2 person peak with 1 ssv who was scheduled to do their pull but had to go on the floor because us 2 were dying and thats just how it was scheduled, no one called out :)

this is how my shifts are set up most the time too (i’m primarily closer svv) i want to walk out of my store most days. getting all the way through close is exhausting
coffee-and-chillll 25 points 9m ago
As a primary closer I can very much relate. Everyday making it through closing is soooo exhausting and just rough. I clock in and immediately want to clock out because we haven’t been set up for the evening at all. I feel mentally unwell for my 8 hour shift as I have to run around and serve customers while so getting the store back to an okay place to begin closing tasks. I dread it.

I understand mornings and peak are crazy and wild, but it’s nearly impossible to leave a good close for the openers if we’re having to catch up from the damage of the morning/midday all afternoon and evening. This is my last week, otherwise I truly don’t know what I’d do. I can’t do this anymore, this job feels abusive and toxic to me, and most definitely not sustainable

I can relate. Every time I come in for a close, the store is in shambles and it’s like, I know mornings are busy, but y’all can’t just hand off and leave us with an absolute mess and then complain about the close the next day. I’m so exhausted from closes feeling like mission impossible that I don’t even really care anymore.

Tell him to work a closing shift and see what it’s like :) Forreal though they love to tell us we’re overreacting when we’re upset about crappy closing is, but that’s because they don’t know what it’s like. Mornings/mids can leave the store however they want, we’re expected to make everything perfect and clean and fix all of the damage from that day, but it’s just not realistic with a smaller team and a bunch of customers. How the hell can we restock *everything* when no dishes have been done so there’s no way to make back ups and there’s a skeleton crew so we’re having to do everything yet somehow find time to restock the store.

This is the top reason my store is unionizing. Terrible scheduling is intentional--just trying to squeeze every dollar of profit possible out of us. We are going to demand also that if someone calls out and we run short-staffed, we get extra pay to cover the extra work.
welcome2mybog 4 points 9m ago
this is an excellent and very sound policy. it doesn’t even necessarily take away any money they weren’t already planning to spend (eg, 3 people working when one more is scheduled get paid $5 extra per hour the person is not there. might be more complicated with other numbers of people but $5 extra per hour seems pretty fair to me), and everyone’s doing more work than they would have been with that person there. plus we aren’t usually scheduled to be fully staffed, so when someone calls out on top of already being stretched thin, it makes it really tough to get everything done.

i would also argue for something like the power of decision for turning off mobiles/closing cafe. not having any say over these things when it gets really busy, and knowing the DM will say no if you’re even lucky enough to get ahold of them, is incredibly frustrating and makes the job so much more difficult. this is something that should have been the decision of people working on the floor from the very beginning. the DM is not there, they have no idea what’s going on in the store. i’m sure their reasoning is that partners would abuse it, but i’d much rather stores have an occasional pizza party than have to run 2 partner plays while mobiles are on. along with that, baristas should have the discretion to refuse customers and tell them to leave. i’m not sure what the exact policy is on this currently, but if someone is making us uncomfortable, especially repeatedly, we should be able to tell them not to come back.

these are my vicarious union propositions, since my store feels years away from doing it ourselves :(
Unionizestarbucks_ 2 points 9m ago
Wasn't even my store's idea, we just heard it from the nationwide union. Your suggestion about mobiles is good too, I'm gonna bring that up with the union.

What makes you say your store can't do it? We thought the same thing at first. Figured our staff was too temporary, didn't care. But when we sat down and made a list of our coworkers and asked them what they disliked about how the store was run, it turned out we had an extremely strong foundation for a union
welcome2mybog 3 points 9m ago
i’ve tried to talk to my coworkers about it a bit and most of them don’t seem interested in it at all, or will straight up repeat stuff that corporate has sent out about it verbatim. it’s been awhile since i tried to talk to anyone about it though, and we’ve had a lot of overturn recently, so i wonder if newer employees would be more open to it. all the new people are younger and i guess you could say progressive, i think they might be more open to it than our store would have been a few months ago. we do have a lot of overturn though, we’re right between two major universities, so a lot of my coworkers don’t stick around very long or this isn’t their “home” store.

