People who like working register are the bravest people alive. (self.starbucksbaristas)

You guys CHOOSE to deal with verbal abuse?? My SSV (who likes to work register) comes to me *every day* with horror stories of what people say to her. I would quit if I were put on register often. How do you guys do it.

Register is fine. It's drive thru window that sucks.
baristapip 29 points 9m ago
Lol ironically I prefer dto and window to register in cafe
Ceramicusedbook 18 points 9m ago
I don't like the pressure. Drive scores stress me out.
baristapip 22 points 9m ago
I usually forget about the score, and there’s nothing I can do about waiting for drinks/food so I chat with customers at the window.
Craftyallthetime 8 points 9m ago
My store doesn’t have a DT. I’m so happy about that having heard the stories.

Same same same

I like dtow more because I think if you just entertain them enough they won't think of how they've been here for the unnecessary time they're spending in line. Sometimes I'm a little too informal so it catches them off guard !! Or I make dumb challenges like seeing how many people I can say "spumpkin pice" to when they order before someone wants to say something about it. Or come up with stupid things to greet them like stealing the cane's drive thru lines
ironic_nic 2 points 9m ago
I HATE dto/window but can tolerate cafe register.
baristapip 81 points 9m ago
Idk man I just enjoy it 🤷🏼‍♀️, but we don’t have as many angry customers at my store
Unionizestarbucks_ 18 points 9m ago
When I started I thought it'd be all the time, but in 12 months I can remember maybe 4 times someone was rude?
Tired_and_over_it 47 points 9m ago
At the end of the day I don’t care what a customer says to me, I find tantrums funny and don’t take anything to heart. These people are just wasting their time. Is it annoying when I’m busy yes, can they suck it.. also yes
GoldennTrash 4 points 9m ago
sad to say but this is literally the only mindset u should have when it comes to dealing with customers cause otherwise you’ll let yourself be driven crazy
Tired_and_over_it 2 points 8m ago
It’s something I had to learn after many years of taking it to heart. I used to not be able to separate myself from my job.
moon_light523 2 points 8m ago
yeah honestly I would be so embarrassed if I acted like how some crusties act so ik other people are probably also thinking they’re acting like a toddler and making a fool of themselves.
Xx_alittlelamb_xX 25 points 9m ago
Sometimes it’s nice to smile in the face of extreme rudeness or even just go complete deadpan. It really gets under their skin more than any typical reaction. Customer: this is wrong remake it now or I’ll ruin your stores reputation because you’re all pathetic.
Me completely deadpan while peak chaos unfolds: sure thing I’ll get that readded to the queue, it might take a while as we’ve received other orders in the meantime I’d be happy to offer a recovery card for the trouble.
If they escalate further than that I typically let them know I’ll let a supervisor connect with them in case 4$ off their next visit simply isn’t enough to make up for forgotten Carmel drizzle in your beverage today.

I think it’s funny when they’re mean

baby needs their baba

I love it. At this point, I crave anything different. Getting to call the sheriff on a shitty regular last night made my day.

i love register because i get to laugh about these peoples tantrums later <3 i also do love a little excuse to be mean right back just at a professional level
Lamlot 6 points 9m ago
I’m 32 and work nights as a bartender, our guests are not as bad as drunk people.
Craftyallthetime 6 points 9m ago
I was a help desk jockey before this job.

Plus I was an English/Theater double major.

All of that experience helps.

Also, I’m lucky that my store has a lot of nice people to balance out anyone who’s taking their bad day out on us.
foomeitshitme 5 points 9m ago
SM and I love working register. I’m 54 and missed my calling doing standup. My customers are entertained almost as much as I am. I play up my baristas and we all have fun. Have fun with it.
floofxs2 3 points 9m ago
The worst part of POS to me most of the time was that we’d constantly be short staffed and at a high volume DT during peak im trying to do warming and POS which is nearly impossible - then you got pissed off people at the register and DTO in your ear asking where 15 double toasted egg bites are.
But in general no I didn’t like POS but there were days I liked window.
girlwhoplayswithbugs 2 points 8m ago
I guess those crap customers have just always felt insignificant to me. I liked doing register because I knew others didn’t, so I was helping out. My go to is just to stare when they say something shitty. No expression. They get the idea.
Necessary_Low939 2 points 9m ago
I like register and if I get any sort of verbal abuse I make sure I put them in their place so they walk away defeated. I work in nyc and everyone’s just a little rude.
Cthulhu_Fleshsuit 2 points 9m ago
Personally I love working register and dto/window. I think of it as "sure I have to actually deal with the customers more, but I dont have to make these complicated ass drinks so who's really winning here?" That being said, I love bar just as much, but sometimes I'd just rather not, ya know?
saddestgirl1995 2 points 9m ago
I LOVE register all I do is talk to people push button pour coffee and get paid. Easy money
bunnysbigcookie 2 points 9m ago
and when you don’t have customers you just stand there…. doing nothing. i couldn’t i need to move around lol
SportsChick79 2 points 9m ago
I'm older and my hearing isn't what it was 20 years ago. I find it SO hard to hear customers on POS for whatever reason. Give me DTO where I can turn the volume way up.
purseEffphony 2 points 9m ago
Honestly it isnt that bad - most peoplenare pretty friendly.
Fuckingepicname 2 points 9m ago
Reading all these horror stories on reddit makes me think that 70% of costumers in the US are just pricks. I’ve been working with Sbux for 5 years fulltime in Denmark, and I can count on one hand how many times I’ve been verbally abused.
Party-Cat-3605 2 points 9m ago
It really depends on the area you're in and what the customers have been made to expect/allowed to do, in general it also depends on how the employees respond and how that company is known for handling issues.

There's also a lot of cultural diversity in our country, as it's pretty large and people come from all over.

The vast majority of customers are kind and respectful, however when you have thousands of people with years of experience each, they're going to talk about their negative experiences more than their positive ones

At my original store I was planted at reg like 95% of the time during convention days (it’s in the financial district and cons were the busiest days) but on regular days I could bounce around. At this store after I was rehired I’m all over the place but I love being on reg/dto
Rubinaito 2 points 9m ago
Man I loved working register when I was working at SB. I enjoyed making the drinks too but Register was easier on me - bar was exhausting 😂
Voxxyvoo 1 points 8m ago
I enjoy it because im so rarely on it. in the only reliable afternoon/evening bar so i almost never get register
RepresentativeArm464 1 points 8m ago
I’d rather do regular register than smthn like dto I hate that shit😭
emmacrafty33 1 points 9m ago
I like taking orders outside at drive thru I deal with some rude ppl and some dumb ppl but for the most part it’s funny and then I just talk to everyone on the headset and I like front register I just feel bad ringing up drinks when I know the mobile and cafe person is swamped and ppl try to complain to me
rusted17 1 points 9m ago
Our weakest bar partners love register and whenever I see their name on the play I’m like 🥹 cause I know they’ll beg me to bar for them and I’d rather eat my own hands than reg
PoppyPancakes 1 points 9m ago
I prefer register bc we don’t have a lot of cafe traffic so it’s easy for me to slip away and do other things in between customers. As an SSV I have already dealt with the worst of the worst, so any annoyed customer without good reason gets a blank stare and monotone explanation of how things operate.
