We have a couple homeless ladies come in nearly daily (different people) with their huge dogs, they let them sit on the couch like area and then fall asleep. The dogs clearly make other customers uncomfortable when they're seated next to them, sometimes they get in their space. Mostly friendly dogs for the most part, but it's unsanitary and they leave the dog's cup of water for us to clean and others to trip over, usually it has spilt on the ground and what not. Is this allowed? Recently one of them got a cat too. i have no idea how. Anyways, is there something that should be said, or is it just something to leave alone?
(Not service dogs)

Pets (not service animals) are not allowed in Starbucks because it’s a food safety violation. At least where I live you can get in big trouble with health inspectors if they find out pets are inside of Starbucks/restaurants/anywhere that makes food and drinks.
Unknownbarista202-31 points9m ago
Our cafe is dog friendly
bigmacwithnobeef19 points9m ago
this isn’t really a rule to be decided by individual stores, it’s a health code issue
Enkeria921 points9m ago
No, it’s not. End of discussion.
salaciainthedepths1 points9m ago
It is, Starbucks in the UK are dog friendly. Not all Starbucks follow American rules. There’s more of them outside the US than in it but Americans seem to ignore that?
Unknownbarista2021 points8m ago
Did I have to say I was from the uk, why assume I’m from the US, could of just asked and I could of explained my point better, not just be blunt and try to have the last word
Enkeria921 points9m ago
Considering they lead off with “our cafe is dog friendly” with zero other context clues, it’s easy to assume that they’re in the US. I’m well aware different countries have different laws and I’m never going to set foot in a Starbucks that allows dogs in their cafe. I think it’s disgusting, with the exception of a service dog.
Unknownbarista2021 points9m ago
No literally my store is dog friendly in the uk, rules must be different
clouds18384 points9m ago
service animal or not, they aren’t allowed on the furniture, so them sleeping on the seats is not allowed.
moon_light5239 points9m ago
for a service animals— if they need to do a task they are able to go onto furniture. it depends on the handlers needs. pets are a whole other thing tho
neilgreenbreen40 points9m ago
Only service dogs are allowed in the cafe, however if they say the dogs are service dogs you can’t legally ask for proof. But sleeping is definitely not allowed per policy, and they can and should be asked to leave if they fall sleep in the cafe repeatedly
astivana44 points9m ago
In the US, you can ask if the dog is a service animal and what task(s) the animal is trained to perform. The proof of the service animal is effectively in how it acts; if it’s sleeping (supposedly) on the job, then it is not acting as a service animal and can be booted.
VenusAndSaturn22 points9m ago
A service dog sleeping or appearing to be sleeping is not grounds for removal, kicking out a service animal for that reason is not legal. Not to mention, just because it appears to be asleep doesn’t mean it isn’t still working, most service dogs when they rest or “sleep” on the job they usually don’t fully fall asleep. They tend to be more so half awake and half asleep. So if needed they can quickly get up and task, but they can also conserve their energy when they aren’t being actively needed in that moment.

I think they mean the people are sleeping
icedcarfee0 points9m ago
yeah that information is just incorrect you can’t argue if someone says it’s a service dog
Xxbeachgirl9737 points9m ago
Not related but be careful of your DM coming around as a person not actually allowed to sleep in the cafe and I believe their like an incident report on the iPad that you fill out when it occurs. One of my old store had someone falling asleep and one of my managers would wake the person up and tell them it not allowed.
booboobradley16 points9m ago
Use a burner phone and complain to health department. Then let management fuckin deal with it. That is above ur pay grade.
dontcry202211 points9m ago
Official policy is service dogs only
If you don't feel comfortable confronting them, let an SSV on duty know or tell you store manager
booboobradley9 points9m ago
Or invite everyone with dogs to show up all at once. The store is full and there is complete fucking chaos. Do this when ur dumbass dm is there to deal with it. Can someone please add more fun to this scenario? Im talking at least 20 dogs here.