weirdly enough, i think having a manager we all really get along with and respect might be something in the way of unionizing. i think a lot of people would say that we just don’t need it, you know? definitely not a lot of thinking ahead with that reasoning, but that seems to be the consensus.

i have a small handful of coworkers who i know would be pro union, but i’m not sure what % of us it would be. we also just got a new DM who sucks nads, and he’s been in the store a lot and actually listening in on our conversations, so i’m not comfortable talking about it at work like i used to be (our old DM was there maybe once every two months, new DM used to be the SM for another nearby store so he’s trying very hard to “be involved” in all the stores in the district now). we’re in a “right to work” state and in the south, so i feel like most of my coworkers have never been in a union and don’t actually know very much about them. no other stores nearby have started the union process either, so it’s hard to imagine what it would look like.

i’m gonna keep talking to people about it outside of work, and try to get a better sense of who is definitely for it, who’s on the fence, and who would for sure vote against. i also need to learn more about the process overall. i don’t expect to be at starbucks for much longer, and it’s not my main income right now, so idk if i am the best person to lead the charge, so to speak. we have a few partners who have been there a long time, one at least 10 years, so i would like to gauge their feelings about it, given that they’ve seen all the turnover and various maneuvers this company has made over the years.

congratulations to you guys for getting her done though! that’s really awesome, i’ve been so happy to see so many stores unionizing successfully. it’s honestly crazy how much has been done in just a year, and i hope i can be part of that change soon as well.

Don’t have corporate hear you

It gets better after you leave the job. I've been able to cut my dosage of anti depressants in half w/ my psychiatrist.

Sbux for 7 years did a number on my brain

Late_Pomelo_999 24 points 9m ago
Shoooooot. I’m so sorry. I feel those Saturday morning peaks
No_Ad_349 21 points 9m ago
But did you get paid for doing the workload of three people?
Unionizestarbucks_ 17 points 9m ago
This is something our union is planning to demand. No more short-staffing, but also if someone calls out and we work short-staffed, we get extra pay to cover the extra work
transpterodactyl 7 points 9m ago
Wait thats a thing??
thestoneethude 15 points 9m ago
for the last two weeks at my store, we’ve been scheduled 3-5 partner plays and so many call offs. there hasn’t been a shift that i haven’t wanted to kms after. i cry every single day at work now because i’m so burnt out. especially being on solo drive almost every single shift.
Ellectre 7 points 9m ago
“u guys did it before u can do it again!” - ur sm scheduling a 4 person play for weekend peak with that one person that may or may not show up 😭
IdoItForTheMemez 1 points 8m ago
Yeah, this is exactly why I don't break my back to make up for understaffing. They'll just keep breaking your back more and more.
graylikesoap 6 points 9m ago
me every shift 🧍🏻 i cri everitiem
Superb-Coast-780 6 points 9m ago
Wait, you’re getting more than 3 people for peak normally???!
Party-Cat-3605 4 points 9m ago
We typically have 7, no CS.
Superb-Coast-780 1 points 9m ago
😲😲😲😲
coffee-and-chillll 12 points 9m ago
Gotta love how CS seems to truly no longer be a thing anymore. Sure, I’m slammed on bar but I’ll run to get all of my syrups, ice, etc. Not blaming the team, I’m blaming corporate for this understaffing. I’d love to see them bar on a weekend morning while simultaneously having to restock.

Back in the day when we had CS things felt wild but manageable. Now, at my store at least, it’s chaos and misery constantly. Corporate knows the bare minimum labor they can get away with, but it’s hell for us. And guess what? CS is needed! Especially mornings and afternoon rushes.
Superb-Coast-780 6 points 9m ago
I haven’t had a CS in position for what seems like forever. It’s always just Go Mode.
nicolelynnejones 4 points 9m ago
We’ve been doing that so often lately, with climbing holiday numbers 🤪
NothingToSeeFolks 2 points 9m ago
How many partners do you normally have during peak?

nikkicarter1111 1 points 8m ago
That's rough, even at a Cafe only store. Can't imagine the misery of that at a DT/Cafe store
BubblesBee3 1 points 9m ago
Mine was 4 person, with 5 call outs before 9:30. I literally want to cry.
