Honest question… do you like when customers that you don’t know use your name or do you find it creepy? (self.starbucksbaristas)

We have a regular who makes a big effort to remember our names. She knows our voices and says hi to us individually even when at the speaker box! It’s definitely sweet
m-orah 79 points 9m ago
for me, there’s a distinct difference between a regular who remembers my name vs some rando that just reads my nametag, usually older men. feels weird idk.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 16 points 8m ago
This!

I think it’s amplified for me cuz before I came out (I’m a trans man) the creepy old dudes would also hit on me in a super creepy way too.
thechamelioncircuit 90 points 9m ago
I always find it a little strange, but I prefer it to “hey, you.” Or “that blonde barista.”

Also I love when regulars call me by my name like yes! You know me!!
dankmobile 85 points 9m ago
people who ask for your name because they want to make an effort as a regular, yes!

people i’ve never seen that just read it off my tag and continue using it four more times… no
Psychological-Tax543 12 points 8m ago
I only like it if they’re regulars that are kind
pinkjortz 81 points 9m ago
I used to find it weird but now I’m like “thanks for acknowledging me as a human”
Inevitable_Emu_221 2 points 8m ago
Told someone thanks for noticing the other day bc they were so nice
PartlyCloudyKid 38 points 9m ago
Situational. If they seem like a jerk, I hate it. If they seem like just a regular person, I don't mind since I'm also saying their name. They'll be like "Thanks, John!" And I'll return with "Not a problem, Chris!" and we're all good 👍
brokenleftjoycon 27 points 9m ago
Some people use it as a power trip. I stopped putting my real name on my name tag.
beauloki 16 points 9m ago
If it’s a regular I really enjoy, then yes I love when they learn my name. If it’s a regular I have a distaste for, hellllll no
Decent-Marionberry63 15 points 9m ago
I could literally say “hi my name is ____. What can I get started for you?” And they respond with “hi ____, can I get—-“ and I will get the ick. Like excuse me we are not friendly like that 😂 that’s the social anxiety speaking lmao
Impressive-Coast-158 12 points 9m ago
Creepy. As. Hell.
nicolelynnejones 11 points 9m ago
Not really. Except this one time. They weren’t regulars. They were visiting from another country. Never seen them before in my life. I wasn’t wearing a name tag (mine got lost several months back and no one ordered new ones) and I was alone on the floor. They kept referring to me by name, asking me how xyz in my life was going… Really really weird.
testingaurora 6 points 8m ago
How did they know your name without a name tag?
nicolelynnejones 7 points 8m ago
That’s the whole thing
testingaurora 1 points 8m ago
Creeeeeepppyyyy. What kind of accents did they have?
nicolelynnejones 3 points 8m ago
They said they were visiting from Jamaica if I’m not mistaken. Had relatives that moved to Boston (I think)
[deleted] 9 points 9m ago
I hate it a lot
Jewicer 7 points 9m ago
it’s creepy for me bc in my case 100% of the time it’s [older] men and their stare lingers. and it’s always after i already hand them their stuff 😭
Ok_Beautiful_4056 7 points 9m ago
It doesn’t happen often for me so I’m mildly taken aback and uncomfortable about it however customers usually only say my name to thank me before they move on so it’s fine
Ceramicusedbook 7 points 9m ago
The most I've had people use it is to comment that we share the same name or they know someone who does because it isn't a common name.

I know some of our customers get surprised when we remember them lol
neilgreenbreen 7 points 9m ago
No tbh
peepeepoopaccount 6 points 9m ago
Most the time I hate it unless they’re a regular I’m cool with.
So awkward when they’re like “ok Hannah I want a {their order}” like you don’t know me like that 😵‍💫
honeycuup 6 points 9m ago
HATE it. I get Im wearing a name tag…but don’t
MysticsWonTheFinals 6 points 9m ago
>Them: Hey, can you do me a favor? What’s your name? *Reads it before I answer* [Name] can you do me a favor?

>Me, internally: Oh god, this internet-manipulation routine can’t be good

>Them: Can I get more caramel drizzle?
perfectsizzle 5 points 9m ago
I appreciate when people do in an effort to recognize me as a human being.
Better_Dust_2364 5 points 9m ago
Like it when they’re regulars (given they’re not weird af but luckily my store dosent have any of those) but unknown people? Fuck you.
badatlife15 3 points 8m ago
For the most part I don’t care, though it usually catches me off guard, but it does bug me when they shorten my name without knowing me or hearing someone else use the short version of my name. I’m fine with coworkers using a short version and therefore fine with regulars who have likely heard them call be the short version, but random people taking what’s on my name tag and shortening it bugs me.
purpleelephant77 3 points 8m ago
For me it really depends, if they’re a regular making an effort to get to know me then I find it sweet but I don’t like it when people read my name off my name tag and call me by it when I don’t know their name.
Vegan_Sweetie 3 points 9m ago
I actually like it when Customers make an effort to learn my name. Since learning names is part of my job, it feels nice that it also matters to some of our customers.

