous
Nraveles11 [OP]3 points9m ago
Yeah your boss is a dick tbh
2166K2 points9m ago
Extra points for when he called me selfish/stupid for visiting my aging grandma on a week where I wasn’t scheduled…. And for when he failed to pay me for 2 shifts that I’d worked.
Yeah he was an asshole. Half the reason I left the store.
Torirock106 points9m ago
if u gotta pay bills use ur protected sick time liiiike 🙄
iStealSharpies5 points9m ago
bruh I had a green bean come in, get a mark out & then proceeded to tell us that she’s calling out for her shift that day while at the register. If you’re okay enough to come get a sugar bomb drink then you’re okay enough to work. And if you’re not okay enough to work then you should be at home and not spreading your germs. 🤦🏼♀️
gothlene-3 points9m ago
You don't know why she's calling out
iStealSharpies5 points9m ago
She said “I’m not feeling good, I’m calling out”
gothlene0 points9m ago
It could've been a mental thing , not always physical
iStealSharpies4 points9m ago
It very well could have but she also called out the day before with a “cold”. I really don’t mind when people call out when it’s necessary(ie. sick, mental day, family emergency), but for someone to come get a mark out when they called out that same day is a dick move in my opinion.
wok3less4 points9m ago
i wish i could lol. no coverage, guilted for life and not believed if i call out. and i need the money. agreed it shouldnt be this way but :/
Lightheaded_gamer3 points9m ago
It does not help that they removed the quarantine pay….
These situations will always be like a double edge sword. Either work sick and cause infection to everyone or be at home sick worried about not getting money to survive after recovery (oh and being bashed by management for calling out).
It’s like no one learned from Covid at all.. 😥
Chromosomes233 points9m ago
As a SSV your sick your sick don’t forget to put in your sick hrs we have them for a reason. It’s our responsibility to find coverage for your shift if your sick.
Nraveles11 [OP]1 points9m ago
Exactly 👏🏽
Jazzlike_Giraffe_1421 points8m ago
I just got fired yesterday for being sick for too long after two rounds of antibiotics and steroids... there is no winning with Starbucks
Nraveles11 [OP]1 points8m ago
…that’s literally like lawsuit material tbh. That’s absolutely fucked up
Jazzlike_Giraffe_1421 points8m ago
They pull shit like that cause they know that most employees can't afford to hire lawyers and actually retaliate. It's messed up :(
Great-Requirement4761 points9m ago
at my store they force us to come unless we have a fever over 102. i had a low grade fever and was still told to come in because their was no one to call to come in.
Nraveles11 [OP]2 points9m ago
Bruh isnt that literally illegal
Great-Requirement4761 points9m ago
i’m a minor too, to make it even better
Veloci-Tractor-4 points9m ago
not like i have a choice
Nraveles11 [OP]2 points9m ago
I get sometimes times are tough and things have to be done, but it’s better to not just keep yourself safe but others safe. It’s not just your health on the line. You never know who your fellow baristas could bring a sickness home to. A sick grandparent, a mom with a disease, maybe the barista themself could get super sick and fall majorly ill.
Again I get sometimes you don’t have a choice but that’s why we have sick time. Use it because you still get money from it.
Veloci-Tractor2 points9m ago
I have rent to pay and sick time doesn't cover it.
You are saying this from a point of privilege. Not everyone has that luxury.
Nraveles11 [OP]1 points9m ago
“You are saying this from a point of privilege” you’re kidding me right? I have shit to pay too. I’m in medical debt. I at least have the human decency to think about how my SPREADABLE sickness could affect others.
How is it a luxury or a privilege for my mother to have autoimmune issues that bringing a simple cold home could kill her? How is it privileged for me to have severe asthma and getting a cold could cause pneumonia or other serious illnesses? Oh yeah that TOTALLY privileged when I gotta fucking watch every step I take to not bring home something that could cause issues at home while a shift at my store is LAUGHING about being sick. Totally privileged. Get out of here with that BS.
You sound like some antivaxxer or antimasker. “Well I gotta work so it’s your issue if you get sick sorry”
Veloci-Tractor0 points9m ago
Lol yeah you're reeking of it
If you're not facing eviction hush

CrimsonKabuki-25 points9m ago
How about I do it anyway
[deleted]6 points9m ago
Why, though? I understand that people are stressed about hours and stuff but we do get sick time and you may as well use it if you have it and take the day off to get better.
gothlene2 points9m ago
What a garbage person
CrimsonKabuki-1 points9m ago
You’re the one on reddit calling people garbage without knowing anyone else’s situation lmao
Torirock100 points9m ago
ur the one saying you’d get people sick (which could be rlly bad especially if they’re immuno compromised) yet being like “u don’t know other ppls situations!1!”
CrimsonKabuki0 points9m ago
Bro its a joke calm tf down
Torirock101 points9m ago
tell me u don’t care abt other ppl without telling me you don’t care abt other ppl
