submitted by chainsofgold
kid comes in with his mom, orders a london fog, i ring it up and his mom’s like “why is it so expensive,” and i explain it’s a tea latte so there’s steamed milk and vanilla syrup, and the mom goes “uhhh he doesn’t want some frothy milky girly thing” and i’m like okay so not the london fog, just earl grey tea, and the kid’s shouting like “london fog tea, i want tea, T E A are you stupid, do you speak english” (i’m asian), and the mom’s like insisting “tea with just water” and then i end up making his regular non frothy milky girly earl grey tea and he’s like “i want milk and sugar in it” and i just AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

i would’ve refused service after those comments
SNES182 52 points 9m ago
Yep. Fuck them.
darkwolf523 23 points 9m ago
Same. I’m Asian myself so I would say get out
dnims24 223 points 9m ago
Imagine thinking steamed milk is only for girls
chainsofgold [OP] 107 points 9m ago
the misogyny made my jaw drop
CaliforniaPotato 11 points 9m ago

Unionizestarbucks_ 2 points 9m ago
Coworker told me a pack of guys came in and one orders a frap, prompting his buddy to say "haha you ordered a f----t drink"
PTOKEN 4 points 9m ago
As a man i can confirm i’ve never had steamed milk in my salted caramel mochas

💀
linseeded 180 points 9m ago
Love how they start the racism early lmao
chainsofgold [OP] 72 points 9m ago
i’m used to the “do you speak english” cause i’m a very quiet person but it still floors me because no one asks that genuinely lmao it’s always rudely
testingaurora 55 points 9m ago
I cant imagine hearing that. That is really shameful for someone to say. I wish we could say "yes I speak English but I'm not familiar with the dumbass racist douchebag dialect". That's so rude. I love how they sprinkled the sexism in there too with the "girly" drink
chainsofgold [OP] 22 points 9m ago
oh my god i wish. i just placate myself with the thought that i’m probably better at english than them
testingaurora 12 points 9m ago
And obviously a better human. What is wrong with people, I just don't get it.
mrcupcake18 11 points 9m ago
Dude for real! Like stfu and just get the stupid ass drink. Not gonna lie when some dude asked me what kind of drinks he could get for a man. I lost it and was so done I responded with “our drinks are not gendered so I don’t understand you’re question. You can get any drink you want” like fuck off uuuuuugh lmao
chainsofgold [OP] 11 points 9m ago
fr some men seem to think they’re less masculine if they don’t get black coffee or espresso dude just get the psl no one’s judging
testingaurora 8 points 9m ago
Good response. Our drinks are non-binary sirrrrrr. Please refer to the pink drink as they/them. (With the best of intentions, please no one take this as slander towards non-binary or they/them pronouns)
Spinelise 14 points 9m ago
I'm so sorry though, that's awful. I absolutely would have denied them any service at that point and frankly, I'd strongly encourage you to write an incident report! If they come back and start behaving like that again, you'd have prior record of it. It's not right and they need to know it's not okay to act like this.
chainsofgold [OP] 11 points 9m ago
i’ll remember that for next time — my instinct tends to be to be super saccharine sweet and get them out of my hair, but i realize that contributes to people thinking they can get whatever they want which is not what i want to happen :/
AgentPsychological44 3 points 9m ago
please get your manager for these situations 😭😭 i used to have that happen and would just « im refusing to service someone who can’t speak kindly to me » and would have my lead take over, im so sorry that happens to you):
No____facex 145 points 9m ago
Please refuse service next time. You absolutely do not have to tolerate verbal abuse from anyone while working and if your SM or shift don’t back you on it then atleast you’ll know where you truly stand in your store and can decide where you want to be from there. I’m sorry that happened to you.
chainsofgold [OP] 41 points 9m ago
thanks for the advice. tbf we were down people and those in charge were swamped partially because of mistakes i was making on till so they weren’t there to witness it, but if something like this happens again i will definitely advocate for myself
No____facex 19 points 9m ago
Oh I totally understand them being swamped, ya can’t be everywhere at once! I just meant it in the sense that had you actually refused service and they wanted to speak with a manager, I would fully expect the manager to back you not only because of verbal abuse but blatant racism.
chainsofgold [OP] 15 points 9m ago
oh okay i get it! i’m sure my manager would’ve backed me on it, i’m just relatively unsure of protocol and everything since im autistic and this is my first job in a larger company, and i’ve never been in a situation where i might feel like i have to refuse service before — will definitely keep in mind i have the right to
No____facex 7 points 9m ago
My advice is to try and keep a cool head so you don’t give the asshole customer the satisfaction of seeing you be the effect of their fuckery. I’m not sure what the protocol is, I’d assume just excuse yourself and go to a manager, or just walk away if you feel like you’ll lose your cool.
long-pit 28 points 9m ago
Frothy milk. A classic feminizing drink. Prescribed to transfems as hormone replacement therapy. Frothy milk. Yes.
giftedburn0ut 10 points 9m ago
first of all, I admire how you handled this without losing it on them. second, as others have said, this is a situation in which you would have been totally within your rights to refuse service. the script I've used in the past for refusing service is "I'm sorry, but due to *insert behavior here*, which is in violation of our third place policy, I am unable to complete this transaction and will go grab my supervisor for you if you have any questions" and then grab your shift, explain what happened and that you're refusing service to this customer and why and ask them to help enforce it. as a shift, I regularly encourage my baristas to do this if they are ever treated in an aggressive manner. I will not tolerate someone treating my baristas like that and your shift leads shouldn't either ❤️
silvershsrpie 9 points 9m ago
Yeah...I just smile and think about how the kid and mom would look really good in hot water
PK_Pixel 9 points 9m ago
ngl if that happened to be anytime beyond the 3 month mark at me working at starbucks, I would have quit on the spot. "Sure!" I'd say before making my last drink and walking out lmao.
kimchichii 8 points 9m ago
Yeeeaaaa, aint no minimum wage job worth being treated or spoken to like that worth it. I would not have made it and I would’ve told them to go somewhere else.
submissivegayalien 7 points 9m ago
Some people should just be told to leave. They can fuck off to their house to make their tea.
jakhei 5 points 9m ago
the last time a customer called me stupid i stopped the transaction and told them to leave lol
obmar-belac 3 points 9m ago
“Here at Starbucks we practice gender neutrality , a drink that is milky and frothy is both for men and women, and even lizard people like yourself, and a London fog is enjoyed by both. Just like a pink drink or a cream frapp is enjoyed by all. Stop forcing the gender roles on ya boi and let him enjoy what he wants to enjoy. He will become a spectacular individual only when you don’t force your wants for masculinity on him. “