Electrical_Metal_1068 points9m ago
Maybe they should let a squirrel or two loose in the cafe at the same time as these 20 dogs are around. That should liven the place up. 😂
booboobradley5 points9m ago
Yes! Thank you!
Torirock106 points9m ago
they shouldn’t be sleeping inside so
coffee-hoee5 points9m ago
this makes me sad cuz if a homeless person asks for a water and rests at one of the tables i dont think its a bad thing. like it sucks to have to kick them out because they arent harming anyone
Torirock102 points9m ago
yeah :/
Accurate-Bumblebee145 points9m ago
In Washington state, only service animals are allow in our stores, and NOT pets or emotional support animals. Service animals include dogs and miniature horses. I'm dying to see a miniature horse in my store.
MrsOceanGrown5 points9m ago
There are so many dog friendly cafes in my city. I would tell them the locations that they can do that with their dogs and kindly ask them to leave or they can enjoy our patio. I LOVE LOVE seeing dogs at work, but i also am kind of a germ freak and don’t think animals should be in restaurants or grocery stores.
Leeharp923 points9m ago
I honestly could never understand the rules. We would always ask, and of course people would say it is a service dog even though the dog is barking and growling at others. But because they said it is a service dog, we were not allowed to ask for identification or say the animal is not allowed inside. My store is in Virginia so maybe that is just Virginia law, but that was a daily problem for our store. The dogs never had vests on, they were horribly misbehaved, and the owners would always scold us for even asking if it is a service animal. We did have a couple regulars that actually had service dogs that were obviously working with their owner.
grlcbr8th3 points9m ago
Yeah the dogs aside, as other have pointed out, people aren’t allowed to be sleeping in cafe either.
testingaurora1 points9m ago
Could someone ask them kindly and respectfully to make sure the space is cleaned up once they are done? Letting the dogs up on the couches seems like it would be hell for ppl with canine allergies.
florencelovelace1 points9m ago
we have a homeless guy come in my store with a pretty big dog and we have an understanding with him that he and the dog are allowed inside as long as the dog stays off the furniture and is not disturbing other guest.
i would suggest running that by your SM that if the dogs can’t stay off the furniture then they are not allowed inside
Enkeria921 points9m ago
Kick them out! Starbucks is not pet friendly and that is NOT how a service dog is supposed to act!
Gameb0i61 points9m ago
Depends. In CA unless it’s a service animal they can’t be in the store. So when comes in I just ask them “is that a service animal?”
lolyourmadlol-12 points9m ago
Tell them homeless ladies to sleep under a bridge or go to a shelter. I don’t know why your store is letting those ladies slide, especially if they aren’t buying anything and the fact they’re bringing in stinky ass non service dogs.
different_as_can_be14 points9m ago
i understand not enjoying the situation, nor do i. but please be respectful of homeless individuals, they’re humans too who deserve some decency.
regardless, no dogs in the cafe. i’m not defending their actions, just their dignity to not be told to “sleep under a bridge”.
lolyourmadlol-3 points9m ago
Yeah I understand that but still, you can’t just walk into a store or restaurant and just sleep around and expect everyone to make an exception because you’re homeless. No customers want to eat food if there’s non service animals walking around especially if they haven’t been given a bath. I know I wouldn’t want that and neither would you.
different_as_can_be9 points9m ago
that’s not what i’m saying. i definitely think that they should sleep elsewhere, and that the dogs shouldn’t be in the cafe. they have a right to get a water if they so please, but the rules apply to everyone and they should.
my issue is with your “go sleep under a bridge” comment. it’s very inhumane and disrespectful. id say most people don’t choose to be homeless and in a situation bad enough where they think this is acceptable. all i ask is for you to have some amount of compassion, and if this were to happen in your store to be kind and polite while still following policies.
lolyourmadlol0 points9m ago
Alright I gotchu
Appropriate_Ad2862-11 points9m ago
Why don't you put down a rag first then the bowl for the dogs? This doesn't seem very human. Seems quick to judge homeless people. They don't have anywhere for their dogs to go.