Name-tag readers are kind of weird though. 😅
franglaisedbeignet 3 points 9m ago
Someone addressing you by your name at work should not be creepy as it’s perfectly normal for humans to do this. I was on medical leave for awhile and when I came back to work, I remembered so many people’s names and drink orders, that the customers were pleased and smiled and thanked me for acknowledging them. And guys I didn’t recognize remembered me, months later, and my name. It wasn’t creepy. It’s only if they STARE at you or act weird, and people can give off a freak vibe with or without your name!!
ElevatorsAreScary 2 points 8m ago
No. I don’t like wearing a name tag at all honestly. We aren’t friends, I don’t know you, we aren’t on first name territory here
broookeee_ 2 points 8m ago
I find it creepy unless they’re a regular. I think creepy is the wrong word though, just more so like unexpected/off putting. But, super casually? HELL NOOO. One time this guy said “hey brooke, could you grab me a straw” ??? like dude I just met you what😭 Not even the regulars call me by name that often💀
Tgamb9 2 points 8m ago
I don’t mind. I only find it creepy when they flirt with me 😅
Alefur 2 points 8m ago
I don't like it when anyone who I don't know, at least, their name uses my name. Makes me exceptionally uncomfortable as I'm generally a very anxious person regardless. It kinda feels threatening in an unreasonable way.
GhostfaceJK 2 points 8m ago
i always forget i’m wearing a name tag and get slightly freaked out when they say my name lmao
mypoopoosmelly69 2 points 8m ago
depends how they say it, all of my interactions so far have been innocent and i know they have good intent so i dont mind!
rtsneedshelp 2 points 8m ago
If they’re a genuinely nice regular it’s fine and sometimes sweet (especially if they’re cute.. makes me blush hah). If it’s a weird old guy being an ass, no.
catsandmermaids29 2 points 8m ago
It depends on who it is to me. For some people it’s like “oh yay!” and some of them I get weirded out(that’s also the same when I brush hands with people…if they’re cute I don’t care but if they’re creepy I get the ick)
wok3less 2 points 8m ago
i LOVE it personally. makes me feel like a human being. i try and use their name, and when they use mine i feel so seen. like if i do my drive through intro and theyre like “hey wokeless! how are you?” and THEN order…they are getting a drink made with extraextra love
jazzysoranio 2 points 8m ago
It’s always weird when someone you’ve never met addresses you by name unless you’re like a guest speaker at an event or performing music at a concert or just generally the main focus of a planned event. Companies don’t make us wear name tags because it’s normal, they make us wear them because it reinforces in everyone’s minds that our customer/barista relationship is inherently unbalanced. I guess you could argue that that IS the expectation for the job and therefore it is normal. But I still feel like it’s weird. I would never just walk up to a stranger and start addressing them by name as if we’ve met. A normal person would first say their name, and THEN either say “and you’re ____, right?” or just ask their name.

Although, I do get that often the alternative is for customers to address you by appearance. Ugh. It’s just part of being in customer service I guess.
impasse602 2 points 8m ago
If its a regular that’s ok i like that they know my name since i know theirs but random ppl calling my name is creepy af
plzdontbeabeach 1 points 8m ago
strangers randomly using my government name doesn’t make me feel like a human being, it just startles and confuses me 😭 being patient and nice will make me feel a lot better than some dude jumpscaring me with my own name lmaoo
Faendina 1 points 8m ago
I don’t mind regulars doing that but if you aren’t a regular I hate it. I think it’s just a me thing though
liveinashoeb0x 1 points 8m ago
I have a bigger chest and I’ve noticed that it’s mostly older white men that say my name. So I just automatically think they’re staring at my girls so it grosses me out.
IdoItForTheMemez 1 points 8m ago
It's not creepy in and of itself, BUT, there's a particular category of assholes who use this as a strategy for being creepy or manipulative. Like, if someone is gonna perv on a barista, they ALWAYS read the name tag first. So I associate it with creepers, but don't find it inherently creepy, if that makes sense?
Voxxyvoo 1 points 8m ago
its not my given name so i pay it no mind really
_notaprilbutmayy 1 points 8m ago
i don’t mind!! ofc it’s situational but if they’re just saying “thanks *name*” as they’re pulling away in dt i appreciate it. makes me feel like a person and not a coffee slinging robot.
lilkiosk 1 points 8m ago
I personally hate it mostly because it’s usually middle aged men and I’m a mid-20s woman, so like to me it’s creepy. But if it’s a customer I had a positive interaction with I don’t usually mind. It does throw me off because I forget about my name tag most of the time so it’s always like “how did you know???” Until I remember.

