Best way to coach? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Affectionate_Fart
So I have a partner that is a little..rough.
I worked with them one morning and they often leaned against a counter, scowling with arms crossed. They were far from approachable and didn’t influence the “partner experience”. It was as though they could bite off a customers head if they approached. I’m not sure how to coach this type of behavior because you want your store and employees to at least be approachable if there are questions or if they’d like to order. Thoughts?

what what why! what you observed, what you expect, and why

someone else already said the what/what/why thing but i always try to approach them with good words first before going into what/what/why, like for example if they forget to sanitize the steaming wand i'll be like oh hey youre sequencing really well!!! just dont forget to sanitize the steaming wand between drinks (what you observed, what you expect) that way we aren't mixing dairies and non-dairies & also keeping bacteria from growing on the wand (why it's imporant to do the thing youre coaching them on)

maybe in this situation approach them by being like oh hey thanks for coming in so early/i know u must be rly tired etc etc (assuming they work in the morning, idk) and mention that while theyre probably rly tired and just wanna stand comfortably (crossing their arms, leaning back on the counter) their body language sometimes comes across like they don't wanna be approached, maybe suggest they put their hands on their hips instead of crossing their arms??

Honestly I’m fine with the leaning, but their facial expressions literally look like they’re ready to kill someone. Like face scrunched, brows furrowed…like from a customer view, I wouldn’t want to approach them.

I like to redirect that stance into a productive action. If they are leaning like that, give them a soft tasks that will take a while to do and can keep their hands busy. Lobby slides, organizing the RTD cooler, making anything, and even cleaning tasks (just don’t default to this b/c some partners view it as a punishment for leaning). Know what they like? Keep them busy on that! Good luck!