I said … <_< …. >_> … biiiiiiiiiish.
3plants 3 points 9m ago
I’m so sorry this happened! I advise that you fill out a digital incident report form (dirf)on the iPad!

It’ll prompt you on when, explain the situation and it constitutes as yelling and racially motivated. They can be dismissed next time they even show their face
RoccoSteal 2 points 8m ago
You know you have the right to refuse service right? That instance is the perfect example to exercise it. Next time, tell them you will not serve them, get your manager who will most likely back you up on this.
StickyNoteMurdercat 2 points 9m ago
Sweet one I am so sorry. People are mean & I hate it when people are mean about simple things or gatekeep drinks based on “gender” and then yell at you for something you can’t control. Also I definitely would advise talking to your shift or manager about that situation because that’s not right ESPECIALLY the racism which is super unacceptable & they can note it down. I hope besides that the rest of your shift went well. As the go to customer service front/drive person I sadly understand the frustration and hurt from getting yelled at. You’re doing great just remember that! Sometimes kindness is the best weapon to fight back with lol.
missgurll 2 points 9m ago
“frothy milky girly thing”

literally how do these people exist

i cannot wrap my head around it
spookbish69 2 points 9m ago
One lady a long time ago asked for a frap with extra whip, I asked her which one and after going back and forth for a bit she screamed “do you understand me do you speak English” (literally whiter than white btw) and that’s when my shift took over
Maddyc0709 2 points 9m ago
You do not have to tolerate behavior like that. Refuse service and ask them to leave.
Necessary_Low939 1 points 9m ago