francescugh 1 points 8m ago
remember, you see 100s of customers everyday, but you’re the only barista they see in the window (: you have that impact!
elz-belles 1 points 8m ago
I hate it, and hate name tag culture in general. I feel like cattle, lol. If you’re a frequent, daily customer then…. I still don’t want you to use my name! You can call me friend, or just “you”. Why? Because I don’t know YOUR name by heart, or I only use it because I’m driving sales. It’s disingenuous to call each other by name and act like it’s friendly and normal when I’m literally in a servant position to the customer.
RoccoSteal 1 points 8m ago
I don’t mind. It is my name after all. BUT idk why I’m always surprised when they read it from my tag like how the fuck do you know who i am, OH my name tag right.
Purgatory-Maybe 1 points 8m ago
Nope. Very creepy unless I know them well
Bright_Step1260 1 points 8m ago
i don’t like it because i always forget that i wear a name tag and my first instinct is always “how tf do they know my name?!?”
Oramirezv91 1 points 8m ago
It was part of the reason why I didn’t always wear my name tag. The other reason was because it was in my pocket because I was using it as a box cutter 😅
Nogood1111 1 points 8m ago
I don't like being perceived at all tbh. I hate it when any customer calls me anything it's just weird
lovegalore66 1 points 8m ago
i got called coffee girl once by an angry costumer as an insult so yes i like being called by my name 😭
Latter-Guava-4734 1 points 8m ago
I honestly don’t know. I’m usually on front register at my store a lot lately so a lot of people have been reading my name tag and using my name, so maybe I just got used to it. Some people have even complimented my name, which is a bit odd and I don’t really know what to say besides, “Thanks, my parents gave it to me.” I find it sweet though nonetheless. It used to bug the heck out of me at my old job and beginning of Starbucks though.
Accomplished_Past_10 1 points 8m ago
When theyre regulars that are nice and take the time to learn our names, of course! Not when its an old person for the first & last time doing it. It kinda irritates me
TheYesExpress 1 points 8m ago
I use their name when giving their total and wishing them a good day. I honestly don’t find it creepy at all. It’s meant to be personable, not creepy. That being said I think it entirely depends on the customer. But in general? No, not at all.
ElijahLordoftheWoods 1 points 8m ago
It really depends on the context for me.

I’m a trans man, passing doesn’t matter, but I do pass. I’d like to think I’d read as an effeminate cis gay man. Sometimes customers I don’t know will read my name off my name tag in a tone like they don’t believe it’s really my name. I go by a shorted version (Think Nate rather than Nathanial) of my name, but I have a few name tags with my full first name. I don’t get it often but I think there’s an uptick when I have those on. That’s not cool.

Chill customers tho, y’all are fine. If we like had a good chat while waiting for your egg bites and you aren’t giving off creeper vibes sure. Sometimes these customers become regulars.
underdoglush 1 points 8m ago
We ask for their names.. we might be the weirdos 😂
sushibroni 1 points 8m ago
someone did this today and it scared me because they just kind of appeared and was yelling my name from behind the barrier we have 😭 generally though i kind of hate it, they usually over emphasize it because i’m trans and i’m very easily clockable so its kind of weird
scmfckwaido 1 points 8m ago
Depends on the situation
sten45 1 points 8m ago
Creepy
Odd_Entertainment134 1 points 8m ago
I do find it a little off-putting. Mostly because A) I’ve only ever heard it said by older men (I’m 22F) which isn’t a super fun pattern, specifically men who say it like they’re expecting a medal for thinking to call me by name, and B) first guy that made a point of doing it asked me out through the drive thru window the next week.
DeeEnn72 1 points 8m ago
Creepy.
JFay 1 points 8m ago
I’ve been wearing name tags at work my whole working life, so it’s almost normal for me. It’s only creepy when they use that tone that’s like, “I’m so clever for using your name after you just asked for mine”
PlacidoFlamingo7 1 points 8m ago
As a customer, I would never ever do this, but I’d wonder if that’s me making up rules where none exist
lilmissambersue 1 points 8m ago
I like it! I thinks it's nice. I find it the funniest when I'm like "what's your name for your order?" And they respond but then go "and what's your name??"
I also love our customers though and none of them creep me out
